Awesome! No offense to Brianna, I think that shes bringing a ton of new people to the channel with how popular she is as an on-screen talent, but I've really missed this format of video. It feels like what this channel is at its heart and doesnt seem like its getting super edit heavy or clickbaity.

Unfortunately I've stepped away from the community because of the direction that the videos have gone. It wasn't what I signed up for, and videos like this are what I was originally invested in. Occasionally I click on a video to see if I enjoy it again, and I have not been. I understand the new content appeals to a larger audience, and I left silently because it is better for them. But this video felt like a nostalgia trip and I miss this kind of format.

Here in Scotland it’s very common to dilute whisky with quite a lot of water, blending whisky at 20% is most likely done to account for this. I’m a bartender in Scotland, we always give our customers whisky with a separate jug of water for them to ad themselves, everyone has a different preference for how much water they like but I think most people will be very surprised as to how much water Scots like in their whisky.

Very excited to see an episode on this topic... Im a blender for a largeish Scotch company and when I started nosing at 20% it was pretty bizzare but not its what im used to, higher proofs hurt. Daniel touched on it briefly but anoother big reason of doing it, is if im nosing 100 or so casks in a day for our vatting of a core product theres no chance my nose would still if it was at strength... cool topic and great video!

Is there any reason you would start neat and not at 20% abv and work up? The perceived flavor alone is usually hard to overcome when going down in proof from pour to pour, in my experience. I imagine two of the reasons blenders proof it down so hard is their experience in tasting/nosing doesnt require as much proof, and to be able to continue on for hours without fatigue (as you mentioned). If they have the cask they can always work back up to bottling proof

The Cult is displeased with the heresy of not including Ardbeg in the list. That is all. That said the tasting on the JW Black was interesting to see how the blending proof switched things up. Sounds like you need two glasses to drink it properly though - one at blending proof for the nose, and then a glass of octomore to actually enjoy what you're drinking 😅

Great episode. When I smell the bourbons, I only smell alcohol. I have been drinking all my bourbons in a rocks glass over a round or square ice. Most of these tasting notes are like looking at a picture of a forest and pointing out individual leaves on trees. The tasting notes can be extremely subtle - 1% of the flavor sometimes. A/B comparisons help with tasting notes, but it's really not important. I'm honestly drifting back toward not scrutinizing at all.

Exactly, the average whisky drinker doesn’t pay attention to individual notes, it’s all about the final flavor at bottling proof.

When watering down to 20% it might make sense to drink differently. With lower alcohol beverages it's common to aerate the drink in your mouth to get the most out of it (see wine and tea). Doing that with 20% whisky could proof to be quite interesting. Much love

So interesting to me that whiskey makers take the ABV as far down as 20% and still know that they can put together a higher proof whiskey. As someone who drinks a lot of high proof and cask strength bourbons, it's hard to think that you'd be able to get any notes out of it considering that I think 80 proof whiskey is watery and flat
@MorganBretonWelsh Жыл бұрын
Any whisky that leaves the British Isles legally has to be sold at 40%. Don't know about the US. If you're drinking 40% and think it tastes watered down you need to back off the higher proofs for a while because you're missing out. I was in Edinburgh and bought a Octomore 13.1 at 59% it blew me away, fullest flavoured whisky I ever had but when i was on the Isle of Mull I dropped in at Tobermory and bought a bottle (when it was still open to visitors) at 46% and still enjoyed plenty of flavour. Than last year I was in Northern Ireland. Me and my father stopped at Bushmills for some dinner but decided to go up to the distillery and buy a bottle for when we got to Rathlin Island and it was the best 40% I've ever tasted in my life...then again, the romanticism of the whole area probably helped it along.

I agree, I drink a lot of 101-110 proof bourbons and if I go down to anywhere near 80-86, there’s no burn whatsoever.

Our quick method in the sample room is if you pour 20ml of the spirit and then make up the rest of the volume to the ABV it will be at 20%... so 20ml of 40% whisky, add 20ml water and it'll be at 20%

Y'all have taught me that adding water to whiskey in various amounts makes one bottle of whiskey into several bottles of whiskey. So much changes with only a few drops. And man, does the water matter! Distilled only, never tap. Think of the differences between tap water in Colorado versus tap water in Oklahoma versus tap water in Missouri.
@beebobox Жыл бұрын
Tap water here, but I might be called lucky when it comes to tap water.
@Sniperboy5551 Жыл бұрын
@beebobox Yeah, tap water can’t be standardized to everyone else, but you’re not bottling it and sending it to anyone else. I think he’s saying distilled only because that means anyone can hypothetically achieve the same flavor profile as far as water goes, but use whatever works for you!
