No movie has made me feel as anxious, tense, exhilarated, or as terrified as Whiplash did. Breathtaking performances from both Simmons and Teller that genuinely had me on the edge of my seat for a good part of the movie. If you're on the fence about seeing this movie, don't use the comments here as a way to make a decision. Just watch it for yourself and you'll understand what I mean when I say it was the best movie of 2014. One thing I hate though, is how the trailer basically spoils two of the most intense moments of the entire movie. *Ugh.*

If you would care to let me know the time into the movie it is, I would really like to see it. Of course, he is not in every "shot", but I was quite sure he was either in the room, or looking into a room that made up every setting/scene. At any rate, I think it was quite rare and challenging for someone to have written a movie script that was essentially first person (Birdman comes to mind also). So, good catch, Rashi... @@curtiselder6644 Yes, the scene exists, BUT.... it is only a short "camera drive across the waiting scenery" which is, so I think, not ment to show different perspectives, but to underline the lengthy duration of the challenging torment the drummers have to endure. There are limited ways to portray the passing of time, so I would still consider this "first person", because the scene only exists to demonstrate what the protagonist goes through.

Some people (particularly jazz musicians) say they hate the movie because it portrays jazz instructors as very rude people, and it makes it look like all jazz instructors are horrible. While I do see where they're coming from, I strongly disagree. The movie is supposed to be a psychological thriller with two characters with very opposing ways of achieving the exact same goal. They just chose to have these characters be Jazz musicians just as a vehicle for the plot. It's not really a film about Jazz and the appreciation of it. There are hints of it, but it's not the main focus. Even if it was that kind of film, they aren't saying all jazz instructors are like this. They're just trying to make a very interesting and wild character (JK Simmons). Just because one movie shows an instructor that abused his students, doesn't mean all instructors are like that. Sorry for the long paragraphs, but I just wanted state my opinion. I love this film so much.

+D0nutLord In reality though and just as a general statement, people are only allowed to treat you this way if you let them. We all must always remember to stand up for ourselves and say how we want to be treated. We must not let the fear of failing eat away at us inside because that's how we lose ourselves as people. I know this is just a movie, but I've seen a lot of people through my young life so far, myself included who have felt this way because they weren't perfect at whatever they were working on. Remember to always just do the best you can and if others can't accept that then that's their issue, not yours.

BUT teachers, it's very difficult, there are people who can't study like that, and there are people who can only do that. I learned something only from such people, one of them is my father, he is a kind man and a caring father until it comes to studying, he even broke my arm because I did not perform the exercise correctly (not on purpose). It also has a great screenplay, with great direction and great performances, with the best being JK Simmons. He absolutely steals the show everytime he's on screen. In the end, JK Simmons finally smirks because he found his ways have worked. He made a genius out of a mediocre student. All the time, no one was trying to understand his way, his teachings, but finally miles did. He went out of his way and became the student he always wanted to be

Best camera shots I've ever seen. And it cannot be described how good the plot is. The title is so appropriate, because it describes what Fletcher is doing to Andrew over and over again, creating a pattern. It's really amazing if you catch on. And that ending was completely unexpected, spectacular. One of my favourite movies.

This movie was amazing and so exhilarating. One unanswered question I have is: who the hell took the music folder when he lost it at the competition? Seriously it was one foot behind him and he had his back turned for a total of maybe 5 seconds and you see nobody walk behind him so who took it? Still an awesome movie but I think they could've done that scene a little better where they show him misplace it or a janitor throw it away
@metalliholic10 жыл бұрын
It's possible that he lost it on purpose to get the spot. Since he was asking all crazy obsessed about it
@Lewis---10 жыл бұрын
I'd say that Fletcher took it. He said a little earlier in the movie that there would be trouble if he saw another one of those folders lying around, so I reckon he took it to make a point - basically to force the owner of it to admit to him that they lost their folder so he could scold them for the mistake. When Neeman says that he has memorised the scores then Fletcher decides to try him out as core because he respected the fact that he was so committed that he had memorised the song. At least that's the way I interpreted it. I doubt a janitor would have trashed something like that, and Neeman seemed genuinely surprised and upset that he had lost it so I don't think it was him either.

khyoon14 No, it's not arbitrary (incorrect use of the word by the way, moron). The right answer is Fletcher. There is literally no one else it could have been. Not everything in movies has to be spoonfed to you. It's a matter of deductive reasoning.

Why i love this movie 1. Great Writing and Directing by Damien Chazelle 2. Great performances by Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons 3. Great music by Justin Hurwitz 4. DONT WATCH the trailer - if you HAVE NOT SEEN the MOVIE YET This trailer does not do the actual movie justice, they censored J.H. Simmons anger speech (which was a nut-punch, just from the audio aspect) and they cheapened all the highlights, I am happy I never saw the trailer before watching, because all that hard work and perfect timing leading up to everyone of those scenes would have been wasted if I saw them in this quick montage before watching the full movie.
