6:50 Alabama's southeast was missed. There is no expressway link from I-10 around Cottondale, via Dothan AL, to I-65 in Montgomery; drivers must use US 231 and put up with all the intersections store traffic etc. This is becoming an issue as the Florida peninsula has grown well past 20 million. If you look at routes out of Florida, like a hurricane evacuation, there are only TWO interstates out of Florida. Both can jam. There are plans afoot in Fla to extend the FL Turnpike, and separately there is this Suncoast Parkway being extended up the west side north from Tampa. Either or both may get extended up north to I-10 west of Lake City and west of 75. US 19 is currently in that space, via Perry. An express exit in that area will need to connect to 10, but that road is only 2x2 and woefully inadequate to handle an evacuation if fed by new roads. So someone at FL, AL DOT is going to look at a connection to Dothan for traffic going north and west. Such a NW route would let traffic get to Birmingham and the new I-22 for the trip to Memphis, affording connections to many points in the central US. (The missing link where 22 currently ends just short of Memphis, and the lack of east-west bypass route into AR over a river crossing over the Mississippi south of the two already crowded, old bridges in Memphis, is worth a video in its own right).

Every major city is connected by a 4 lane corridor, with the exception of La Crosse and Northeast cities. Iowa is similar, and connects all its major cities with 4 lane corridors. There is a lot of road traffic that comes off southbound Interstate 65 in Montgomery that is heading toward Panama City Beach. Either US Highway 231 or US Highway 331 needs to be upgraded to interstate standards with controlled access, at least down to Interstate 10 in Florida. Another corridor in Alabama I believe needs to be explored is from Dothan to Phenix City, Alabama/Columbus, Georgia. I will say that the 4-lane US Highway 431 is WAAAAAY better than the old 2-lane 431 was, but its also a heavy traffic route. At least now we don't have to count the 90+ white crosses on the side of 431 anymore.

Few thoughts based on my experience roadtripping: 1) Colorado roads are a lot better than they're given credit for, especially in the Denver metro. Traffic in Denver, while not perfect, is still pretty decent compared to other major cities. 2) Indiana's roads are, frankly, terrible, especially up by Chicago and in Indy. I have no idea how they ranked highly on the road quality list. 3) Iowa has a higher population than Kansas, so I would argue they shouldn't fall into the Too Easy category. They have good connectivity between their main cities (Des Moines and Davenport on I-80 with a short spur route to Cedar Rapids, plus easy connections to Chicago, Minneapolis, KC, and Omaha), and their roads are in pretty good condition. Also their traffic isn't all that bad either.

the fact you even mentioned massachusetts suprises me and makes me quite happy. I thought it'd surely not even be in your consideration since the traffic is so bad and the roads aren't the best here, but I like that you pointed out the overall good road layout of the state. However one thing i will point out as someone that lives in the state is that in the south shore region (quincy, braintree, weymouth, plymouth that area) there is very little freeway development, despite the fact that it is a very populated area as it is suburbs of boston. There is really only one freeway that goes through the whole area which is ma route 3, and it is mostly a 2 lane on each side highway for the duration of its length. This lack of roads for such a populated area, combined with it being the shortest route from boston south to cape cod, makes this route one of if not the most congested and backed up roads i have ever been on. There is almost never a break in the traffic since the road is always being clogged by either people commuting in and out of boston, going to or from cape cod, or just traveling between south shore town to other south shore town because it is the only way to get around there other than backroads. At this point there is not much that can be done, ma is one of the densest states and there is no way there would ever be enough land to build another highway let alone the money to do it, but I think this is an important consideration to make when analyzing the highway system in this state.

I lived in Massachusetts (North Shore) in the 1980s-90s. Probably the best thing they could do is expand the public transportation system. The T is a great way for getting in and out of Boston, but the rail lines could go further. They could also look at better service for those commuting down 128 from one suburb to another (as I did from Peabody to Woburn for five years). But I agree that building more roads isn't the answer.

Idaho's lack of North-south connectivity makes northern and southern Idaho almost two different states. And, after driving from the east coast to Indiana for the eclipse last year, I was not impressed with Indiana's roads. But still. This was an entertaining little exercise. Good work. :-)

My home state of Georgia has greatly improved road repairs in recent years, especially on the US roadways, like US 41, 19, 78, 23 and 29. Also, going up Georgia 400 and connecting with US 19 has become easier, heading into North Georgia and out of the state. Sadly, the traffic at our perimeter highway I-285 getting onto I-85 north is still bad, considering the amount of semi trucks that come through the state, as well as traffic slowdowns going through downtown Atlanta on I-75/85 during rush hour or events. We have improved overall in road quality and ease though.

Great video. I like this topic. California, where I'm originally from, used to have amazing freeways and state routes too. Caltrans, the company tasked with maintaining a lot of these routes, had armies of workers and the pay was good too. They shrunk Caltrans, firing a lot of employees and reducing its budget. Over the years, these major connecting routes have gotten worse and worse, mostly with the exception of federal interstates.

Coeur d'Alene is basically a suburb of Spokane, and is connected well enough via 90. Hard to get to Wyoming's most popular tourist destination, Jackson, not well connected, but it shouldn't be because it is beautiful around there and Yellowstone. Going from Alabama to Florida on the interstate, you go from bumpy crappy roads to really smooth ones. It is like going from a third world into a first world country.

I-59 barely clips Georgia for only around 15-20 miles in Dade County. Most Georgians have never been on that stretch, and I'd argue that most probably don't even realize that it does pass through the extreme northwestern corner of the state, since it connects Birmingham to Chattanooga.

It's MUCH better than driving in Washington and Oregon, but there is a decent amount of traffic on I-84 during rush hour between downtown Boise and the satellite cities to the West. It's not too bad, but the natives complain a lot, since it only started with all the growth in the last 5-10 years. There are also some very crowded North-South roads to Eagle, but we're actually building a new freeway that should help! Although it's pretty far out to the West, so I'm not sure if it will have a very big impact.

I’ve lived in Kansas all my life. The highways as a whole are well maintained in this state. Even towns like Great Bend (and Barton County for that matter) do a decent job with the roads. A running gag here in the Kansas City area is how you can tell if you’re in Kansas or Missouri: just look at the roads. This is quite true when driving down State Line Road or on I-435 when crossing the state line. 435 is visually different east and west of the state line. For some reason, there’s more trash along the median from the state line to at least through Holmes Road. I-70 from Kansas City to at least through Columbia is all over the place in terms of maintenance and upkeep.

I live in South Dakota. I don't know if my state is listed as the worst, but it wouldn't surprise me. It's not the fault of the highway crews. They do the best they can, but they have to fight three major obstacles. First, government funding is quite low. Not a large tax base to draw from, and it seems that the state will forsake the roads to keep taxes low. Secondly, road construction and maintenance has a short window of time to get accomplished. May to October is about the only months when any meaningful work can be done. And that leads into the third reason: the climate. South Dakota gets VERY harsh winters that just beats the teetotal dogshit out of the roads every winter . That old joke about two seasons? Winter and Road Construction? Yeah, that's pretty much the case. I wouldn't mind paying a bit more in taxes to have better roads. Sure beats needing new tires and alignments on your vehicle every time you turn around.

I beg to differ with Alabama. They’re interstates might be good and some of their big roads like US 84, 80, and 280 but I’ve traveled many of they’re state roads in the last couple years and some of them would be better off being dirt. Been down quite a few that you’d swear the grader went down at about 30 mph washboarding it the best he could right before it got paved. And some even have grass growing in the cracks on state highways no less. The only place worse I’ve seen in my travels is probably Louisiana or west central Illinois.
