I forgot to say in the intro, I show how I fix a mistake that caused major gaps in some of the dovetails in this video. I need more practice with the dovetail jig!

Their are nice boxes simple gifts for any time of the year. I would say they are a great way to get rid of offcuts you could have a mix of woods.

Yes this blind man can’t see the mistakes. But a great idea. Maybe it be quite good to use for spaghetti after. Oh and the bonus the sawdust will go all over someone’s carpet to so that be a bit of a laugh. They’re definitely love you for that. Hope you and your family have a very very Merry Christmas and thank you for all the lovely videos you’ve done. You kept me sane listening to you and actually the spice of learnt loads as well so thanks Merry Christmas

Look up cabinet makers triangle, you take say the two long sides put them face to face draw a triangle on the edge you end up with two half triangles on both pieces and same on short bits once you get used of using it it make life a lot easier. At a glance you can see straight away which way your boards should be. Number/letters are ok but you spend more time looking for the number/letter where with the triangle you see straight away which way the pieces should be. Oh by the way great channel

Great vid. I feared for your other thumb when your paring towards it with your chisel whilst you’re doing the sawdust and glue clean up. My Dad always said both hands behind the blade. This would make a great hand plane box. Going to have a go as I’ve been meaning to make a few plane boxes. Not got a table saw or router jig so it’ll not be as fancy but good inspiration 👍👍👍👍👍

John 2 questions: How long did this take to do these 4 boxes and what would you sell them for if sold retail price online compared to your final workbench cost? What is a rule of thumb for wholesale cost to retailer of a whisky business and an experienced woodworker like yourself doing this exact same product? Currently got asked to do such a project for the same design and hardwood material versions and need some guidance after showing the client a mock 3/8” plywood version with buttjoints, pins and glue joinery that I did and quoted but they wanted the other side of this spectrum too? Any info would be helpful.

Absolutely brilliant - great skill, excellent presentation and a wonderful gift. Two question where do you source your wood - cherry and walnut and secondly how do you keep your hand tools from rusting during damp winter months. many thanks for your great videos. Denis
@JohnMcGrathManInShed2 жыл бұрын
Hi Denis I get my hard woods from McMahons and its an on going battle to keep my hand tools rust free, one product I really like is protec tool wax, works great.

Great job on the repair John! Curious why you planed down the thickness instead of resawing them.
@JohnMcGrathManInShed3 жыл бұрын
I was only taking about 8mm of the boards and by the time you flatten out rough sawn boards you lose about that anyway

Great job! I've made a dovetail box recently out of pine, would it be okay to finish with Danish oil and is there an equivalent of that polish available in woodies?
@JohnMcGrathManInShed3 жыл бұрын
Yeah Danish oil is perfect, you can get some bees wax in Woodies but its not nearly as nice
@MrSongwriter23 жыл бұрын
I really rate liberon finishing oil. I did an electric guitar body with it and if you make a French polish style rubber and apply like that and build up the layers you get a great finish

When your shooting a chamfer on by hand , chamfer the end grain first and angle the plane away from the piece instead of going straight across , that way you won't get tear out, if you do that will be cleaned up when you shoot the chamfer with the grain.
@spec34433 жыл бұрын
Your planer is not set up right that is why you are getting tear out, you can hear it it sounds really bad

Fine woodworking dovetails, you need a "Woodrat" Big learning curve and deep pockets needed but worth it.
