** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

On Saturday we had a party of 30 come into the restaurant I work at, and almost all of them got drinks so I had to make about a million margaritas and mai tais. And then, at the end of the ticket, right as I was losing my faith in humanity, I saw that one gentleman just wanted Laphroaig 10, our only Islay. I was so grateful for this man that I poured him doubles all night, and he ordered three more. At the end of the night as they were all leaving the restaurant, he came over to the bar and bought me a Laphroaig 10, and left a generous tip. So essentially not only did I mooch a whiskey, but I was paid to do so. I never learned that gentleman's name, but he was a magnificent bastard in my eyes. (PS - it was my first taste of an Islay and I was surprised by how much I loved it. Must now try them all.)

Yes, what a beautiful end to your hard day! That gentleman who ordered the Laphroaig 10 was sent but the whisky gods to initiate your assimilation. This how the celestial whisky vortex works......you never know how, when, or where you shall be sucked in. Just sit back, marvel at your luck, and enjoy the ride!

The whisky gods are indeed smiling on me this week, I have since mooched 3 more Islays and am in love with them all. I feel like I've found what I was missing in all the friendlier whiskys! They've been a little boring to me lately. That gentleman was a true godsend. The celestial whisky vortex is my home now.

I owe you guys a huge thanks. When I first found you a year ago, I was looking for the best bottom shelf whiskey I could find. But over the course of the past year, I've learned that spending a little more on a good whiskey helps me to slow down and appreciate it. Now I'm drinking less, enjoying it more, and I'm even saving money in the long run! Keep up the good work, you magnificent bastards!

You guys need to come to Canada...for nothing else other than learning what maple is. Molasses is the byproduct of turning brown sugar into white sugar, nothing like maple. Treacle, as far as I can tell, is just a British term for molasses...sort of a biscuit/cookie situation happening there...
@ericschwab409
@ericschwab409 6 жыл бұрын
aKillerSandwich Treacle is indeed molasses and comes in a lighter version called “golden syrup” and a darker version called “dark treacle” or just treacle. Dark treacle is what Americans would call blackstrap molasses. Nice and sugary, but not my favorite. Give me real maple syrup or a nice raw wildflower honey instead. 👍

Love the videos guys, I've been watching for a while now but only recently subscribed. As a point of reference red cedar, which thrives here in East Tennessee, smells a lot like juniper berries (it is a kind of juniper actually) without the sweetness you get from the berries. It's also the wood they use to line hope chests, wardrobes, and the like to keep moths and mold out if you've ever smelled that herbal woodsy smell you get inside some furniture.

Just bought a bottle of Gibsons 12 year today actually, and liked it. Out of the 4 I have tried so far Forty creek is by far the smoothest, and I would say maybe the tastiest. But I really like this Gibsons. I will buy another bottle of this before another. I want to try and stick with one or two whisky brands and enjoy them over the course of this year. Hey Guys, Great episode. I'm fairly new to whiskey and have really been enjoying your channel. I really liked the metaphor at the end on how to try and pick up more of the flavors as in the past my brain has usually just said, "I like this, this is good," or "not a fan," without really understanding why. Usually my brain will paint a picture rather than pick up on individual flavor notes. For example I tried Talisker Storm last Christmas and remember it made me think of a lonely weather beaten shack on a Scottish cliff by the sea with pounding surf. Any other advice on how to refine the palate more?
@WhiskeyVault
@WhiskeyVault 6 жыл бұрын
Just keep heading down that path! Listen to your instincts. The next step after "scottish shack" is to start to pick out things you would be smelling while standing there. Salt water, old wood, moss, green grass. Those become the actual tasting notes.

Jason Spillane I cut my Scotch teeth on Glenfiddich. Glenfiddich is the top selling single malt I believe. It’s a little light for some people (boring even), but a lot of people who don’t like heavier flavored scotches love Glenfiddich. The 18 YO is very good. I think Glenfiddich is a decent whisky for the money and I keep a couple of bottles in my collection at all times (for everyday use and emergencies and such). I guess there’s a 14 year Glenfiddich now that is intended to suit the taste of the American market. I’ve not tried it yet. I’m happy with the 12 YO and 18YO. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYqlXp-MgJWJmac

I've been introduced to things like Talisker 10, Lagavulin 16 and ... Hope to be as experienced as you two one day. Thanks so much!

Unrelated to the episode. I have a question about a previous episode where they were talking about American peat and it's use in whiskey. I did a quick search & found Minnesota has a hand in peat tech. Which I thought was cool. But, I was looking specifically for whiskeys using American peat. Are there any? I found Westland peated and Kings County, but I don't believe they are using peat in the process, but using previously used peated whiskey barrels.

Not sure on this one yet, but I know Westland is starting to harvest their own peat in the NorthWest!

Whiskey Vault I looked up Westland's Peated again and it says they are using a peated malt, but not where it's sourced from. The Kings County site says they have a hint of peat sourced from England & Scotland. I'm back to the drawing board.

Crown is now offering a bourbon, thoughts on that?!? Not on the taste but that they are getting into bourbon. I am yet to find some but plan to try it once my local store has some.

Jensen MacDonald I don't particularly approve of the title or the tone of the attached article but it has some interesting things to say about crown royals bourbon mash. As a side note, I bought it and I don't think I will ever drink it again. It tastes like someone took all of their leftover sugary candy and threw it in a barrel to liquify. It was weird. Every drink was like cotton candy, Mike & Ike's, or something like that. I was left confused by the experience. thewhiskeywash.com/whiskey-styles/canadian-whiskey/crown-royal-bourbon-mash-canadian-whiskey-wrong-merica/

Google had an article about 2 different Macallan 60 year old bots going to auctions this week expect high 400,00 to 500, 000 dollar mark each because of label art. One artist who did Beatles album covers and an another cartoonist.

As a disgruntled canadian, at this point my opinion on approaching canadian booze as a whole is 'dont', there is good stuff but sorting the wheat from the chaff is fucking tedious and there is so much subspar beer, whiskey, and wine that its not worth it unless you enjoy putting on your explorers cap and pissing away money looking for the next nugget of quality in the sea of shit. Especially with how establishments like the SAQ and the LCBO aggressively shove, and mostly stock the small brewery/distillery/vineyard stuff because of the tax incentives, and the major large brands because they are safe.

Love the show! My dad doesn't regularly drink liquor of any kind, but he wanted to try the bottle my sister got me from the Blair Athol distillery, so I had him sample Deanston 12 and then we jumped over to Ardbeg 10 for a completely different taste. He seemed to enjoy all of them, but really loved Blair Athol. Have you tried Blair Athol? And if so, do you know of a single malt available in the U.S. that has a similar taste profile to the Blair Athol 12?

Tom Bricker I’ve not had Atholl, but I’ve read that some spirits from the Blair Atholl distillery are used as a constituent Scotch in Bell’s blended Scotch along with Caol Isla and three or four other whiskies. Bell’s isn’t known for outstanding taste and is a budget whisky. However, I’m assuming that the 12 YO Atholl you had might be much better than the spirit they produce for Bell’s. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eIrdaaSblMaZf6c
