I was raised Mormon and close to the age of 30 I read the book Meditation for Dummies by Stephan Bodian. I began a mantra meditation practice where I would recite a positive mantra that contradicted my negative thinking and change my mantra every week. I would repeat a mantra in my mind and anytime my mind wandered I would return my focus back to repeating the mantra in my mind. I did mantra meditation 45 minutes, 5 days a week for 18 months. My thoughts actually became more positive and calmer. This benefited me 10x more than going to church did. After reading the book Meditation for Dummies, I also started feeling fear, anger, jealousy, and pride until they go away rather than suppressing them all the time. Because of the Bible's and Book of Mormon's teachings, I had tried to suppress these feelings for years. It was such a relieve to not try to suppress these feelings all the time. I got tired of listening to my church teach that feeling fear, anger, jealousy, and pride are evil. I also got tired of them saying to meditate, but never teaching how to do meditation to develop concentration. For almost 16 years I thought I was meditating until I read the book Meditation for Dummies. When I was 38 I just couldn't handle going to church anymore and quit going to church. I now read a Buddhist newsletter daily, read some Buddhist books (favorite book Lovingkindness the Revolutionary Art of Happiness by Sharon Salzberg) and do mantra meditation regularly. I, however am not Buddhist and don't attend any Buddhist church.

@@richardwalters9249 I don't agree that there is any difference between those two beliefs. Both are "blind" in my opinion. If we don't know something, we should simply be honest with ourselves and accept what we don't know. Though the mind doesn't like doing that. However, the more we seek scientific knowledge about the universe and neurobiology, the closer we will get to understanding reality.

@@centaur7607 how can we not know that the universe could not possibly come into existence for no reason at all ? I know that it didn’t. I’m sorry if you can’t reason that out for yourself. The fact that the universe exists …. I mean we KNOW two things: 1. It’s mathematically impossible for it to have existed forever. ( it it did, we could have never been able to traverse an “infinity” of past time to reach “today”). 2. There has to be a reason/cause/something to bring the universe into existence. My point is: knowing/believing/accepting/reasoning/establishing these facts in order to conclude these things is NOT BLIND. It’s logic that’s well-thought-out. To say I believe these two facts by “faith” is accurate. But, it’s just as correct to say I believe these two facts are true by logic as well. It’s not blind. It agrees with what we observe.
@centaur76072 ай бұрын
@@richardwalters9249 I will tell you that an argument that any god exists, in particular the Christian god, based on the logic you are using, is called a "God of the Gaps" fallacy. Since we don't know how the universe came to be, many insert God in as the explanation, filling that "gap" in our knowledge. Previously, there were more gaps, so a god or myths were used to explain everything: the sun and stars, weather, disease, etc. The more scientific knowledge we gathered, the less gods and myths were used to explain these natural phenomena that can now be well understood. The gap is shrinking, and we can now only insert a god in because we don't know precisely how or why everything came into being. That is simply another thing which we do not know yet, but inserting a god to explain that gap is fallacy. We simply don't know, but scientists are still seeking real knowledge to find out as much as possible. Again, the more scientific knowledge we have, the closer we are to understanding reality.

Seeing empathy along with reason to me is more palatable but that's just me, dude. There's never really a perfect mix per se but also like you said, find your niche. Question: when you were a pastor of your own church, did you ever tell (or imply to) your flock who they ought to vote for? I'm an agnostic atheist. The majority of the people in my area profess to be Christian/Religious/spiritual and I can certainly be friendly with them. *But beliefs inform actions.* If the same person I am friendly with in my neighborhood puts up a sign in their front yard supporting a particular political candidate I don't support (think: a large, orange, hate filled, would-be Mussolini type) who's supporters would just love to see me and mine with less rights and protections under the law, I reserve the right to stop being so friendly. If you feel that that's childish, so be it. I think it's naive and childish to pretend that political belief should be ignored. Again, belief informs actions. Still, I will concede that if THAT kind of "reality of being a Christian" does not exist (worded for your benefit). If that is the case, then ... it would be okay for you to say that you used to be one of "those" people. Just being objective, and logical ... Especially when claiming other things that you do know, like whether or not the Bible is the word of God? Saying it’s not the word of God is assuming that you would know the way in which God would choose to preserve his word. This also assumes that the councils, Church, Pope, etc. are all not appointed means of normative authority by God. A whole lot of assumptions. 8:56 This is one of many examples of you just saying how you “feel”. Why would how you feel matter in relation to whether something is right or not? This channel is literally you just documenting your belief change from a Christian to “agnostic/athiest/science theory believer/etc” while calling aspects of Christianity BS and false, while admitting you don’t really know anything, constantly contradicting yourself like you claim the Bible contradicts itself.
