Just venting here: This video should've been done 2 weeks ago but I had to re-record, re-voice, and re-edit the entire thing twice. First to revise the script (not up to standard) and second because of a huge hard drive problem (my fault). I hope the videos pacing makes sense as I worked through this one while pretty scatter-brained

12:02 SOLD! Honestly, why remakes have such a strong bloom? It not so bad here, but it has ruined some games for me, like Sonic Colors Ultimate or Wind Waker HD. While I already have the original PS1 and PS2 games, I still think it's worth buying the Steam version for the ease of access, and the possibility of mods: making custom levels, adjusting things like colisions and frame data, removing nitpicks (e.g. being able to skip cutscenes is good, but having a permanent on-screen prompt is not), etc. It's too early to say it for certain, but I have a good feeling about Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series.

So glad to see you cover these. Klonoa is a terrific series and I own all the English language release games. I even got Phantasy Reverie on NS and PS4 Pro and have only played through Door to Phantomile so far. I'd seen the Wii version before and think it's really strange how they blend the Wii version with the original audio and character designs. I also definitely note as a PAL gamer, it feels significantly harder simply because everything is moving at normal speed for once. Personally I still prefer the original game as while the Wii version fleshed out Phantomile, it also took out a lot of the atmosphere.

I just played through Klonoa 1 on the reverie collection. Kinda disappointed that it doesn't come with the PS1 version but it's understandable since the Wiimake fits in better with the sequel graphically.

2 player support jump was a joke as well as 3:45 not making tutorials optional by default. You get slapped every 2 seconds for basic stuff like hearts and wind bullets. Klonoa 2 loads slowly on the switch and Austin said they cut wii bonuses let alone worse wind bullets. No wonder this felt bastardized at $40.
@MoonSarito2 жыл бұрын
Honestly I think the Wii version is still the best, but I always put the Phantemile language in the options before playing (which in my opinion should be the default option), it's so weird to see Klonoa speaking in English and I think which spoils the vibe of the game a bit.
@marinellovragovic12072 жыл бұрын
@@MoonSarito the biggest problem with the Wii version is the rewritten script. Instead of doing a new modern translation of the PS1 game, the script robs Klonoa most of his dialogue and gives it to Huepoe, making him a walking cardboard cutout.

I've become bit of a Klonoa enjoyer the past year and while I think it's neat that they're remaking/porting the games over to modern hardware, it highlights a pet peeve I have with a lot of these products. Look at the comparison at 9:00. It's supposed to be a dark, late game area that contrasts to the brighter cheerful places you started the game with, but it's insanely bright in the remakes. The Wii version even has a ton of bloom, which indicates that the light is so intense that it's overwhelming. In the new remaster, they toned that down somewhat and the colors are more saturated, which is nice, but it's all still way too bright. I can never understand why this is such a common decision in remasters/remakes. It's not like monitors aren't able to display deeper darker colors correctly or anything. There's a bunch of other visual differences that annoy me, but whatever. I'd only buy this so I can play Klonoa 2, since the game emulates kinda poorly and I really don't think that's worth $50 or however much it costs. It just really sucks when publishers put out these flawed products and expect the fanbase to buy them with the vague hint that maybe they'll make a new game if it's successful.

Great video, Austin! One thing to note at least in the Spanish localization is that is unfortunately very low quality and translators are not credited, which leads me to think it was rushed under machine translation and post-editing, a very common practice lately. I also got an update for it right away so maybe the Japanese version is more updated than in other regions? I don't know, I'm normally very sensitive to frame rates so it's odd that I haven't felt any of the problems people are reporting. The demo felt very laggy by comparison.

Here's my take, I finally just got the fantasy reverie series on Steam this week. I've played Klonoa on the PS1 through at least 15 times since childhood, got the re-release of this original on the PS3 from the PSN store. I'd prefer this version, just needs a bit smoothening up, not a full 3d re-render. Klonoa 1 from the fantasy reverie series is good and has the replayability.. I just feel that they didn't capture certain environments as well. Vision 4 for example didn't give off the haunted vibes I got, I thought maybe its just old feelings, but I went back and seen more of a pastel blending of the blues in the renewed reverie.. It overall felt more lightened up, more foggy effects and less haunted. The color blending was so good actually combined with the 3d rendering on a platformer that I did jump into a couple of walls that I'd otherwise not, so maybe it's a me problem but I sort of prefer the original, just wish they could smoothen that up and re-release it just like that.. I definitely don't regret the purchase, it's worth a few playthroughs for sure and still haven't ever actually experienced Klonoa 2 in any format, so I'm pretty hyped for when I get the time.

Door to Phantomile is best played on PS1 if you ask me, a lot of its charm is missing and the compressed voice lines are really immersion breaking outside of the PS1 version. Klonoa 2 is best played as part of the Phantasy Reverie collection I think but they've gotta buff the hitbox of the wind bullet, it's absurd that you can't snag the enemies because of a 1 inch height difference between you and the enemy. Regardless I'm glad people checked Klonoa out after the trailer and it seems like we might get a Klonoa 3 thanks to the newfound interest.

Both should be included as they were when they launched completely untouched minus aspect ratio. I also don't care for this DLC nonsense. (I tried to do the same with the original Lunatea's Veil, but it kept crashing in Joliant, so I never finished it) While it does feel like I'm missing more in Phantasy Reverie more than I should, and that is rather frustrating, it's by far the most accessible way to play the games and I still enjoy them. On top of that, I've heard that this is to see if making new Klonoa content is worth Bandai Namco's time and money. Even if you own the original games and a few of these changes turns you off, please support Phantasy Reverie if you enjoy playing Klonoa. It might just die out again otherwise.

I still can't believe Klonoa is male, spent my entire childhood thinking he was a girl)) Also, from the footage I see here these remasters look to me much worse compared to the originals, which had a smooth & stylized look. The modernized ones look very Pokemon-ish in their presentation with these ultra-clean simplistic textures and models, almost like a mobile game. Maybe just me though)

When Klonoa 3?

I was considering getting this but seeing as I only have the series S and a Switch I'll just find a rom.

The modern day collection needs to sell well in order to get new games and old games remade! This is the last chance they will give Klonoa a chance to shine! It has to sell well now!

@@lordmonarch2995 yeah the industry has threatened my favorite franchises with that too many times for me to give a fuck. That manipulative bullshit can kiss the fattest part of my ads.

The Lost media wiki does not know what lost media even is. I 100% guarantee you the files for this game still exist. Just because the public can’t access them does not mean they are lost
@PKSuperStar2563 ай бұрын
Yeah, there are pretty much two types of Lost Media. "Lost" Media is for ones where the files or source material for something are being kept hidden by the owners or creators for some reason and actual Lost Media for when it's completely gone. As of recently, the demo for the mobile version of Klonoa: Door to Phantomile has been found. It's possible that the full version is out there somewhere.

@@PKSuperStar256 it is definitely out there. Both on a hard drive or server somewhere and likely on at least a few phones that haven’t been turned on in many years

@@SaturnTubes, who knows how many players in Japan still kept it after so many years? If they use the Internet in this day and age and someone is at least bilingual to speak to them (or the other way around), this game could be made accessible again.

@@PKSuperStar256 Japanese piracy laws are extreme, especially compared to the west. All Roms and emulators are a crime, and someone was even imprisoned for doing a let’s play that spoiled a game’s ending. So the chances of a Japanese player making their phone available for this purpose is unlikely

@@SaturnTubes, oh wow, I didn't know that. Sheesh, that makes things even more difficult. But even then, this version of the game isn't even sold anymore.

I've never tried Klonoa but it looks very fun, and it's a personal opinion but I don't really like its design, it seems to be taken from Sonic 😅

The klonoa phantasy reverie version since it's closer to the original one plus easier to play

I'd say the originals as they are the most faithful to their original visions and have the most passion and soul put into them.
