Tony Ke Totally Understand point, School of rock, or Mr. Hollands opus is along those lines. Great stories, but this one isn't about relationships as much as it is about the celebration of an art form. nothing worth doing is easy.

No movie has made me feel as anxious, tense, exhilarated, or as terrified as Whiplash did. Breathtaking performances from both Simmons and Teller that genuinely had me on the edge of my seat for a good part of the movie. If you're on the fence about seeing this movie, don't use the comments here as a way to make a decision. Just watch it for yourself and you'll understand what I mean when I say it was the best movie of 2014. One thing I hate though, is how the trailer basically spoils two of the most intense moments of the entire movie. *Ugh.*

Few people realize that this film is one of a very few that is shot in first person. There isn’t a single scene that Miles Teller is out of the room. All shots of his family, girlfriend, practice sessions, etc., are in the room with Miles. Extraordinary.

@@rashianand7534 Oh my! I'm sure you are right, but I'm not finding it yet... there are many torture scenes to sift through! If you would care to let me know the time into the movie it is, I would really like to see it. Of course, he is not in every "shot", but I was quite sure he was either in the room, or looking into a room that made up every setting/scene. At any rate, I think it was quite rare and challenging for someone to have written a movie script that was essentially first person (Birdman comes to mind also). So, good catch, Rashi... I'm a tad embarrassed at my inaccuracy. I'll be sitting over in the corner next to Baby (Dirty Dancing), licking my wounds. Haha.

@@curtiselder6644 Yes, the scene exists, BUT.... it is only a short "camera drive across the waiting scenery" which is, so I think, not ment to show different perspectives, but to underline the lengthy duration of the challenging torment the drummers have to endure. There are limited ways to portray the passing of time, so I would still consider this "first person", because the scene only exists to demonstrate what the protagonist goes through.

Some people (particularly jazz musicians) say they hate the movie because it portrays jazz instructors as very rude people, and it makes it look like all jazz instructors are horrible. While I do see where they're coming from, I strongly disagree. The movie is supposed to be a psychological thriller with two characters with very opposing ways of achieving the exact same goal. They just chose to have these characters be Jazz musicians just as a vehicle for the plot. It's not really a film about Jazz and the appreciation of it. There are hints of it, but it's not the main focus. Even if it was that kind of film, they aren't saying all jazz instructors are like this. They're just trying to make a very interesting and wild character (JK Simmons). Just because one movie shows an instructor that abused his students, doesn't mean all instructors are like that. Sorry for the long paragraphs, but I just wanted state my opinion. I love this film so much.

+D0nutLord In reality though and just as a general statement, people are only allowed to treat you this way if you let them. We all must always remember to stand up for ourselves and say how we want to be treated. We must not let the fear of failing eat away at us inside because that's how we lose ourselves as people. I know this is just a movie, but I've seen a lot of people through my young life so far, myself included who have felt this way because they weren't perfect at whatever they were working on. Remember to always just do the best you can and if others can't accept that then that's their issue, not yours.

Kirsten Noe Now that is very true, but I feel like Miles Teller's character wanted to just be the best drummer. And, the reason why Miles didn't walk out is because he knows the teacher wants to make him great.

There is a difference between teachers and just a parasite. Working for such a terrible and hardly useful. BUT teachers, it's very difficult, there are people who can't study like that, and there are people who can only do that. I learned something only from such people, one of them is my father, he is a kind man and a caring father until it comes to studying, he even broke my arm because I did not perform the exercise correctly (not on purpose). This movie really hooked me, because it's not just an arrogant old man, he's really good.

I absolutely love this movie. It's one of my favourite movies of all time. I relate so much to the main character Miles in this movie. I completely identify with his struggles to pursue his dreams and never giving up despite the obstacles he had to face such as Terrence constantly verbally abusing him and telling him he's terrible at what he does. It also has a great screenplay, with great direction and great performances, with the best being JK Simmons. He absolutely steals the show everytime he's on screen. I give this a 10/10 and if you haven't seen this yet, I recommend that you watch it as it really is an amazing film.

Ok. I've loved Miles' acting talent from Footloose (2011) to The Spectacular Now. But this movie, this is his BIG ONE. Amazing drumming talent alongside superb acting, the Academy better take a look at Miles and know that he deserves a nomination. J.K. Simmons, oh lord. From J. Jonah. Jameson at the Daily Bugle, to Cave Johnson in Portal 2, I love this guy. As soon as he blew up at Miles during the rehearsal scene, I was instantly mesmerized. Stunning and leaves me in awe. I haven't even scene this movie yet, but I know its gonna soar. I'm telling you guys, Oscars: 2015, we could see "Whiplash" announced in numerous categories...

This movie was amazing and so exhilarating. One unanswered question I have is: who the hell took the music folder when he lost it at the competition? Seriously it was one foot behind him and he had his back turned for a total of maybe 5 seconds and you see nobody walk behind him so who took it? Still an awesome movie but I think they could've done that scene a little better where they show him misplace it or a janitor throw it away

I'd say that Fletcher took it. He said a little earlier in the movie that there would be trouble if he saw another one of those folders lying around, so I reckon he took it to make a point - basically to force the owner of it to admit to him that they lost their folder so he could scold them for the mistake. When Neeman says that he has memorised the scores then Fletcher decides to try him out as core because he respected the fact that he was so committed that he had memorised the song. At least that's the way I interpreted it. I doubt a janitor would have trashed something like that, and Neeman seemed genuinely surprised and upset that he had lost it so I don't think it was him either.

One of the best movie I've seen this year, terrific performance from both leads, even though I could see the ending coming from miles away (see what I did there?). The execution was stellar, and the final scene put a smile on everybody's face in the theater.
