You've reminded me of the Geezer's Paradox, which states, "As we grow older, we progressively care less about being cool. And, not caring about cool is the only real way to be cool." Stay nerdy, my friend.

By your definition, I have been uncool my whole life. But I think the best people have been discovered through this passion of whiskey. Cheers my friend and Thank you for another great conversation 🥃

I’ve never been a spirits guy. I’ve always been a wine guy and I appreciated wine way more after watching the movie “French Kiss” where Meg Ryan’s character asks Kevin Klein’s character about his box and he explains it as all the local plants in the ground and asks her to try the wine again and she describes the terroir’s influence. Whiskey is the only spirit that reminds me of wine in that way. Been watching the channel for a while now and how you describe things. The nose, the palate, the back end. It’s given me a greater appreciation of all the effort that goes into a whiskeys creation. Thank you for everything you are doing to educate us on all things whiskey.

The fact that wizard academy is ‘small’ & relatively unknown is in part what makes you guys special.

Since the big legacy Canadian distilleries make Whisky in a deconstructed way, I think they could put together an "American Single Malt " from existing stock in no time at all. Because they use enzyme extract for mashing, they distill just corn or rye and malted barley (no extract needed for the malt, of course) and age the spirit separately in barrels to blend after maturation their must have been stock on hand ready to make a malt at any time. Cheers Daniel

I'm happy that you can say outloud that weak/accessible whiskeys have their place. Imagine how many nerds would never had gone the whiskey rabbit hole if they hadn't.

I'm not sure about the deets on the Crown, but Canadian Single Malt is so different from any other malt definition that I'm aware of. In Canada, as long as the grain has been malted, you can call the whisky: Single Malt. And I think you can even use a column still and over-purify it (but those elements I'm less clear on). Just as Canada has freedom of Wood, we essentially also have freedom of Malt 😀 I don't have an issue with it per se, but I feel like transparency is the key. If they are using malted grains, other than barley, I'd appreciate having it disclosed. Yukon Two Brewers (and a couple of other brewer-distilleries) have used multi-grain beer recipes to create their whiskies. Most of the time they are noting if it was a grain other than barley (such as a malted rye or wheat), but not always. In the case of the CR Malt, I'm not sure if they are using barley exclusively, but I think they are. The still proof is probably way up there, though. Canada's limit is far higher than US standards (even on pot still...and, unlike the Scots who only seem to max out their still proofs on grain whiskies, many Canadian distilleries seem to take it as a challenge to always distill north of 90% ABV). Hoping to eventually try the CR Malt...maybe...😆

Also, with the one-eleven rule, it's possible it was cut with 2 YO grain spirit.

I don’t have a problem with crown. I’ve had it as an all around regular whiskey before. It’s alright. Next subject aside from crown. Ha. I’m in my single malt journey and I’m loving it so much!!! Benromach is my current obsession. Great video as usual. Always love watching

I liked on the crown royal web site. It just says distilled in copper. So it could be either column or pot.

Had the Crown Royal Single Malt at a tasting back in October. Struggled to get many notes both nose & palette. So, I bought a bottle to see if I could get much out of it. I still struggled. To those that enjoy the Crown Single Malt. Feel free to help a brother out to any nose and tasting notes.

Firstly the definition of cool can be different. Nerdy cool vs Pop cool are different things. It can be cool to be kind, being cool like Bill and Ted by being excellent to one another is possible. Being the trendy cool is the kind to be avoided. Keeping up with the Joneses only leads to unhappiness. The Academy is cool in the good way of being off in your own part of the world and happily embracing those who find you cause those who seek out the experiences and feelings of the place. The people who think the place is cool believe it is because it speaks to them in a way that few places do. From the learning and camaraderie at the tower, to the contemplative hill sides surrounded in Texas scrub, and to the fun and energy on the crowded barrel side. It's a neat place I would call cool not for being exclusive by keeping people out but by the people it attracts

I was just going to say that there is a difference between "cool" and cool. Then Daniel made that very distinction. It might have been helpful to state that up front rather than 12 and a half minutes in.

Cool is subjective, but popular is statistical. The goal is to live the hipster ideal of being cool but unpopular. As someone who strays from hype, I'm all in for it. Cheers to the small business entrepreneurds. Also: CR bag in white looks diaper-esque, and "whiskey in a bag" reads like "wine in a box."

The only good Crown Royal is Northern Harvest Rye..... 😅 it's not a product I'm proud of as a Canadian 😂 try Signal Hill Overproof or Canadian Club Invitation 18 High Proof 😮

Canadian Club did a barley batch in 2018 celebrating 160 years, they were 6 years ahead of Crown. I'm not a fan of Crown products though, I'd rather drink a Glen Breton 10 as an introduction.

Yes, Single Malt isn’t a Scotch realm. Siked to see where this goes. I think of grunge in the 90s, when it wasn’t cool as soon as it was mainstream. Ha

Isn't there push back from some of your favorite distillers saying that limiting the proof is holding back flavors and innovation? Referring to new TTB regulations on American whiskey.

I disagree with your definition of "cool". I think what you think of as "cool" is really "trendy" or "hip". Something that is truly cool is beyond trends. It's enduring. A cool thing can be trendy but it was cool before the trend and will be cool after the trend. Albert King is cool, he was trendy for a bit, but that didn't change his inherent coolness.
@WhiskeyVault

I agree with you completely when it comes to the true meaning ofcool. In this case, I'm using it as a euphemism for trendy.

As y’all well know I’m in the idk what you think group. But doing something in hopes to be considered cool, is a falsehood ontop of a lie. People will eventually see the real you. And see the fake. But being your unique you and not caring what people say about you is what real cool is. IMO.

Fads, trends, hip, fly, cool, pop culture, etc. Brings to mind, the TV commercials, "Trix are for kids". The growth and popularity of bourbon is good. But, bourbon gimmicks are getting silly.

These guys are hurrying everything to get on board with this movement. And that's probably working for them with many Americans who don't drink scotch unless its 40 ABV and from Speyside, and my guess is it was bought for them and they've barely touched it. I'll stick with whisky, thank you. Whisky with no "e".

The problem is, since Crown Royal is a Canadian whiskey, the "Single Malt" label on the bottle means absolutely nothing. What you are actually drinking is "Canadian Whiskey". The label of "single malt", in this case, is like saying "small batch" or "rare". It makes me wonder what is really in it. American Single Malt must be produced in America.
