As a old man gamer who grew up with pong and Intellivision, I find games such as this more to my liking because my eyesight is going and my coordination is as well. I've been playing this and Fire Emblem games for 25 years. I'm going to give the award to Reborn. It took a bit for me to get used to the new skill system BUT the psp version had major balance issues that reborn has fixed. Plus the RNG as far as recruiting percentages seem more accurate. A 30 percent chance at recruiting is a REAL 30 percent chance now.

Yeah, idk about the 64 game personally... but for those that do, yeah I hope so. The OG Ogre Battle though, yes! But what I really want to see: is to see FFT get the remake treatment, BUT, keep it very close to the original in gameplay. Just add VA, make it prettier, don't write the dialogue to sound like Shakespeare, and tweak skills and classes. So in short, we're ALL hoping Reborn is successful, but for different reasons. I'm not a fan of Reborn though. The writing is awful, cards are so insanely rare; the skill system is nice to spice up the gameplay, but the balancing is... off. I want sooo bad to love the game, since the og was my favorite game until about 6 years ago... and it's DEFINITELY better than the psp version, without debate... but it's still just not as unique as the og was

I agree! I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I just started the game this past weekend and after watching a few videos of of the PSP version (which I sunk about 120h in back in the day) I realized I wish they hadn’t smoothed out the sprites that much, I feel it really removes a layer of depth and charm that the psp graphics had. I do understand why they’ve done it though, and I feel it looks better handheld than on a larger screen. I do really like the changes they’ve made to classes and skills so far, the psp version made grinding pretty tedious.

Fun note about the bad word filter: One of the default clan names-Flamescale-triggers the filter without you even changing it. Seems like people think this is because of “mescal” as in the drug mescaline.

After bouncing off the PSP version with its poorly implemented mechanics like class leveling and crafting, Reborn has kind of converted me and I think I like Tactics Ogre more than even FFT now. Absolute stellar port!

I grew up playing Tactics Ogre: the Knight of Lodis on GBA and actually never played any version of Let Us Cling Together until Reborn. It took me a really long time to get used to not having full control over the order I move my units since KoL had the two teams taking turns, and there are some other mechanics that I miss, but overall I'm loving the much greater depth and balancing of Reborn! It's exciting to finally be discovering another chapter of the Ogre Battle saga.

KoL was great in its own right and did just enough different to feel fresh in a game that otherwise looks like the original. The emblem system was so cool and allowed for some organic unit growth and customization.

Finally, someone that does a proper job at the topic! EDIT: Though, I would love to see some more minor details such as that effect @8:02, which I don't think is part of the PSP version. People shouldn't be afraid of a video being "hours long" (Tim Rogers is the extreme example).. archiving things in ample detail also has its benefits. Little things can make or break a person's interest in playing a version or game.

0:15 a lot is recycled with stories from tactics ogre to final fantasy tactics. Lancelot tartaros has the eyepatch on a different eye for art and sprite in reborn. It's too easy except for suicidal AI (if your guest dies it is permanent, and you dont get AI options until about 8 battles in) that rushes enemies (counterattacks to spears or ranged will do friendly fire to an ally just in front), and they won't buff your characters/monsters do ranged attacks, and bows outside range which is manually done through line of sight. Crafting is 100% and you can flip baldur blowguns by reselling at a higher price for infinite money (and making fruit of the adept).

@@AmodeusR I just beat the final boss and the end game marathon is tedious as you can't restock for a dozen battles without doing it again and the final battle needs prep (ease spell for stun, max out bombs for beast tamers to have 4 shots of 200-300 damage with lobber from afar, and fruit of the seraph for faster finishing moves and magic he will steal) while it won't save your changes, which is stupid. Chariot tarot can only help so much with RNG. No way I'd play this or star ocean again, but at least they patched Lanselot Tartaros' eyepatch, pun intended, as the art and game sprite had different eyes before.

That's exactly what it is. Reborn is a tactical masterpiece, but the PSP version feels a lot more like a deep RPG you can sink hundreds of hours into. Very different games.

@@steel5897 reborn takes about 50 hours to end, and multiple paths though redoing battles for anchor points postgame (and those stronghold battles anywhere more than 4 let alone blue crystals/ocean moving is hard to see) is stupid rather than take you right to where you made that choice (I could make separate save files anyway so it is not a real feature). You just have better crafting, fast forward, voice acting/remastered sound. But yes time used is filler (no idea how people put up with dragon quest postgame except maybe underused dq swords), especially if you have a revert to leveling a late game plot one handed sword for the final battle. What defines a masterpiece? I feel it's unfair to final fantasy 2 to get ragged on for its cryptic bs, or ff3 for forced jobs when tactics ogre and chrono trigger do the same bs (haste go brr, but don't use marle for lavos as haste helm won't waste turns he can negate immunity or characters that enemies have magic resistance to their element).

I've never played the PSP version, only the PS1 and now the Reborn. I which Reborn kept some of parts of the skills system from PSP, because the auto-skill system is too much RNG based (like, if your mage don't proc Meditate you lose a turn; if your Cleric don't proc Mother's Blessing he/she cannot heal properly). Otherwise, i feel like the Reborn is the definitive version of this game i love so much!!

Playing Reborn now. I played the Super Famicom original so the amount of changes for me is mind boggling. Really having a good time, and appreciating all the QoL and streamlining changes. The sprite work is OK. I read that, rather than a filter, they actually went and redid the sprites i.e. adding more pixels and details in certain places. The orchestrated music is just killer 👍

Most importantly for me tho was wanting to support Matsuno and the Ogre Battle saga. Who knows how many years that dude has left to work on more games in one of my fave series? The fan translation patch for the Sega Saturn version of Tactics Ogre was recently released. The fan translation transcribed the English script from the PSP version. Aeon Genesis’ fan translation of the Super Famicom version transcribed the English script from the PS1 version.

Great video! The most competent I seen so far, most videos I seen so far get so much stuff from the Snes/PS1/Saturn versions as well as PSP versions just so wrong. 22:54 LOL! You use a Logitech G600 too! xD I loved Tactics Ogre on the PS1 back in the day, beat it over 10 times, I even liked it more then the PSP version. The PSP version felt like they took Tactics Ogre and tried to go more the Final Fantasy Tactics route, with many skills you could learn and setup each character. Also the combat menu was vertical. Reborn feels like they went back to the PSP Tactics Ogre and this time go back to the original Snes game, with horizontal combat menus, Elements on units and the system of fours.

I’d choose Reborn for its rendition of the soundtrack. In Reborn, the soundtrack is arranged with a live orchestra, as opposed to MIDI. The PSP version of Tactics Ogre has synth samples good enough to be mistaken for actual instruments, but nothing beats live orchestra. Hitoshi Sakimoto and company extended the composition of most of the music tracks for the PSP version. These changes to the composition have been carried over to the new Reborn version. The SNES and PSOne versions have obviously synthy soundtracks, though it sounded great for its time. The Saturn version of the soundtrack stands between the PSOne and PSP versions. I refer to the PSP version as a revision. The original SNES version was developed and published by Quest Corporation, which has been swallowed by Square Enix. The Saturn version was published by Riverhillsoft, which has been swallowed by Althi, Inc. The PSOne version was developed by Quest Corporation and published by Artdink (which is known for the Sword Art Online series) in Japan and by Atlus USA in North America. The PSP version was developed and published by Square Enix. The Reborn version was developed by Algebra Factory (which also worked on Dragon Quest Treasures) and Square Enix and published by Square Enix.

Wow, such a detailed review, with enough depth. I played a lot of the original SNES and PS1 version and I didnt get on the train of the PSP version bc I can't play gamplay broken games. I guess my intuition of consumer was right and in the end the conceptor, Matsuno, made yet another version to warrant the fact the psp version is a kind of FF7: remove difficulty, adds customability until the game loses its essence.

I tried to find a detailed explanation of what changes they made in Reborn, and this is exactly what I needed. In fact you went well and beyond my expectations. For me, with the changes, Reborn wins over the PSP version around 9 to 1. Those orchestral pieces sound so grand.

Future note for crisis core. Characters feature their remake designs but not in the cgi cutscenes and the prerendered cutscenes had deliberate visual/graphical effects that weren't easily achieved in real-time in engine so the Reunion versions of those scenes lack those flourishes. (Like sephiroths sword having a glow and Zacks sword being cut through with a heat effect for example) I felt those were the 2 recurring things that might get missed due to me seeing zero mentions of it. The game doesn't really seem to have a notable community to get these tiny things discussed

I just dusted off the psp version I had laying around because i'm too broke to buy Unicorn Overlord but seeing all the cool stuff that got reworked in Reborn makes me want to get that first lol. Its pretty crazy how many times they want to remake this game I guess it's that one game the developers just have too many ideas or ones that conflicted with the current systems that they just always want to try pushing for a better version of their idea of the best game. The PSP version is probably my favorite game of all time. I really didn't care for Reborn, though I wanted to love it, it just did a lot of things I just wasn't down with which was a shame. Glad people are into it and bringing more eyes onto Tactics Ogre though. I'm quite happy to stick with the PSP version while people play the Reborn version. More choice is always a good thing.

Still remember the unintended exploit in the sfc version. In the intro where they introduce Lanselot and co, you can walk Denam up the east side of the building, and throw a stone to back attack Warren. If it hits, you'll get 100xp and level up because they actually have them at a pretty absurd level in the original for that one map.

Thank you for mentioning One Vision. To me, I think that's the best version of the game. Maybe... it's a tough call between OV and Reborn. But if you even remotely dislike key aspects of Reborn like the cards or union level, then OV is by far the best, don't even think about it. Tricky thing with me is that I love both of them for different reasons, so it's hell picking which to focus on.

I enjoyed finial fantasy tatics, i never heard of this game until the other day as i don't spend much time in the jrpg or jstrat genre. I must be some sort of outlier as i in the right mood like extreme depth and what others would call tedium. More story and added quests is always welcome and rewrites for bad translation or silly lines make sense when going from one language/culture to another, i honestly don't know how many times i've ended up laughing myself out of my chair due to a badly translated line delivery...BUT, not at the cost of gameplay! There are a few words that put me off of a game "made for modern audience" "streamlined" "more accessible" "removed features" Update all the graphics you want, help me better translate what the char is trying to say, i'm not a pureist, but leave the damn gameplay in tact aside from bug fixing or reworking a UI. This video was very helpful for me to narrow down the version to play.

Really REALLY! Praying for a Final fantasy tactics Advance 1 and 2 to get a remake. I really loved playing the first one and while I haven’t played a whole lot of 2 i still like it.

My only complaint about Reborn is the over-reliance on RNG for auto skills. They should be innate, and always working given the normal triggering circumstances.

Yep, they should've kept the PSP version of skill activation being manual. Now there's no strategy involved.

Thanks for this! As someone who bought Tactics Ogre on PSP but never even launched it, I think Reborn is the one for me, but I really can't stand what was done to the sprites. I really hope fan modders are working on the Steam version to make them look better.

The piccolo player in Blasphemous Experiment is the Tactics Ogre equivalent of Epic Sax man. I didn't know they live recorded with an orchestra for reborn, amazing. This is how square should do all of their remasters.

I just downloaded the PSP version on Android and turn based games are my chess and checkers and I love the exp leveling class and shops on these games and skills its so rewarding especially playing on touch screen most games you need a controller and gets frustrating .

Sega Saturn version is the best. Didn't realize it was better than the PS1 version until I saw this.

I hear archers are less broken in Reborn and I just wanna wreck armies with my corps of bow girls. Every battle was Agincourt and it was a great time.

It's not even that archers are "bad". They're just not the best unit in the game anymore. My end game team uses 2.

I think the PSP version is the one to go with especially considering how great it looks on the much smaller screen and that you can have it anywhere.
