Briana has the best descriptions of whiskey I have ever heard. She is completely unconventional in her language but I instantly understand what she is talking about in a visceral way. It’s not just that she is lacking the pretense that would lock her into specific vocabulary - she is a savant.
@ToomanyFrancis
@ToomanyFrancis Жыл бұрын
Slurping is very important in tea and coffee tasting, even Starbucks baristas are taught the slurp. I was a bit surprised when I started learning about whiskey tasting and nobody was slurping, but it makes sense. Slurping gets more air into your mouth and forces you to breath in through your nose as you're tasting, then the continued slurp aerates it and lets it cool off, temperature actually has a huge impact on your sense of taste. With whiskey there's no need to cool it, so the extra slurp doesn't do as much.

The moment Brianna said "Air sticky", I immediately had a flashback to my last deployment in the US Navy. We went to 8 or 9 different countries in Southeast Asia that summer, but "Air sticky" is a spot on description for Thailand in July. I remember it being 95°F or more every day and just when you thought the humidity couldn't be any worse (we were required to wear long pants and collared shirts, by the way), out of nowhere it would start raining for 5-10 minutes and quit. The steam coming off the pavement and metal roofs made it almost difficult to breathe, like if you took too big a sip of Stagg Jr.

@@jhenke83 pretty good actually, I have had some old Wild Turkey before that was in a ceramic decanter but unfortunately had a cork lid and the cork degraded over time and left sediment in the whiskey. The James beam in the ceramic decanter that I opened had a thread style lid with the foam/plastic seal so the whiskey started out already better. The taste was very good, still had a sweet taste to it with a strong smoke flavor, didn't taste degraded very much as it was in the dark ceramic bottle.

Never was into hard liquor (tequila being an exception) but i'll never forget a friend who drank only jack black and whose dad drank only wild turkey. one day his dad brought out a bottle of jack and shared it with my friend. billy (my friend) asked his dad if he would admit that jack tasted better. the old man told billy that they'd been drinking wild turkey all afternoon. he had just poured wt into one of billy's empty jack bottles. ocie (billy's dad) could also make some kickass wine.

I've always thought that Talisker is one of those distilleries where there's less of a difference between the 10yo and their 18yo than most. Which makes Talisker an odd choice for such an experiment. The super old stuff can be spectacular though - although even the 25yo is far too expensive for me :-) I'm glad that someone actually opened a bottle of Xpedition though!
@mentalrectangle

Agreed. Talisker 10 is a very solid whiskey in its own right. Usually I don't like even the 12s from a lot of major Scotch distilleries but despite being a mere 10 years, it packs more flavor and subtlety than a lot of 16 year whiskeys out there.
