Gauntlet eye vee? OK, that made me laugh. Gauntlet was a fun arcade game, and basically the definition of a "quarter muncher" with how fast your health could be sapped away. The first home port I got to play was Gauntlet IV (aka 4), and I was honestly surprised at how much more Tengen crammed into the game. The arcade game, plus a story mode, fantastic music, all the arcade voice... it was one hell of a port. Sure, it's to be expected given the time gap between the arcade's release and the Genesis port's release. But given Tengen's track record at times, to see how that company went the extra mile for this was a nice surprise.

Nice video - thanks! Based on what you've shown, your ranking makes sense to me. I had the C64 version - and considered it very good at the time. Notably, it had super-smooth scrolling - smoother than most other conversions in this video, though the sprites themselves did not move pixel-by-pixel, but rather in five-pixel jumps, which is how they got so many on screen, I guess. Most impressive version here for me is the Amstrad version - holy smoke! Amstrad games were normally slow and jerky as hell - but this one is just incredible. The Atari ST version looks magnificent too, I have to say. Pity there was no Amiga version! I had Garrison, though - and that was so close an imitation of Gauntlet that I don't know how they weren't sued!

I still have gauntlet IV. One of the things the home console versions nowadays have is that, while arcade perfect in terms of graphics and sound, it is not the actual arcade version that was released back in 1985. The home versions are revision 14, while the arcade is revision 5 or 6 for us americans. The closest version is gauntlet IV, but even then, the thief still comes out in the treasure rooms, where as in the arcade, he does not.

Are Monster Boy / Wonder Land games on your to-do list?.. A lot of them were ported under different names on various consoles and computers, and first one was rebranded as Revenge of Drancon and Adventure Island, which got its own sequels, and then Gameboy Adventure Island was the port of first sequel, AI2, AND THEN Gameboy game called Adventure Island 2 was actually Adventure Island 3... Game Gear did same for Wonder Boy... BUT PC Engine game called Adventure Island is actually Wonder Boy 3, which was also released as just Dragon's Curse in the West!? Gets so very confusing!.. XD Some also got sprite-swapped into Monica's Gang games in Brazil. Honestly I loved the gameplay of Super Adventure Island 2 (which is a side-scrolling RPG-lite like Zelda 2), and had to research that to find similar games and it's SO RIDICULOUS, even Kunio-kun franchise is less confusing with endless side-quels! xD

Even though the C64 could had probably done better, there was too many enemies to them to be hardware sprites, hardware scrolling should had taken some pressure from the slower processor, but the game was still processor intensive which meant it was one of those rare occasions that gave the Spectrum an advantage, also with it moving 1 character at a time it could avoid colour clash. Surprised to see they did such a great job on the Amstrad too considering it's limitations. I still spent hours and hours playing the C64 disk version with my friend, excellent fun in co-op. Later I played Gauntlet II on the Amiga which was obviously much better even though it was probably still just a lazy Atari ST port.

@@JustJamie1983 me I am biased against micro computers to me as a kid they were educational ewaste before I knew what ewaste was. Look up Mattel's Aquarius or the latter released Socrates by Vtech (yes that same vtech that did the Vsmile) and you'll probably understand why I hold such strong anti micro computer bias. They weren't fun they were graphically challenged to the contemporary consoles sharing space in the same years like the Aquarius couldn't lift a candle to the Colecovision nor the Socrates holding anything remotely close to the NES in terms of fun or graphics. I written them all off from any desirability by the time I reached an age I could start working so my early money making ventures were spread out for consoles and their addons forsaking any micro computer that I seen at flea malls garage sales or thrift stores. Not bashing those that own the micros just explaining why I had an aversion to them but your lists have opened my eyes a little into the better elements to them.

I played the ZX Spectrum version a lot, even got to the point where I noticed that they recycle the dungeon layouts in later levels over and over again. So I did not bother to go down to that last level (number 512?) because I kept piling up health with my warrior and just lost some health on a few more difficult levels. A great port of the arcade game to the rubber-keyed wonder. Little did I know that the Commodore 64 port did suffer a slowdown. CPU speed is of the essence if so many sprites are on screen simultaneously, it seems. The Atari 800 version should be better considering the speed advantage of the CPU compared to the C64.

Surprised Amiga never received a conversion. I think it had Gauntlet II maybe?
@JustJamie1983Ай бұрын
Yup. Had sequels but no original.

Gauntlet IV? You mean, Gauntlet 4? Gauntlet was itself based on an Atari 8-bit game called Dandy. Chucked quite a bit of cash at this one.

I do indeed.

Would you consider doing Prince of Persia, JJ?😁

I will be at some point 😀

Really like the commentary on the individual ports.

Thank you very much 😀

How about doing Gauntlet II?
@JustJamie1983Ай бұрын
Sure at some point.

Really great video. I disagree that the ST scrolling is smooth though - it’s awful! 👍
@JustJamie1983Ай бұрын
That's okay. Thanks for watching 👀 Like most of these videos that I upload. You are also likely seeing versions you have seen before.

What a money spinner this was, I believe they kept releasing revisions in the arcades to make them harder as players got better at it and so didn't spend as much on it. Can't have fair gameplay can we. 😱

Exactly.

I'm lucky enough to still own the megadrive version

Which port is the best and why is it the Megadrive version?
@JustJamie1983Ай бұрын
Have you watched it at all?
@HolammerАй бұрын
@@JustJamie1983 I wrote that before I watched it. The Megadrive winning was a forgone conclusion. The game was rigged from the start one could say.

Amiga should’ve got a port of original Gauntlet sadly no port
@JustJamie1983Ай бұрын
Yup, their is Garrison and that's a good clone.

The Genesis/Mega Port is the best but where is the NES port? It is np worse than third on this list.
@JustJamie198313 күн бұрын
It's very different. Pretty much a different game.
@DaisyLynn-xm1plАй бұрын
Why do you consistently skip ports on handhelds and consoles that were not successful? You also overlook PC ports and seem to ignore ports on Nintendo consoles that were released after the NES.
@JustJamie1983Ай бұрын
Which handheld had this game? Which Nintendo system had this game after NES?
@shadowside843323 күн бұрын
This was just a step too far for the 8-bit computers around at the time. Master System looked like a decent port, tho.
