Whirlwind & Sea King at 22 Sqn Ceremony RAF Valley

Flying helicopters on the closing ceremony for 22 Sqn Search & Rescue at RAF Valley by the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge.
Private owned Whirlwind HAR.10 restored to original condition, along with a Sea King HAR.3 doing a short display on the closing ceremony.

Ah fond memories, as a young J/T Comm Tech at RAF Leuchars in the early 80's I used to volunteer and fly regularly with 22Sqdn on Wessex's doing things like ditching drills in the North Sea with the RNLI and cliff rescue drills with the Coastguard, on one occassion because I would volunteer in all weathers I was given the priveliged left hand seat position in the cockpit and I can tell you climbing up with the rotors turning was an interesting scenario, I was often found sat on a dingy pack next to the winchman with the main door open watching the world go by but on one occassion we had a near miss with a Phantom a/c and our pilot cranked us hard over to starboard to avoid a collision consequently the winchman and I were left dangling in the doorway only supported by our "donkey harness's" which incidentally is a leather belt strap with two rings and a pin through it !. Oh Happy Days.

Usually pilot and co-pilot except for maintenance test flights, then usually with a technician in the left hand seat.

It was a RESCUE helicopter and it rescue many people for many,meny years that needed help. I'm sure they wasn't worry if it was ugly or not.
