I personally like Weller 12 a lot. But I also really like the full proof as well. Not a big fan of CYPB or single barrel. And definitely don't care for special reserve. But we all have different tastes and it's all good. Bourbon is just a fun thing, and a good sip of any bourbon is always great.
@rockpoptunes61919 ай бұрын
My father ran two of the largest retail liquor chains in Corpus Christi and Fort Worth Texas over a 50 year period beginning in 1950. WL Weller was the best selling bourbon in Fort Worth. It was reasonably priced and readily available as was Weller 107. The liquor business has changed a lot. Distillers and owners like Sazerac limit production and supply to drive prices up.
@Futureguitarist157 ай бұрын
How do the distilleries benefit from scarcity if they're still coming from distributors at the same price? It's not like Buffalo trace sees any profits that scalpers make on Weller or pappy or eh taylor. If a $50-100 bottle is flying off of shelves you'd want to keep it stocked and make it accessible to more people so you sell more. Seems to me like this is just after effects of covid limiting production and not expecting the bourbon boom. After all, whisky production is limited by time. They can't just fire up another production line or start working overtime when demand rises. It's going to take years to recover from a massive increase in demand.
@CapableFox646 ай бұрын
@@Futureguitarist15it’s much more expensive to make weller than Fireball. Broadly, sazerac requires stores/distributors to sell some quantity of the cheap stuff with ultra high margin to gain the right to purchase those weller/whiskey bottles. This is how they can increase net margin via products like rain, fireball, Wheatley, etc. and simultaneously have a net decrease in production cost across the product portfolio. This is why total wine gets way more pappy than anyone else, for example.

Happy birthday Trenton! I own the SR, Antique 107, and 12 and enjoy them all. Last January I was at Neat whiskey bar in Buffalo, NY and did a flight of Old Rip 10, Lot B, CYPB, and the 12 year. My order of preference was Lot B, CYPB, Old Rip, and 12. When I enjoy the 12 most is when I don't drink it with the others in one sitting. In context with the others it is really "woody" but by itself I enjoy it. Same with Woodford Double Oak.

I really like hearing about different parts of the country and what is and isn't available. Here in Alberta our shelves are full of special reserve, $40 CAD, which is like $27 USD. But I have never seen a single other of the wellers here ever, and pretty well have lost hope to try them.
@jasono.16299 ай бұрын
Wow what a great price! Weller Special Reserve is usually $50 USD at the very cheapest, but typically $70 to $80 USD here in California. Full Proof is $200 at most places here.

So far the only Weller I have is the Special Reserve and it’s probably my favorite out of everything I have at the moment. I’ve been wanting to get my hands on some others. Kurt you definitely have to try syrup on breakfast sausage, so good. Also something that you’d probably never think to try but it’s oddly delicious, open face biscuit topped with hash browns over easy egg bacon and covered with white gravy.

OKAY I finally figured it out! I could never figure out how you and Trent could be tasting all the different flavors when your bourbon level in the glass didn't hardly move?? I would taste bourbons and almost never get definitive different flavors! So I tried taking baby sips like you and Trent trying to make it last as long as possible, WHAT A DIFFERENCE I actually started tasting different flavors not sure what they all are yet but butterscotch, maple syrup, orange and coffee seem to be big I HAVE NOT tasted fruity pebbles yet! the size of the sip made all the difference!

I have never seen a special reserve or antique 107 in a store near me. The full proof and 12 year are always around between $200 and $300. Last week I walked into a store that had Single barrel, CYPB and EH Taylor barrel proof for $300 each. Lot of money but I thought I'd never see them again so bought all three. Next day went in a store that had them for $200 each. So now I have two of each but the average cost is now $250 before tax. This is NJ where the Sopranos had nothing on liquor store owners. Happy birthday Kurt.

I look forward to a time when the prices of these come back to Earth... I stood in line at a Bourbon drop, paid $90 for a Weller 12 (best option available when I got to the front) and was completely underwhelmed. I'd rather find store picks of other products than chase these hype bottles. Great show again!
@Guy_GuyGuy9 ай бұрын
No bourbon is worth standing in line for, paying secondary, or paying gouged prices for. There's so many good options that are readily available on the shelf at every price point. After months of looking for Buffalo Trace and finding it at a retail $26... it was nice pour, no doubt. But I preferred my Old Forester 86 which waits there on the shelf for me every time, and certainly didn't hold a candle to OF 1910 which I frequently saw Buffalo Trace the same price as.
@Mrbigdaddymanamale9 ай бұрын
@@Guy_GuyGuy Got a Buffalo Trace and found it just worse than the Wild Turkey 101 that I always have on my shelf. I mean, it was fine, but it was mild flavor and kind of watery imo.
@ChristopherNeeme9 ай бұрын
@@Mrbigdaddymanamale WT101 is best compared to the bottled in bond whiskies, for me Buffalo Trace is the best of the entry level brands a notch below like Jim Beam, regular Jack, Early Times Black, nothing above this category. That's all that it's made as.
@Mrbigdaddymanamale9 ай бұрын
@@ChristopherNeeme Perhaps its fair to grade based on proof. However, I can get wt101 for 23.00 or old forester 86 for 18.00 and the buffalo trace is 35.00. The value just isn't there imo.

I wouldnt be upset if someone poured it for me and id maybe snag a bottle at msrp because i do get in the mood for an oaky bourbon every now and then but I'm certainly not going to hunt or pay hundreds for it. I had Maker's Cask Strength and was excited. Then, it tasted so bitter I almost gagged. Called Maker's and apparently the pond water (they use a pond apparently) on that lot was off. The number should have ideally been "under 2". Anything "above 5" they couldn't bottle. The guy asked me for a ton of numbers off the bottle on the bottom, then the front and then said, "9.3, so wow, please let us send you coupons for another bottle, a hat, a shirt, etc" haha. Very nice people. The problem is, it was like if you puked off a certain drink and can't touch it again. It killed me for Maker's. Ugh.

I suspect that on these blind test it may not be truly accurate. It seems to me that your palate will be affected rather quickly. I say that because on the 9-29 live episode that had E.T. B&B beating out W.T. RB. I did a comparison myself as I have both. Disclaimer: “ I realize that taste is subjective” And even though Early Times B&B is really good, it was not on the level of the rare breed. I will be picking up the Weller 107 Saturday, so will be good to compare the three. Want to say thank you to Kurt and Trenton and the SLB team for the fantastic content you post. Your content has turned me on to unbelievably wonderful bourbons I may not of ever tried.
