They see everyone else as an obstacle, so less an thinking being and more just an object in the way, also despite technically being abhumans they see the impirium as loud, stupid, annoying, and if they realized what the squats had and that the squats were abhumans they would probably try an take everything the squats have, which would be inconvenient and annoying, so they keep everything secret from them and have the impirium think they're just a neutral xenos faction so they'll be left alone.

Well, the other races at least have a goal. Necrons want to rule again, Tau wants to convert everyone to Communism (or whatever they’re wanting. Admittedly, I don’t know much about them), the Eldar want to thrive again and protect their worlds (again, not terribly familiar with their history), and Chaos wants to corrupt everyone. All Tyranids seem to want to do is eat everything and spread until they’re all that’s left. You can at least somewhat negotiate with the other goals. You really can’t negotiate with hunger. Haven’t you ever seen a Snickers commercial?

It's funny because that kind of happened in Warhammer Fantasy. The human's fantasy Europe spanning empire, the dwarves, the vampires and the orcs could barely defeat the hordes of Chaos demons and Chaos fantasy Vikings. Also the reborn founder of the Empire and the other races champions got their ass whipped by that world's version of Abbadon (I forget his name.) Then the Orcs champion comes and just hands fantasy Abaddon his ass, winning the war for the "good guys". Also the Orc armies ended up being the ones that ultimately routed the Chaos hordes. The best part was that in real life Games Workshop asked the fans "who would you like to win the war, the Empire or Chaos" and the fans said "the Orcs, that'd be hilarious."

I could be wrong, but I thought during the Dark Age they were rival powers in a cold war. I think there have been hints that the Emperor was around and knew Slanesh was coming, so was pushing the Human Federation to strike before it happened, but the Machine Rebellion happened.

Actually the Lore implies that Khorne, Nurgle and Tzeentch were all present in the Warp during the Dark Age of Technology but the barrier between the Warp and Reality was much stronger back then than it is in the time of 40K thus they were much less known and felt in the Galaxy. The birth of Slaanesh caused the barrier between Warp and Realspace to tear open into the Eye of Terror which allows the Chaos Gods to be much more directly and strongly felt in the Galaxy now, basically it has never been better for them than now.

I was under the misunderstanding that the unified eldar race at their height was capable of basically building psychic prisons that were able to contain the chaos gods, but with Slash's affinity for eldar souls and their race being reduced by I think it was over a third and then the remainder split into multiple factions, there is no way they could approach that level of power again. But I'm definitely no lore Master of Warhammer so I'm not surprised I misunderstood.

I like to imagine the Imperium tolerates Jokaero on the justification that as they bear such a close resemblance to terran orangutans they must be related, likely due to orangutans being taken away from terra in the past by xenos, and thus they would share a common ancestor to humanity and not technically be xenos. The Mechanicus Genetors are aware that this is in fact a myth, as they share little genetic similarity and are more likely a result of convergent evolution, but they understand to keep quiet about this and not question the established doctrine, especially given how useful this myth is for justifying the Imperiums hypocrisy.

To be honest, Necron Human cooperation almost seems non-heretical. They aren't AI, but their closeness to Iron Men would be the risk...except Necrons cannot fall to Chaos. One Imperial sector might border a Necron dynasty ruled by a sane and rational lord who helps out with Tyranid and Ork incursions when things get out of hand because he wants to be left the heck alone to do his thing and they're a threat to him too, so things are pretty chill between officials on both sides. Another sector might be on the front lines of a war between the Imperium and a dynasty that's embraced the Destroyer Cult, which seeks to wipe out all life in the galaxy. Yet another Imperial sector might be nowhere near the front lines but maintain a genocidal hatred of all Necrons, simply because they're xenos.

Seriously that is the biggest gripe I have with the tau. Most of it seems to only be the kroot or Vespucci as their allies. I get that those guys are meant to balance out the tau's ineffectiveness in close combat but more diversity would be nice.

it makes sense that the imperium would ally with xenos when needed. The galaxy is too big for humans to habit or control everything so they need help in order to keep control. Especially when it comes to chaos or the nids. But it's clear that for the most part it's a case by case basis to which groups with each of the factions that they will side with.

I'm surprised at how often multiple factions have work together, and I expect them all to come together to eventually fight against the coming tyranid horde considering how it's already been explained that the massive fleets that they're having to fight against are just Scout groups and each faction INDIVIDUALLY is already struggling with those.

I have always wondered if the imperium had handled the tau better. Could a truce have been made. Or a ally. Nothing in tau lore states they are malevolent or power hungry just expanding when needed. Also usually killing other xeno.

They don't usually kill other xenos except fot the Orks and Tyranids and Dark Eldar. On the Lexicanum and the other Warhammer 40k wiki the Tau allied with or conquered and teamed up with at least several other xeno species including many humans, the Kroot, the wasp like Vespid, the pyschic bear moles the Nicassar, the stone dwarf like Demiurg, the blob like Golg and a species of basically super intelligent sentient shrimp (name escapes me) that are great at making and engineering small machines. If the Tau can't willingly team up with a species, they'll mind control and/or biologically change a species until they're a species willing to join the Greater Good under the Tau's leadership. However yeah I agree.

Meanwhile in the Great Work there was a a xeno species that the Imperium tolerated to extinction. Turned over they could grind them up to extent human life. So despite being under Imperial protection they got a slow, horrifying exterminatus.
