This is Geezer Butlers amplifier rig from Black Sabbath, through Heaven and Hell right up to "The End".

i've recorded geezer a few times in the studio, and i can tell you this....he can plug in any bass straight into a direct box....right to tape/protools...and it sounds like geezer butler. 90+% of his tone is in his fingers and how he plays.
@jagmarc

Yeah I'd also noticed this thing happens too when plug straight into DI or even direct to desk. It's as though all the stage gear is just the icing on the cake.

In 1971 , his rig was made up of 6 Laney cabs , a 100 watt Laney amp and 2 100 watt slaves .Set up like two normal 100 watt head and two stacked cabs on either side of a stack consisting of a pair of Laney 2x 15 cabs. stacked up with slave head.

Very well done video. Thank you so much for providing the info without any BS, and especially without any crappy music in the background. Your videos should be used to teach other people how to make a proper video! Properly researched, with evidence to back each point made, and all the pertinent data without any of the selfish "listen to me and how smart I am" stuff that so many other channels have. Excellent, sir. Just excellent. As a forever Geezer fan.... : )

Thanks for the great informative video. I have loved Black Sabbath Music ever since I was a teenager back in the 1970s. I always wanted to play my own music, my own compositions and improvisations. Black Sabbath inspired me. But I never knew how they produced the sound that they created. It is great to learn how they created the music and what equipment they used. Not every teenager can afford all that expensive equipment, so we made do with what we could get. But much new and interesting music is created on a very low budget. We can not all become Heavy Metal Rock Gods. But we can try and in the process learn a lot and maybe create some interesting sounds.

I take my hat off to you, you've done your research. It's also nice to see young un's passionate about old rock music. The only thing I'd like to see added is a look at the bass players style and some of their best bass lines. Black Sabbath were the first rock band I got into, I love Geezer's bass playing, his sound and his song writing ain't bad either. He turned me on to playing the bass and I play quite a few of his bass lines everyday when practicing. Cheers.

Geezer used in the early 70s stock Laney Bass 100 cabs loaded with Fanes. You can see the cabs on a few photos. He used 3 straight cabs and 1 angled "cheese wedge" Laney cab (he may have more cabs at this time but the arent much photos of the early gear. I own one of his BS labelled Laney cabs dated to 69/70...beaten as hell but sounds so damn good,, cheers man
@WhichBass
@WhichBass 6 жыл бұрын
Awesome, I read the Laney cabs were custom but didn't know what was loaded into them. Tell me more about your cab, this is Geezer's actual one or they had a signature made?!
@evaDsselesU
@evaDsselesU 6 жыл бұрын
Mine cab is modified with a speakon jack and i bought it with Celestion G12H 30w greenbacks dated to 1975. The cab was definietly a Sabbath cab assuming from the band logo sprayed on the back with army letters. They used to mark they gear with that type of font in the 70s. Watch the video on youtube named "War Pigs - Black Sabbath (Rare Footage) [1970/xx/xx @ Germany]" and you can see at 0:07 Geezer fron the back and a cabinet labelled with that logo. And assuming from the little metal plate with the serial number and the writing "Laney Bass 100" i assume the cab was owned by Geezer...but maybe they used it as a PA or a guitar cab. :) Another famous user from this Bass 100 cab and the Supergroup head was Noel Gallagher. :)

Brother, I know that I'm late to the party, but your channel has truly been great source of information. I truly love it. Could you please tell me - would you ever do a video on a rig of Marco Hietala (ex. Nightwish/Tarot)? Literal idol but he's always been very silent about his gear (nor was I able to find anything concrete for all of the years I follow him). All I know is that he started on a Charvel bass, moved on to Warwicks (Infinity/Vampyre models), that he uses a Roland's Boss pedalboard/processor and that's it. I wasn't able to find any info on his amps, heads and so on. Your investigation skills are AMAZING so I put my cards on you. x'D Whether you do the video or not, thanks anyways! All the best!

Is there a breakdown of Clutch's Dan Maines rig? If not, could there be one, in the future? His tones are just so diverse, I would LOVE more info!!

Enjoyed this......On the Last Supper tour, Geezer used an unidentifiable, well to me anyway, bass that has scalloped frets up at the E fret area.....

Great video, man. I would request D.D. Verni, unfortunately there isn't a lot of information on his rig. It would be great to see a Ben Shepherd (Soundgarden) or even a Shavo Odajian rig.

Some players that I think have cool rigs that would make for good videos: Simon Gallup, Justin Chancellor, Jack Cassady, Jaco Pastorius, Al Cisneros, Tatsu Mikami, Peter Hooke, Mike Watt, and John Paul Jones.
