Whirlpool WSSR Resource Saver Washing Machine

This is a full cycle video of of Whirlpool WSSR (Water Saving Spray RInse) Resource Saver washing machine. This particular machine was built in 1996. Instead of doing a deep rinse like most standard agitator washers, it does a series of 6 spray rinses that recirculates approximately 1 gallon of water of over the load for about 30 seconds before draining it away.

I’m surprised that they did not attempt to implement this into the Catalyst machines. It has all of the same components needed, yet was not utilized in this way. They could have added an eco cycle so that it would behave just like this, while having all the other options and cycles for a deep rinse too.

That color agitator was for the KitchenAid version. Whirlpool always used white agitators. Nice machine though.

This particular Whirlpool washer paved the way for the Whirlpool Catalyst (which they kept the rubber seal and the recirculation sprayer, they changed the location of the fill sprayer to the side of the basket and added a bleach, fabric softener, and detergent dispenser with water dilution) in 2000 and then the Calypso in 2004.

Yessir, it does a series of spray rinses to substitute having to refill the tub again to save energy. Idk how much better it really is but these are very rare.

If I'm not mistaken I do believe there is the option for a deep cycle rinse but the spray rinse is the main attraction in this machine

this is like an older version of the 2015 speed queen's normal/eco cycle except this washer does neutral drains instead of spin drains like the 2015 speed queen does

I noticed the neutral drain latch released right away. Was this intentional for this vid or is the mechanism just worn? Anyway it's fun to see a DD do a spin drain. Thanks for posting this very unique machine.

My guess is the transmission was still too cool (oil is thicker) and the latch was not able to grab correctly. That sometimes can happen if high speed is not used at first.

no (unless you put it on rinse & spin and pour in softener) because if this machine has a softener dispenser cup in the agitator, it would end the cycle with it pouring out of the agitator and possible staining the load again

Hays Coleman That is not the right cap for that agitator it does have a fabric softener dispenser it’s just not on this unit must’ve been lost.

that's unusual when on gentle cycle, gently spin shifts to high speed spin

but the reason it went to high speed spin is because the neutral drain mechanism let go of the big gear in the transmission most likely due to the oil not being thick enough to engage the mechanism since the agitation speed was slow

Did you replace the agitator with a Kitchen Aid one?

Yes he did, you can only install those on whirlpools and use it on the gentle cycle because the frame of the bottom is larger than the whirlpool agitators and can damage the machine if a kitchenaid wise based agitator is used inside a whirlpool machine on the fast agitation setting, as long as it’s on low it’s fine.

I dont know why Wirlpool made that "double action" agitator if water doesn´t get to the top of that stupid "double action" agitator

First of all, it's *dual action*, and it's not stupid, the purpose of the two piece agitator is to help bring the clothes down to the bottom agitator, and then push them back up to the top. It's called a rollover, and it's very effective in cleaning.

I get what you’re saying the design does seem silly because the top fins never hit the water so when they were designing the agitator I don’t understand why they just didn’t design them lower and not bother putting in any of the top ones because they don’t do anything at all.

I know this is an old comment, but the fins outside the water were there to initially push down any dry clothes that didn’t get soaked down during the fill, otherwise they’d float and take forever to get pulled down the way a single piece agitator used to do.

If you read the description, you'll know why it doesn't do that. It's completely intentional.

Swing and a miss! LOL That actually is very smart. . . I wonder why this wasn't implemented across the board. You still get the full wash but not wasting a whole tub just for a rinse. Now with the ECM motors the electric usage would be negligible plus there is no agitator cycle plus the spin. . . its just spin. Good thinking.
