@benjaminchandler7919 not to mention a state like Montana, while low in population, is massive in area and has to tackle insane terrain and weather, plus it's one of the most visited states in terms of tourism, yet has no sales tax to capitalize on said tourists. And it still has really good roads. Local and state governments financial competence is the biggest factor imo.

the lack of interstate connectivity between PHX and LV is egregious and US-93, although a perfectly fine road, is just simply not capable of effectively handling the volume of throughput. I drive that route relatively often and during busy travel periods the 40 mile stretch NW of Wickenburg is hell. Once the I-11 project actually completes, hopefully sooner than later, I think it's going to be at least a strong contender for top spot.

When you say Arizona, are you thinking about only Phoenix or the entire state? Because there's a big difference. Phoenix arguably has the highest quality and most modern freeways of any major US city because voters approved a half-cent sales tax measure decades ago to fund road construction/maintenance in Maricopa County. Meanwhile in the rest of the state.. ADOT definitely does a fine job with the resources they have but they are hardly the best roads.

Charlotte is the only exception really. Going through downtown on roads like I277 and I77 show its age. But at the same time consider that Charlotte always gets screwed over by the state because the government likes to spend more money in Raleigh. Otherwise I would say the interstate system is really good. I like to call I85 the Charlotte superspeedway 😂 and I95 is appropriately sized for handling most traffic (which is mostly out of state). But I must give Virginia credit. Despite the extreme traffic volumes, Virginia always maintains a really great interstate system. The tax dollars from the north end up funding a lot of construction projects down south and out in the mountains.

Nope, no accident, just Oklahoma’s subpar road maintenance. *Props to Oklahoma though because the highways in the cities have seemed to come a very long way in the last 15 years. While they still have a lot to improve, they have done a decent job improving where they have, like the I-44 rebuild in Tulsa or the crosstown expressway on I-40 in OKC. Nebraska is really the only state that doesn’t have an extreme contrast when you cross the state line. On I70 west at CO state line it’s awful. As a resident of Kentucky, I might be biased...but we have a really good highway system. Our three major metros are all well connected with appropriate capacity (I-75, I-64, I-71). Kentucky also has an extensive and toll-free parkway system which mostly run east/west, making it possible to drive completely on limited access highways from far eastern Kentucky all the way to the western edge. Not to mention all the well-maintained four-lane highways in the eastern mountainous part of the state...which I'd argue are some of the best in Appalachia.

Honestly? Kentucky has a great road system. While the quality varies on state highways, the US highways and interstates are medium to great. The three largest cities are well connected with a loop of interstates and the larger small cities are also connected with those same interstates. When going east to west, the Cumberland Parkway (which is going to be turned into the I65 spur and connect it with I75) provides a great fast route. The constant construction on I75 is a problem, but Kentucky, I think, is a good contender, I'd place it around 2 or 3, personally.

6:50 Alabama's southeast was missed. There is no expressway link from I-10 around Cottondale, via Dothan AL, to I-65 in Montgomery; drivers must use US 231 and put up with all the intersections store traffic etc. This is becoming an issue as the Florida peninsula has grown well past 20 million. If you look at routes out of Florida, like a hurricane evacuation, there are only TWO interstates out of Florida. Both can jam. There are plans afoot in Fla to extend the FL Turnpike, and separately there is this Suncoast Parkway being extended up the west side north from Tampa. Either or both may get extended up north to I-10 west of Lake City and west of 75. US 19 is currently in that space, via Perry. An express exit in that area will need to connect to 10, but that road is only 2x2 and woefully inadequate to handle an evacuation if fed by new roads. So someone at FL, AL DOT is going to look at a connection to Dothan for traffic going north and west. Such a NW route would let traffic get to Birmingham and the new I-22 for the trip to Memphis, affording connections to many points in the central US. (The missing link where 22 currently ends just short of Memphis, and the lack of east-west bypass route into AR over a river crossing over the Mississippi south of the two already crowded, old bridges in Memphis, is worth a video in its own right).

It's hard to disagree with this list. I love it! I'm probably slightly biased, but I've lived in Iowa and Wisconsin and the 4 lane non interstate expressways that they have is great. Wisconsin has a lot of Freeway/expressway miles. You can even find two stack interchanges in Wausau, an urban area hardly surpassing 100k people. Every major city is connected by a 4 lane corridor, with the exception of La Crosse and Northeast cities. Iowa is similar, and connects all its major cities with 4 lane corridors. Iowa has less freeway/Expressway miles than Wisconsin but feels like the state has more coverage. The roads are straight here as some less challenging terrain. But Iowas county highway system is incredible.

@6:53 - I think one place Alabama has not addressed fully is the corridor from Montgomery to Dothan and on down to the Panama City area. There is a lot of road traffic that comes off southbound Interstate 65 in Montgomery that is heading toward Panama City Beach. Either US Highway 231 or US Highway 331 needs to be upgraded to interstate standards with controlled access, at least down to Interstate 10 in Florida. Another corridor in Alabama I believe needs to be explored is from Dothan to Phenix City, Alabama/Columbus, Georgia. I will say that the 4-lane US Highway 431 is WAAAAAY better than the old 2-lane 431 was, but its also a heavy traffic route. At least now we don't have to count the 90+ white crosses on the side of 431 anymore.

Few thoughts based on my experience roadtripping: 1) Colorado roads are a lot better than they're given credit for, especially in the Denver metro. Traffic in Denver, while not perfect, is still pretty decent compared to other major cities. 2) Indiana's roads are, frankly, terrible, especially up by Chicago and in Indy. I have no idea how they ranked highly on the road quality list. 3) Iowa has a higher population than Kansas, so I would argue they shouldn't fall into the Too Easy category. They have good connectivity between their main cities (Des Moines and Davenport on I-80 with a short spur route to Cedar Rapids, plus easy connections to Chicago, Minneapolis, KC, and Omaha), and their roads are in pretty good condition. Also their traffic isn't all that bad either.

Here in Ohio, we crap all over the quality of the roads in Indiana. No, we don't want to drive to Indianapolis to get where we want to go. Take a trip to Indiana Beach and see how dreadful the trip across US-24 is. US-30 is nice and well developed in Ohio, but takes an immediate dip in quality once you hit indiana. Also, the arbitrarily low speed limits across the state can be agonizing. I also find it funny how the two major Amusement parks in the state are right in the middle of a bunch of corn fields with crappy two lane roads getting you there.

the fact you even mentioned massachusetts suprises me and makes me quite happy. I thought it'd surely not even be in your consideration since the traffic is so bad and the roads aren't the best here, but I like that you pointed out the overall good road layout of the state. However one thing i will point out as someone that lives in the state is that in the south shore region (quincy, braintree, weymouth, plymouth that area) there is very little freeway development, despite the fact that it is a very populated area as it is suburbs of boston. There is really only one freeway that goes through the whole area which is ma route 3, and it is mostly a 2 lane on each side highway for the duration of its length. This lack of roads for such a populated area, combined with it being the shortest route from boston south to cape cod, makes this route one of if not the most congested and backed up roads i have ever been on. There is almost never a break in the traffic since the road is always being clogged by either people commuting in and out of boston, going to or from cape cod, or just traveling between south shore town to other south shore town because it is the only way to get around there other than backroads. At this point there is not much that can be done, ma is one of the densest states and there is no way there would ever be enough land to build another highway let alone the money to do it, but I think this is an important consideration to make when analyzing the highway system in this state.

I lived in Massachusetts (North Shore) in the 1980s-90s. Probably the best thing they could do is expand the public transportation system. The T is a great way for getting in and out of Boston, but the rail lines could go further. They could also look at better service for those commuting down 128 from one suburb to another (as I did from Peabody to Woburn for five years). But I agree that building more roads isn't the answer.

There was once a proposal for a second expressway on the South Shore, Route 53, that would’ve ran from the Braintree Split to the Scituate area through the denser areas of Weymouth, Hingham and Cohasset. Also a proposal to expand Route 3 to three lanes between Hingham and Plymouth

My home state of Georgia has greatly improved road repairs in recent years, especially on the US roadways, like US 41, 19, 78, 23 and 29. Also, going up Georgia 400 and connecting with US 19 has become easier, heading into North Georgia and out of the state. Sadly, the traffic at our perimeter highway I-285 getting onto I-85 north is still bad, considering the amount of semi trucks that come through the state, as well as traffic slowdowns going through downtown Atlanta on I-75/85 during rush hour or events. We have improved overall in road quality and ease though.

Caltrans, the company tasked with maintaining a lot of these routes, had armies of workers and the pay was good too. They shrunk Caltrans, firing a lot of employees and reducing its budget. Over the years, these major connecting routes have gotten worse and worse, mostly with the exception of federal interstates.

It's not too bad, but the natives complain a lot, since it only started with all the growth in the last 5-10 years. There are also some very crowded North-South roads to Eagle, but we're actually building a new freeway that should help! I’ve lived in Kansas all my life. The highways as a whole are well maintained in this state. Even towns like Great Bend (and Barton County for that matter) do a decent job with the roads. A running gag here in the Kansas City area is how you can tell if you’re in Kansas or Missouri: just look at the roads. This is quite true when driving down State Line Road or on I-435 when crossing the state line. 435 is visually different east and west of the state line. For some reason, there’s more trash along the median from the state line to at least through Holmes Road. I-70 from Kansas City to at least through Columbia is all over the place in terms of maintenance and upkeep.

I live in South Dakota. I don't know if my state is listed as the worst, but it wouldn't surprise me. It's not the fault of the highway crews. They do the best they can, but they have to fight three major obstacles. First, government funding is quite low. Not a large tax base to draw from, and it seems that the state will forsake the roads to keep taxes low. Secondly, road construction and maintenance has a short window of time to get accomplished. May to October is about the only months when any meaningful work can be done. And that leads into the third reason: the climate. South Dakota gets VERY harsh winters that just beats the teetotal dogshit out of the roads every winter . That old joke about two seasons? Winter and Road Construction? Yeah, that's pretty much the case. I wouldn't mind paying a bit more in taxes to have better roads. Sure beats needing new tires and alignments on your vehicle every time you turn around.
