While in the Corps, I quit drinking for a year. I wanted to see if I could. Every time I would say, "No thanks, I don't drink", they would assume you were a recovering alcoholic and apologize for offering. They would look so confused when I would tell them why.

Here in Germany as well. If you don't want to drink, you better have an excuse like being the driver for the night. Otherwise you have to say no on and on again. My friends are different, but I'm from a pretty nerdy background with lot's of people more into gathering to game and discuss IT, beer whisky and such; than into partying. And I'm saying this as someone who drinks at gatherings all the time. The first time I had to celebrate my uncles birthday with him, I drank a complete bottle of Jägermeister among other things because I just wasn't prepared for the peer pressure.

My great grandfather as well...Okinawa WWII. He was hellbent on not only surviving the thing, but buying his first car when he returned. Sold all of his beer coupons and cigarettes for enough money to do just that...and lived to the ripe old age of 89 without ever taking a sip afaik. It's all a choice, I dont judge people either way..

I love this story. It brings me back to my first venture into whiskey and the experience around it. My family were and still are alcoholics and drinking had such a negative connotation. Welcome to the tribe good sir. Whiskey brought us together, the friendships keep us together. Not the alcohol.

I'm so happy for Dave and the outcome. This all started back in February of 2020 when Dave posted a question on Whiskybase asking for suggestions for a first dram. There were quite a few wild suggestions, but I thought he deserved to have this done properly. I'm the one that put him in touch with Roy and suggested Glengoyne as both a dram and a location. My own planned trip to Scotland and "rendezvous" with Roy could easily ended up with meeting them both. But then it all had to be put on hold for the reason we all know. Doesn't look like there will be a trip this year either, but Scotland will be there and as Schwarzenegger; I'll be back. Hopefully to raise a dram with Roy, and after this success someday raise a glass with Dave as well.

So, I'm someone who didn't grow up with a lot of alcohol consumption, and I've got a lot of that same kind of perspective that getting wasted and all of that _really_ doesn't appeal to me. I don't ever want to lose control because of alcohol, and part of that _is_ that I know that my brain is hard enough to control sober, I don't really want to stack the deck against myself too much. So, I've never had enough alcohol at once to really be what I would consider drunk. It... 'helps' that alcohol tends to make me drowsy, more than anything else, so... there is that as a limiting factor, too. That said, I do enjoy alcohol, I've just... very much favored flavor over 'stopping power' when it comes to getting me hammered. So, the drinks that I'm drawn to are the ones that I enjoy the taste of, and that _does_ include things like whiskey. I really like this video, going over drinks like this. So... thank you :)

You guys captured this with such grace and joy. What a beautiful experience and I feel so enriched for having witnessed it. I was sitting at home in a slightly pensive COVID mood and when I found this video I started watching. I couldn't help thinking what a great sport he is for all the nosings and how interested he was in soaking up the experience. Then you went outside and were about to pour that first taste. He was so articulate in his toast and I soaked up every word of it. I couldn't help myself, had to press pause, then pour myself the only bit of whiskey I had in the house, a Laproaig 10 (I was secretly hoping he would chose Lagavulin, my personal favorite, but I respect him sticking to his game plan). I could not help but raise my glass and toast with all of you and partake in this grand experience. I really felt like I was there. Cheers to you and your amazing generosity for turning this event into a lifetime experience and bringing us all along for the ride. I can only wonder what that second glass was like. Thank you. K

Dad loved Whiskey, he dragged all of us grown kids and mum to Scotland in 2019, his 60th birthday. Glengoyne was one of the places we took a tour of, out of around the 10 distilleries we visited that week is was the best tour by far so I remember the place very very well. When I mentioned it was his 60th birthday to the guide she poured him one of their more expensive bottles instead of the 12 year old everyone was tasting. Have to admit though it was my least favorite whiskey of the whole trip :)

I was almost in the same boat as dave. I too am 50 and didn’t have my first drink until later in life, 45 years old, for many of the same reasons. I am enjoying the journey. I think the advantage of waiting until later in life is the experience is for enjoyment and quality, not partying or getting trashed. I am on a tight budget, so I haven’t been able to experience a whole lot and still slowly making my way around the options. I haven’t tried scotch yet and it intrigues me. So far my go to sippers are 4 Roses and Wolf Moon. Loving this experience!

@@davecummins4605 So I also had my first alcoholic drink about a week ago. It was an Aberfeldy 12. I tried to follow the advice and methods regarding nosing and tasting. It was a 0.7l bottle which I drank in 3 consecutive evenings. I should say one of my intentions in drinking was to experience the euphoria and that state when people are a bit tipsy. Strangely, I experienced no differences mentally or physically. I drank 230ml (5 servings) within 2 hours each night. As I read this is not a very slow pace, and for someone who had no alcohol before I expected to feel some effect. Neither my stomach nor my mental state was influenced. And I am a small dude, 165cm, 68kg, age 35. Is this not strange? Regarding the taste, I tasted alcohol more on the first evening compared to the following evenings. I was not amazed but also not repelled. I have a Glenfiddich 15 three stops away from delivery according to Amazon's tracker :) I hope I have a better experience this time.

@@mikaelsad241 congrats! I had the same experience as you. I didn’t feel anything, even after a lot of whiskey! so when things were right, I wanted to see how much it would take to feel anything. It took 9 ounces over 3 hours to get me to 0.08. all I felt was a bit dizzy and in a good mood. Still have not had any hangover to speak about, nor any sickness... guess we are lucky, or its our fresh liver. One other odd thing for me is I love the cask strength stuff, the hotter the better. ! I do recommend getting a breathalyzer, the ones like the police use. it has been helpful in connecting how you feel to level of intoxication.

I remember my 1st taste of whisky. But 1st I am from Kentucky so don't judge. I was about 9 or 10 years old and we were visiting an Aunt and Uncle's house. At the time I was familiar with beer seen my family drink it all the time. But that night my uncle was drinking something different. A brown liquid from a what appeared to be a huge clear bottle instead of the smaller brown bottles beer was most commonly sold in at that time. He saw I was fascinated with it and asked my parents if he could let me sample some, they yes but just a very small amount. So, he grabbed a shot glass off his bar and pour less than half a glass. Before he slid it across the table to me he said this isn't the westerns, sip on it just enough to get a taste and hold it before you try to swallow it. I also remember him saying it took many years to make this so you don't waste it by shooting it sip on it and enjoy the flavor. I think they were expecting to see me choke and gag on it much as was the practice to get kids caught smoking to smoke a whole pack to deter the practice from continuing. Instead it spawned a love of Bourbon.

The Budget Roy Duff is almost as cool as the real thing 👏👏👏👏👏 Congrats to Dave for responsibly joining the cool kids who sip the brown drink, and thanks to Daniel, Rex and the Whiskey Tribe family for sharing Dave's first step on his whisky journey. Cheers!

This is got to be one of the best episodes ever. It reminds me of my whisky journey also. For basically the same reasons that he had for not drinking, or some of the same reasons I had. His reaction was priceless.

Lagavulin always reminds me of a campfire on a northern, rocky beach with the smell and flavor. Like a misty evening next to a fire on the rocky shores of Maine. Coincidentally, that is also a fantastic place to enjoy a glass of Lagavulin 16.

@@davidcummins2901 when we went up there last year, we did a surf and turf at the house we stayed at with lobster and ribeye steaks and it definitely paired well with the Lagavulin 16. It was a fantastic combination. Highly recommend it! You can't beat fresh Maine lobster, I can say that for sure.

I remember getting stationed at Iwakuni Japan and everytime Okinawa had a alcohol related incident we would also get punished for it. For this dude to be sober in Okitraz is just insane. Mad Respeck!

Super cool video! I'm 47 and just started drinking Whisky this past December so while I may not have been a non-alcohol drinker, it took me almost as long to get to the fine world of Whisky! Cheers!

I don’t know why I had a smile on my face seeing Dave try an alcoholic for the first time in his life at the age of 50. Just something about it made me so happy seeing him enjoy the smelling and tasting of the whiskey.

That's very cool to hear Ian! With which whisky did you start with? My old man (from Serbia) is "heavy" on his rakija, even makes his own - yearly. I want to share the experience, and open up his views (which I'm only embarking on now myself) with him. What would you suggest?

Y'all are so wholesome and entertaining I didn't even like whiskey when I started watching your channel, but I'm coming around to it now [and weirdly enough my favorite so far is Laphroaig triple wood] This episode is great and I'm happy this man will get to enjoy drinks with his friends for the rest of his life.
