Can confirm as a miniature watercolorist who works with size 4 round or smaller and has ended up with many tubes of paint, that the etchr/stephanie law palette is bomb.

I like the concept but I would prefer a bigger palette that I can maybe put 20 colors in and use up to size 12 brushes with. This one is cute but not super suitable for the type of painting I do which uses a limited palette but requires a lot of mixing. I love porcelain palettes they are easy to clean and the watercolor doesn’t beed up. The commercial porcelain palettes that offer up to 20 color wells are enormous even for a studio environment. Maybe Etcher can consider a design that’s in between this product and the much larger commercially available ones. Thanks for sharing!

I'm glad you reviewed this tiny little workhorse palette. True, it's not for everyone but I got in on the kickstarter and have been using it for several months now for urban sketching and art journaling. I will say that for me it's most convenient to use with a water brush. It is heavy for its size but not as fragile as it seems. To keep it from clanking inside the tin I've layered a piece of the included felt, the mixing tray, another piece of felt, and finally the palette tray. When I'm finished painting, instead of putting a piece of felt on top of still-wet paints, I like this solution: I filled in her printed template when I put my colors in the palette, laminated it on both sides with a couple pieces of clear tape and trimmed around the circle, then attached a little tab of washi tape which sticks up enough for me to easily pull the paper out. This is what I put in on top of the paints before I close the lid. It keeps the palette from knocking against the lid and keeps the paints under control, and has made it one useful little palette indeed. Sometimes I really like having all my options with me!

I loved the idea of this palette back when I first saw it.... but couldn't justify the purchase of it. 1) Too heavy for a travel palette in my opinion (for backpack/non-car travel) 2) Me being a klutz, I would HATE to risk breaking it out of the house (the replacement cost would make me cry alone) 3) Maybe too small (but adorable!) for a desk palette... but haven't counted it out yet 4) Just too expensive considering it's limitations/cons despite how much i love small/mini things (at this stage at least) I settled on the Artist Toolkit/Expeditionary Art Pocket Palette instead for travel. It is also doubling as my home palette with a ceramic plate..... Now to find a well/mixing option for larger amounts of liquid that I am happy with for water colour and acrylic (for tabletop minis).

Thanks for the review. I remember Stephanie’s kickstarter for this palette, it’s a lovely little palette and mixer, a really great design, however, I wish she had made the paint wells twice the size - giving room for 18 colours (that would equate to almost half pan size) instead of the 36 tiny wells. An 18 well version would have been perfect palette imho and I would then buy it as it would also mean a no 6 or even 8 brush could be used. 12 colours are more than enough for me as I like a limited palette so normally work with no more than 6 colours anyway, so 18 would be a bonus, and while I could fill 2 wells with the same colour going round on this 36 well version, I would still have the bump in the middle to deal with which may damage the brush. It is a nice palette though, and I would be the first to buy an 18 well version!

I got one of these when they launched and while I love the 37-well palette for travelling, I do not get on with the mixing palette and found myself frequently reaching for one with more room. In addition they are both together very very heavy....more than my extremely chunky Samsung Note 8! I love the concept of this palette set but honestly I really wish it was made of plastic or something more lightweight and less breakable than porcelain and that there was more mixing room. Also the felt separators are made out of a fabric that sheds a LOT of lint! So I got rid of those very quickly. The concept of this palette is great but it's not so practical in execution. I found myself going back to my 8-pan metal tin very quickly.

Interesting review! Cute palette. Probably good for flower painters, but for landscape and sketching, too many colours may result in confusion. Porcelain should/can not stain, so I agree it is the best surface for mixing. One could easily pack a small plate instead, along with a limited palette. Would not be the end of the world if it broke. I do not think I would dare to bring such an expensive palette as this round one outside, though. I really apprecite reviews such as these, though. It is reallty interesting to see the inventiveness painting brings out in people.

I love the idea of this palette! I paint a lot of small details, so I use hardly any paint at all. I find that half pans last me many years. This isn't the worst, but over many years it's easy to end up with contamination, dust, hair, and potentially mold, or some form of deterioration. Recently I decided to try finding products that hold small quantities of many colors, and it's not easy. It's nice to see something like this. I will definitely be adding it to my wishlist!

When I've seen those mini palettes, I noticed that people tend to paint small pieces, 4x6 or less. I imagine they also would work well with artist trading card painting. As far as brushes, I'm thinking #2 or less; perhaps a #4, depending on the manufacturer's sizing which can vary widely. I wish manufacturers would come up with one agreed upon brush size standard. It would make brush shopping (especially online) SO much easier.

I think I might enjoy this mini palette. I wouldn't fill up with colors side by side to avoid contamination, but I could still carry enough variety and quantity of paint to do decent work out and about. My current favorite thing to do now that its getting cold out is to paint at coffee shops and this is perfect for that.

The tin should have been designed better. For fragile palettes that are so expensive, I don't want to have to tip the whole thing over to dump them out. Also, if you still have unused paint in the wells and put it back in the tin for transport... how are you supposed to get the palette back out again without making a mess?

Thanks for your comment! We understand where you’re coming from and to be clear - the palette is made of porcelain and it’s a very high quality product. The porcelain makes the brush glaze right over it. We could make something with cheap plastic and other materials but that’s not what we are striving for. We hand picked and tested everything to ensure this palette is the best possible product we can make. Thanks for understanding and once again thanks for the interest! :)

I like porcelain because it doesn't stain the way plastic does. If I had that palette, I am pretty sure that I would not fill all of those tiny paint wells. I'd be concerned with cross contamination. I don't know if I would use any brush bigger than a 4 and more likely, a 2. My finished painting would probably be business card size; so, very small. I do like the idea of portable porcelain. My porcelain palette is bigger and a bit heavy to haul around should I wish to go to the park to paint.
