Hello everyone!
If you can't play as high as you'd like, it's either due to a lack of strength or a lack of skill. You can build up the necessary strength very quickly with appropriate exercises. You can also train your dexterity in a targeted manner, but you can't do that overnight.
If you don't place it, 90% of the time the problem is with clumsy use of the tongue. As you saw in the video above, this is the "valve" to increase the air pressure. However, this often does not work as it should. Why is that?
In everyday life, i.e. when speaking or eating, the tongue is associated with movements of the lower jaw, the throat and also the lips. When playing the trumpet, however, it should function as independently as possible. I will also explain to you why. Let's take the two vowels a and i as an example. Aa stands for a low tone because the tongue is far down in the mouth. Ii stands for a high note, because here the train is high up in the mouth. You can try this out by quickly saying aiaiaiai.
But what happens when you speak? When you say "aaaaa" the jaw is usually wide open, it's a deep tone, the lips are round and relaxed. What if you say "Iiiiiii"? You notice the jaw is closed, the tone is higher and you pull your lips apart.
You may have heard of the fact that many teachers are careful not to pull your lips apart when playing up? But that only happens in the first place because you are doing the right thing intuitively, namely by bringing your tongue up in order to generate higher air pressure. Then, unfortunately, the jaw closes at the same time, so that the narrowest point cannot be far forward enough, the neck becomes narrower and blocks the free flow of air and the lips also pull apart so that less force is available here.
Lo and behold: nothing will happen with the high notes or it's incredibly exhausting ...
How you can still do it ...
It is therefore a smart idea to train the movement of the tongue so that it works completely independently of the jaw, lips and vocal folds. This is the first step in a complete system of exercises that I will be happy to teach you.
I hope I was able to help you with my thoughts as well as exercises, tips and tricks on this important trumpet topic / video. To a good cooperation and always remember: Stay tuned is the motto!
See you soon and Ciao !!! Your Nico
