Listen to what the tone conveys- Fletcher wanted to find the best, tried his damnedest, the only way he knew how, but he lost it, the same way Neiman felt he lost his dream by that point in the film. It's a song about being crestfallen, and paying service to the thing you thought you could have, gave everything you had to try to make it, but never can again, a sentiment both Fletcher and Neiman share, Fletcher for losing his job and his band, and Neiman for being expelled out of Shaffer and losing his part in Studio Band.

This was a masterful scene. After seeing the violent, abusive side of fletcher, this song tricks neeman into thinking he had a vulnerable side all along. This is what victims do, no matter how awful their abuser treats them, all they need is a sign of vulnerability to come right back.

I feel that this song is like an own version of Caravan (i find a little similitude in both, anyway i'm not musician so i don't know if I'm right). If it is so, then it makes so much sense with the movie, as in this part Fletcher has lost his job and Andrew left the school, so the whole environment becomes more melancholic, just as this song.
