Although this song is quite enjoyable and relaxing, this song is laughable (within the context of the movie). Fletcher is critiquing the Studio Band for not meeting his absolute perfection, on difficult pieces like Whiplash and Caravan, but then turns around and plays this "starbucks jazz" and still tries to act like he's some sort of music guru. I loved the film, and I love this song, but this scene pissed me off more than I thought.

I think it was deliberate on their part. They wanted to show that Fletcher knew he himself was never capable of becoming a Charlie Parker. This scene gave me mixed feelings - it capture Fletcher's musical frustration as a person of mediocre talent unhappy with his lot in life still finding some serenity in music. It's a nice moment in the end because we get to see Fletcher get back in touch with what drew him into his career in the first place - a love of music.
