This is how i fixed the leak on my on my whirlpool ed5vhexvboo refrigerator. When the water filter was removed and replaced and started leaking. This should work for most water filters that have quick releases ad develop a leak. Don't be duped into buying parts you don't need.

You rock !!!, I found a small piece of plastic blocking the inlet valve, water was gushing out when I tried to take out the filter, and it was dripping slowly with the filter in, so every 2-3 days water will come out from under the fridge. Your Video saved my $47.GBY

Thank you for this video and other's comments....all very helpful. The flow in for the water was going very slow. Changed the filter and water valve and that did not work. We just replaced the water filter housing ($43 from Amazon) and BAM...solved the problem.

I wanted to say thank you for posting this vid, helped me a lot diagnosing a slow fill on my Kenmore Elite fridge. First you check the normal things: Filter, line kinks, saddle valve, clogged filter..... All of those were fine. I did replace my water inlet valve and it turned out that was fine also. It turned out to be an old faulty "water housing unit". As soon as I replaced this water came back from a "trickle" to full force. I found it easier when replacing the lines to disconnect from the rear "water supply line" & "line going from water inlet valve", then I was able to pull the entire water filter housing out. My hands are too big to fit under the fridge to go a quick release with one hand and then pull the water line with the other hand. It was kind of tough to do from the front of the fridge, easier out the back. Took 20 mins. Thanks Once Again.

I used the above method to replace the filter housing to fix slow fill symptom and grinding noise. This is the third time I've done this. The last unit only lasted five months. After replacing the unit I saw this video and thought maybe I could fix the old one for reuse in the future. I easily removed the gray plastic collars but the white rings beneath were very difficult to remove, maybe glued in ? I managed to remove the small one but with some damage and the large one I pretty much destroyed trying to remove it. Since the new one is an OEM part maybe I'll be able to repair it if necessary. One can only hope!

Thanks. Last piece pulled (nipple) was cracked. Feel good knowing I need to buy a part rather than wondering if it could have been repaired.

Had the same experience--nipple valves were cracked. Cheap plastic part worth probably 25 cents each. Only problem nobody carries them--had to bite the bullet and buy the housing.

Just experienced this problem and the video left out one very important thing. When you look inside the housing and you see the two ports, you will also notice a small round thing inside. When the housing is removed you can carefully remove the complete rear piece from the housing. Once removed you will see this round piece I mentioned with a small button that can be depressed. If you carefully remove the cap, inside is a nipple with 2 small rubber o-rings and a spring. Those o-rings also can go bad causing the housing unit to drip from the bottom. If you see dripping from the underside of the housing this is 99% of the cause NOT the 2 valves mentioned in this video.

I just happen to notice this detailed video of a filter housing disassembly, repair, and reassembly. The price of a housing is now around or over $100 or as much as $134. While the steps appear simple, one little part could be found broken or may break in the repair process. Once one piece breaks, one is stuck with having to buy the housing. O-rings and shark bite connectors are readily available as replacement parts, but the plastic spring retainer is not. if the connections become calcified, they need to be cleaned as they may force the housing walls to break. It may be easiest to bite the bullet and pay the $100 for the housing. I hate doing this, but I have to to avoid leaks on a wooden floor and a finished basement. The wood/tile flooring under the fridge should be painted with a thick layer of paint or an extra layer of vinyl tile to prevent water from messing up a finished basement ceiling during the on going repair saga.

Unfortunately when you try and remove the circles with the flathead screwdriver those pieces won't snap back in---- don't do this step y'all. Those pieces just pop off when pressure hits them ruining the housing

Already replaced the O ring but still leaks a little. Did not know that there are more parts sitting behind the O ring. I will check it out but if it still leaks then I might just bypass the whole thing and split the line from my reverse osmosis system. Thanks.

The water line retaining ring broke on the filter housing when I tried this. I think a safer method would be to just put the whole bottom end of the filter housing in a citric acid and water or vinegar and water solution to decalcify it. That way you won't break any of the parts.

What you're saying will not work in most cases because there's usually a piece of trash inside that area it was pumped from the water plant and in my case it was a real fine almost look like a piece of thick brush about 1/4 inch long

I always appreciate people like yourself making these types of informative videos. Thanks! I have this type of refrigerator and want to bypass the filter, since I have an all house filtration system and my model of filter has gotten increasingly hard to find and very expensive. So, I am taking a guess that if I remove the water lines to the filter housing and splice them together with some barbed fittings and clamps, that would effectively bypass the filter. Do you agree? Again thanks for the info!

I have a Whirlpool side-by-side with this same system and I didn't have to splice these together...I just removed the filter and it bypassed this unit completely without leaking. Try it and see.

I followed these instructions to the tee. The retaining clip is super glued in. When it breaks, you will have to reglue it in. Don't waste your time, just buy a new housing.

Part that broke on mine was the cylinder attached to the plug valve on the raw water side and caused the flow rate filtered to be very slow. I disassembled it as described but the white plastic pieces are glued in and the screw driver prying it out at 3:00 actually breaks it. Do this to find out why things don't work but expect to buy a new one anyways.

Hello. I have the same fridge as the white one you have and my filter is new but water is not going into the filter. So it’s not filtering. The water dispenser comes out with or without the filter. But when I insert the filter it’s not filtering. I removed the filter and no water what so ever drips from the filter. It feels just as light as when I had bought it.

I have this exact problem. A new filter does not filter. I bought a second, different brand of filter and have the same result. The filter is not being recognized as inserted in the housing and is being bypassed, this is possible with this frig. I assume there is a switch that is not sensing the filter. Is it in the housing or somewhere else in the frig? I do not know which. Israel have you found the cause and solution for the problem?

Some people like to spend money. Go for it. Please recycle. I am not suggesting that anyone should or should not fix their own appliance, people should make their own risk assessments. I am simply sharing what worked for me. For people who feel confident enough in their own ability to not break a small piece of plastic or misalign a couple of o-rings while cleaning them, this is an exceptionally simple fix. If you do happen to botch it, it should be apparent, the second you break it or turn the water back on, at which time, you are right back to where you started. Worst case, it leaks later, which is arguably just as likely if you replace the entire housing and don't quite get the connections seated right or the part from the mfg is not quite right since it is new on old. It has now been almost 6 years, I have moved them twice and have had no subsequent problems with either. I have replaced several filters and use the water constantly for a family of 5. That would have been ~$100-$150 dumped in the recycling bin for me, for no real reason, other than the conventional "wisdom" usually reserved for department store appliance salesmen.
