Which would you use and why?

I’ve never used ceramic palette (so I literally don’t know what I’m missing haha), but for painting out and about I’d definitely prefer just having one item to manage rather than the multiple pieces. My palette is one I “made” myself. I’ve got 15 half pans attached with magnets inside a small tin which originally had mints in it. The lid is hinged and I use that for mixing. I love it and use it at home too.

That does sound easier than having to juggle multiple pieces I agree, and lighter!

I've got both the ceramic versions, and the Winsor Newton Cotman, but I swapped out the smaller Winsor Newton for a bigger (older) Winsor Newton palette, it holds whole pans and half pans. Only disavantage with them (I use two so I have nearly all the W&N cotman pans), the half pans fall out easily. Mine just tumbled open yesterday and is currently sitting like a puzzle needing to be put back together..lol. I prefer the Etchr palette. I made more felt pads and cushion it more in a little fabric zip pouch when I travel with it.

Ah yes, I forgot about the pans falling out occasionally too, that's certainly happened to me before! Good luck putting them all back together again. I suppose you could use some double-sided tape, or I've heard of people gluing magnets if it's a metal tin but then it becomes annoying when swapping colours out. Nice that you made more felt pads and a zip pouch, great idea!

Gotta say as much as I love a ceramic mixing palette, I’m only ever going to use one at home… so I’m going to get a bigger, beautiful, hand crafted one! One I love seeing out on my desk/work area. 🥰 For my out and about kit I’m completely dedicated to Art Toolkit’s Pocket Palettes! Different sizes, completely interchangeable, various pan sizes, very lightweight, etc… so many pros! The only con I can think of, although it’s never a problem for how I work, is the limited mixing area… but even that can be overcome with the new larger mixing pans. Also, based on my past experiences with art supplies in the field, I’d immediately loss/leave/have blow away pieces or parts of the Etchr palette… lol! Thank you for the review… it was very informative.

Thanks Tiffany! Yes, I was recently gifted a bigger ceramic palette for use at home that I've got to try soon (and its beautiful too, look out for it in future videos). I'm hopefully going to be able to test the Art Toolkit pocket palette soon, I've found they've been prohibitively expensive to ship over but they do seem to be perfect for having lots of colours and look so lightweight! To keep things from being lost when I unpack the Etchr palette I usually put the felt back in the tin and the colour swatch paper in the lid, or back in my bag if its really windy. I've also recently taken to sticking the ceramic plates themselves to my sketchbook with a kneadable eraser, it works!

Because while out painting i never have found a good mixing palette i like the 18--- 1/2 pan tin palette from schminke. With a clip i can attach it to my board. I also have ripped apart a cheap watercolor palette ( bought from wish) that i popped out the thin slightly larger than full pans and i tacked these to a plastic that fits into the schminke palette when i take out the metal tray that holds the 1/2 pans. I stack 2 in the tin and wind up with 24 colors plus i have space for a couple 1/4 pans for colors i seldom use to mix for different shades of a color. I hope this made sense...ps i like using a 10- 12 paint brush..

Thanks for sharing. Sounds like you've got a good system that works for you with the right number of colours. I've never heard of 1/4 pans before! I do prefer metal mixing area to plastic, ceramic is best but heavy.

@KimsNJAdventures ps. The only place I know to order the schmincke 18 half pan palette empty is WET PAINT an art store that is on line from the Midwest. And it balances perfectly for me in my hand when I have to stand.

For my travel palette I made up my own from a blister of tabletts, which I filled with the colours of tubes of my choice and the number of colors I like. I glued the blister into some sort of flat plastic container which oniginally might have been for business cards. And I glued a kind of pop socket ring on the backside. For bigger paintings at home I like porcelain dishes, which have compartments (i.e. Fondue, Snacks, dishes from hospital). I get them very cheap from a second hand store or flea market.

I've seen the blister packet versions, very cheap but effective and light too I imagine! I like the pop socket idea, I should get a couple. Yes, I have a couple of ceramics with compartments for painting at home but I rarely use them, depending on the paints I'm using (and if they have their own mixing area). Thanks for sharing your travel palette. :D

I think the etchr set is gorgeous but I think I'd somehow drop it and break them as I'm a clutz! 😅... the cotman pocket box is so well designed and for plein air work 12 colours is more than enough. I've had lessons with a professional artist who only uses 8 well chosen pigments. But I also love the little bijou box from Cornellissen I can fit 14 half pans in if I turn top and bottom upwards and remove the bars. I use magnetic tape to hold them secure. Then, any small plastic mixing palette or small holbein style palette for additional mixing space is all you need. But I enjoyed your review. The etchr is one of those gifts things you want but don't need ❤

Thank you, yes the Etchr palette is probably not the best if you tend to drop or knock things. 😅 Where do you get the magnetic tape from?

Got to be the Winsor & Newton (prefer the uniform size for the pans), I paint almost exclusively with their brushes and they are of exceptional quality.

I certainly agree with the larger pan size, I'd actually like to try full size one day (you can see holes in my half pans), with just a few mixing colours. I've also never tried the Winsor & Newton brushes before but heard good things about them!

I have the WN cotmon like yours. The Older one. I have been told they have cheapened the paints in the newer ones. Which is a terrible disappointment if that is indeed true. That set has just always been an affordable option. Thank you soooooo much for sharing.

Yes, I feel they are fine for sketching but for more professional work they probably won't be good enough. I was gifted this set many years ago and it's done the job well but I prefer others. I will probably replace the paints in future but the travel kit is a good size. Thanks for watching and commenting! :)
