Some really fascinating interaction between Australia and America in the old days. Whiplash was directed by John Merdyth Lucas, son of the writer director Wilfrid Lucas. Wilfrid Lucas also came to Australia in the early movie days and brought with him John. K. Wells, who co-directed the original movie of The Man From Snowy River, in 1920. Tragically that movie is now lost, the reels destroyed on the advice of an insurance company, that considered them flammable. Unless Wells took a reel back to America with him it no longer exists. If anyone knows anything about John. K. Wells and where his body of work may be that would be fantastic.

I never heard of this show before (I'm 59, here in America). I'm watching Peter Graves on KZbin, on a show called The complete "Pioneers of Television" interview. That's what brought me here.

I barely remember watching this as a kid. I remember Peter Graves and that theme song, but don't remember much else. If I remember correctly, Whiplash and Gunsmoke were both on saturday night and I didn't know it then but each show starred brothers. That is, Peter Graves (of Whiplash) and James Arness of Gunsmoke were real life brothers.

Thanks for sharing this. However, this is not the episode called "Convict Town". It's the episode called "Solid Gold Brigade" (listed as episode #13 on IMDB and episode #17 on Wikipedia).

Do you ever answer your comment from viewers? I would really like to know why there are no openings on any Whiplash episodes? Is there an explanation? Paul

The quill pen that Peter Graves is using in the opening scene is uncut, he wouldn't be able to write with that. just saying.

Huh....the map Chris Cobb is looking at shows the Western Australian coastline heading towards Broome....he's riding a coach there (to Fury Ck) to pick up gold then coaching it back to Sydney?? What...aren't there any ships available? I guess as viewers we're not meant to have any geographical knowledge.

+Idio Synkracy Our world globe map in those days did not have that much detail and we didn't get our first set of Funk & Wagnall's encyclopedia until 1963.

Freeman Cobb (1830-1878) was an American, who established the Cobb and Co stage coach company in 1853 with partners John Murray Peck, James Scanlon and John B. Lamber. The company was based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and ran American-imported Concord coaches to and from the Victorian goldfields. Cobb returned to the United States after three and a half years but associates continued operating under the name Cobb & Company. He had introduced the use of Concord coaches to Australia and built a brand so strong the companies operated it until 1924.

A so-called British/Australian series, with all the available Australian or British actors, they had to push an American in, it's the same with every movie or TV series from the 'fifties 'til today, America has to dominate and portray their nationals as the heroes and demonstrate their national ego.

*WHIPLASH* No. of series1 No. of episodes34 Whiplash is a British/Australian television series produced by the Seven Network, ATV, and ITC Entertainment. Filmed in 1959-60, the series was first broadcast in September 1960 in the United Kingdom followed by Australia in February 1961. It starred Peter Graves. Writers included Gene Roddenberry and Harry Julian Fink. Set in the 1860s, the series is a Western filmed in Australia, and stars Peter Graves as Christopher Cobb. The series is inspired by the life of Freeman Cobb, founder of Australia's first stagecoach line, Cobb and Co. The real Freeman Cobb did not carry a pistol, nor did he use a stockwhip to settle disputes. The series stands out from other television Westerns of its era in using only Australian actors as guest stars, rather than character actors from American Westerns. The series was created by Michael Noonan and Michael Plant, and produced by Maury Geraghty and Ben Fox at the Artransas Studios (owned by ATV), Sydney Australia. Post-production was completed in the United Kingdom. Freeman Cobb (1830-1878) was an American, who established the Cobb and Co stagecoach company in 1853 with partners John Murray Peck, James Scanlon and John B. Lamber. The company was based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and ran American-imported Concord coaches to and from the Victorian goldfields.
