Good to see you again, Scott. Man, you're 44, I'm 34, I must've first come across you when I was a bright eyed and bushy tailed 21. Time flies at an alarming rate! It's starting to feel weird to me, keeping up with various online personalities over long periods of time and seeing them and myself age. A surreal quality about it, an incongruence, like you should always be the young go to JFAQ adventuring in Japan guy and I should always be that kid on the fence about moving to Japan (maybe in the next life.). You being back in America is a good reminder to take life as it comes, never be too absolutist in our proclamations about our futures, what we envisage our lives to be and what life delivers can be at odds, even who we ourselves become. We'll be ok no matter what. Cheers from the UK.

Hey thanks all for all the time you’ve spent with me. Yeah it feels insane to have run a channel this long. I am going on 16 years. Looking through it all my mind is kinda blown. Being able to look back on yourself, your mindset and you takes are at times cringey, nostalgic and I weird sort of time capsule all at the same time. But the best is hearing from viewers like you who stuck with me through it all. It’s a huge honor

Hi Scott, as a former J-Vlogger, I really connect with your experiences. I returned to the USA from Japan 10 years ago with my family. I moved first, followed by my wife and daughter. Now, we're all preparing to return back to Japan next year. Our daughter Emily will graduate from university here in Los Angeles in May, and then move to Japan to live and work in Tokyo where she already has a job lined up. My wife Yumiko and I are retiring next year, and we’ve decided to spend our final chapter in Shizuoka where Yumiko’s family lives, and where we raised Emily. Your video resonated with me deeply, bringing back vivid memories of my own challenges resettling in the U.S. after over a decade in Japan (15 years total) raising our daughter from age three through middle school. I wish you and your son and family all the best on this incredible yet challenging and sometimes lonely journey. I truly understand. And it was definitely worth it from my perspective-the best decision we ever made, besides our original decision to move to Japan after Emily was born. Best wishes. -Kurt :-)

Hey this is me unrested on my other channel not just some random guy lol. Kurt I watched almost all your vids especially around the time your move happened. I remember what got my attention was you telling the slow acceptance your daughter had. How she started out not wanting to speak English but eventually found a friend group and came to enjoy life there. It gave me confidence to bring my youngest here and he is also doing fine. Keep vlogging and keeping it real. You’re an inspiration to all us jvloggers who have been doing this a long while.

As someone in academia... I would advise you strongly to pursue all other options. Enrollments are down nationally and AI is already posing challenges to most educational models. If you can setup a business that earns dollars in the US and live in Japan... might be a good option to consider.

Peeked at your channel to look for updates and was surprised to find this vid! Like many of the other commenters, I recall finding your channel years ago (roughly 10 years). At the time, I was living in China, and considering moving to Japan. Your videos helped me prepare for the move, and were entertaining. As a fellow Floridian, former ESL teacher in Asia, also in his forties, I can totally relate to your experiences returning to the US. Restarting at this age is rough, but the advantage is knowing exactly what you want and having the mindset to move forward (unlike in one's 20s, generally speaking). That you were able to leverage your teaching experiences abroad with your major is great. Wish you the best of luck going forward. If you're ever in the Miami area, and are looking to chat with a former expat, look me up.

Hi, Scott! It's so nice to have you back!! In college I was managing editor and proofreader of my campus' art and literature journal, and that included creating the layout of the journal before sending it to the publisher/printer. If you'd like I can send you the info of the program we used for the layout of the journal and reach out to the printer/publisher to see if they do out of state work (we used a local company in Minnesota, which is where I live and went to college, but I'd love to help out if I can!) Iirc the printer usually doesn't do huge print jobs but if you wanted a couple hundred it should be okay. Again if you see this just let me know and I'll get that information for you!

So glad to hear you're all good and that you're back in the States, it sounds like a super exciting change! Crazy how time flies and things change, I started watching you as a 14 year old kind, I'll be 28 in a little over a month now. I guess I do have some questions for you if you ever do a follow up answering questions about your life update. 1. How hard did reverse culture shock hit? I lived in China previously and I know for me, reverse culture shock coming back to my home country was always a harder adjustment, I can't fully explain why that is, but curious if you felt the same way or not. 2. How different is working in the American education system/being an educator in America vs being an educator in Japan? 3. After all this time does America still feel like home to you? Does it still have that comfortable homey feeling for you or has that gone away over time in favor of Japan feeling that way? 4. I know you mentioned a lot about Japan's recent struggles and tensions in Asia, so would you recommend people still consider moving to Japan if that's something they are considered or would you advise against it? 5. After your 15+ years living in Japan full time, are there any big life lessons that you think living there has taught you over time, if so what do you think they are? 6. Since coming back to the US, has your opinion of it changed at all? If so, in what ways? I'm so curious how being away for this long has changed the way you view it and what your overall opinion on it is now that you're back 7. Now that you're spending time in the US and can feel the differences between the US and Japan, what is one thing you wish Japan would learn from the US and what is one thing you wish the US could learn from Japan? It could be anything from a certain technology, a cultural aspect, anything really that you wish the other place could adopt or learn. 8. How do most people in Japan feel about the whole China situation? Do most people have a negative perception of China? Are they worried about a possible conflict over Taiwan or island chains? Are you personally worried about it? 9. Is the current plan to stay in the US until your son finished school and then make a decision about going back to Japan or not? I guess my question is is this move back to the US more of a "let's take this year by year and see how it goes" or a "this is the decision we've decided to make and we're committed to it" type of thing. 10. Are there any JVloggers out there that you still keep in touch with from time to time? 11. How do you feel about Chris Broad (Abroad in Japan)? As the JVlogg community started to slow down some I feel like he became the next big thing in the Japan KZbin scene so I'm curious if you're familiar and what your thoughts are. 12. What's one place in Japan that you think maybe lots of foreigners don't know about that you really like that you'd recommend people visit? I ask because I may be taking another trip to Japan next year and want to get away from the more obvious spots like Tokyo and Kyoto lol

its wild that you and another youtuber (Chika Alice) not only return after a lengthy absence and upload with hours of each other but return to the US. i can imagine the credit thing being a hassle, like what are you expected to do when your life is outside of the US? just buy random things to keep your score up? it must feel like starting from square one but it sounds like you have it mostly figured out with paying off the house already in your mind. if i were to move to japan id rent the home out so just in case i would move back at least i got that asset but you sound like you got it covered so keep going !

I use to play a bunch when I was in high school. Necromunda even more. I really really love the lore too.

@@unrested The books, video games, audio dramas, etc? It's pretty awesome. Although it sucks you have to get them from either America or Japan because they're insanely expensive. They're close to half the price in some European countries.

Welcome your update video. Wow, you really send your son(1 that is) to US for education like what you said in previous videos. I thought it would be many years later when your elder son is in his teens. Question part : Did you go back together with your 2nd son or he only came over after you are settled ?
