What a great interview! I know NOTHING about whiskey, but have seen lots of interviews with Sam about Outlander. It was so great to hear him converse about something where he didn’t have to worry about spoilers and answer silly questions about his personal life. It seemed to be the most natural interview I’ve ever seen him do. You can tell this is a passion for him - and the interviewer was great! Not fawning on the popularity of Sam, but just talking to him like another guy with a common love. Well done!

My father was born in 1920 in Aberdeen, Scotland. His family moved to America when he was 4. His cousin who lived in Sherwood Forest, England would come visit my dad once every 10 years. I remember my Dad was so excited this one time he visited because he brought my Dad a gift. It was Ian MacLeod’s ‘As We Get It’, Scotch Whisky. It is 119 proof! No two bottles are the same because they don’t filter the Whisky, it comes straight from the Cask. My Dad and his cousin were both so excited about drinking the Whisky. My Dad was going through Chemo therapy and was on a strict diet and probably was not supposed to have alcohol. But he could not resist, he had several shots and enjoyed the Whisky throughly and reminiscing with his cousin. I discovered Outlander in 2020 and binged watch all five seasons in one month. Unbelievable acting by Caitriona and Sam!

Aye aye @KristopherHart As a whisky loving Scottish Highlander I really enjoyed your interview with the legend that is Sam Heughan. Like Sam (and many other 'migratory' Scots, before and since) I spent a large chunk of my 20s living, studying and working in London. That was the early 70s and I'd not had much experience of whisky when I left my Aberdeenshire home aged 18! This was despite the fact that the farm I lived on shared a boundary with the Oldmeldrum Distillery, which is now The Glen Garioch (pronounced Glen Geerie) and uses the water supply from our farm - The Silent Spring of Coutens!! I digress. I also became the token Scot in my Londoner friend group and whenever we went to the pub I would order a malt - straight, completely unadulterated (nowadays I might add 3 drops of uisge to my uisge-beatha). This was initially for bravado and a sense of otherness, being a Scot surrounded by Sassenachs who for the most part had never been north of Watford Gap. (Its just outside North London!) The bravado turned to a genuine appreciation of the wonders of Scottish Single Malts. How lucky am I to be able to browse supermarket shelves and see so many options in front of me? You are clearly an aficionado and have loved spending time in Scotland as well. I couldn't help noticing that you haven't mastered the voiceless velar fricative of our language (the guttural ch sound like clearing the back of your throat when a midgie flies in!). It would make your presentation so much more authentic.... Sam could help you with that - In Scots his name is Heu-ch-an, not Heu-an. I think he says it that way to humour the American audience! BTW Bruichladdich is not pronounced "Brook - Laddie" Its from the Gàidhlig ... Bruthach a' Chladaich Check out this sound clip which gives the pronunciation of the original Gàidhlig place name... Go on. Give it a go. You'll really impress the Scots natives. Maybe check out Scottish Gaelic on Duolingo while you're at it!! learngaelic.scot/dictionary/index.jsp?abairt=Bruichladdich%20&slang=both&wholeword=false

Just one other thing, please, please do an armagnac. In 1985 I was traveling in Europe with my husband, and we were looking for an old, unknown to tourist guides place to buy an exception bottle of brandy to take along. We stumbled onto a dusty store, with a 1944 Chateau Le Tour in the window. An ancient little frenchman who looked like Yoda with a beret came out, and he and my husband (who had run the wine cellar at a four start restaurant in NYV) got into an hour discussion of wines, brandies. We walked out with a 1961 armagnac. Outstanding.

Well, I wish you every success, and to you people out there who can't get their paws at a bottle of Sam's whisky, I recommend the Loch Lomond Signature...also a blend, very easy to drink and not too dear to buy.
