Today is my 21st birthday. I'm a big fan of the channel and wanted to thank you guys for the fun and informational videos you make. My favorite whiskeys are red brest 12 and green spot, I'm not sure i would have found them without your content. Because of you I can confidently go out and buy my first "legal" bottle of whiskey, being red brest 12 cask strength, and known that I will love it. If you wouldn't mind raising a glass of red brest with me to celebrate that would be amazing. Keep up the shananagins and the great work on building a better whiskey community.

Whiskey fail: so I was sitting preparing myself to enjoy a dram when my dog's bewitching hour hit. She pounced into my lap, after doing a few circles, spilling the entire contents of my glass all over me. Then the doorbell rings and there are a couple of shocked Mormons standing with their literature in hand. Apparently the colorful language I was using and my reeking of alcohol gave them the impression I was beyond redemption, as they turned and left wordlessly, with pamphlets firmly grasped.

My first glass was Lagavulin 16, i loved it so much i bought a bottle the next day. I never understood how people drank liquor neat until i tried scotch. Now between the peat smoke and high abv's i have virtually no working alchohol reception left on my tongue, its great! I sometimes forget and hand people a 50% or higher dram expecting them to get the nuance of flavors, and instead they give me looks as if I'm trying to poison them... "What do you taste?!" I ask excitedly, ready to nerd out on the complexity. "Smoke, and death" they respond as the excitement drains from my face..

So true about the deep end. Personally my five first experiences with whisky were: 1. Whisky sour based on Ardbeg 10. 2. Laphroaig 10 neat. 3. Bowmore 18 neat & with a drop of water (IMO better with water). 4. Bowmore 15 neat & with a drop of water (IMO better without water). 5. Bowmore Enigma 12 (travel exclusive). I guess I'm one of the 30% then...

Whiskey Failure? So last summer, my wife and I were invited to spend the weekend in a cottage on a lake with very good friends, and I decide that I would take a flask of Blanton's Gold to share with the husband of the relationship, and possibly enjoy a cigar (that he brought) with it. Friday night we get there too late to really enjoy anything, so we get settled. Saturday is a day at the beach, and being Wisconsin, well, we drink all day. Anywho, being an experienced Cheesehead (transplant) I pace myself. He, on the other hand, proceeds to get annihilated on cheap shit beer and spends the afternoon literally roasting himself in the sun while passed out in an inner tube on the lake. Needless to say, he was in no shape to drink. So ... I didn't share the Blanton's. Not sure if this is a failure as the question intended, because I failed to enjoy a shared whiskey with a friend, or if this is some sort of anti-failure because I didn't give an unappreciative sort any of my prized Blanton's Gold. Regardless, I won because I drank the Blanton's myself ... so ... well, shit, who knows if this is a failure.

When I was of legal age, I happened to be cowboying and first fell upon Canadian Rye whiskey there, experimenting to find my drink of choice took me to tequila, several types of rye, multiple bourbons, a bottle or two of Johnny Walker red (which I hated), jagermeifster and even a martini or two. Finally settling on primarily Rye on the rocks, with occasional forays into the better bourbons and tequilas, I thought I'd found my groove. That is until my brother picked up the GoT Lagavulin a month ago.... Ever since, I've been drinking almost exclusively scotch, I've really become fond of the smokier, peatier whiskeys, they remind me of a good cigar. So far I've tried Lagavulin 9 and 16, Monkey Shoulder, Highland Park and Bare Legs. This week I plan on grabbing some Laphroaig, depending on what the LCBO has available. It can be hard to source certain things in Ontario. If you ever have a chance, you might enjoy some Alberta Premium Dark Horse. Its 45%, delicious on the rocks and a far cry from the original Alberta Premium, which can be used to remove nail polish and clean up tarnished silverware ( always wear gloves). Thanks for the continuing introductions to new whiskey and education about it. Josh.

I have a whiskey failure to report. About 8-9 months ago I had a Four Roses Single Barrel (my favorite Bourbon at the time) that I had only drank down to about two thirds of the bottle. One night when I went to pour another glass of this fine whiskey, the top broke off leaving most of the cork in the top of the bottle, as can happen from time to time. I tried vainly to get the stuck cork up out of the bottle neck but only succeeded in breaking it up into little bits that fell into the whiskey. Not having any other corks at the time I was desperate to find another proper container to strain the whiskey into to rid it of the cork. As it turned out, the only available empty bottle in the house was an empty Amsterdam Gin bottle from my roommate. I tried to wash it as best I could and strained the whiskey into the bottle. After a couple of days I came back to it and the taste was an awful mix of cheap gin and bourbon that was undrinkable and I had to dump the rest of it down the drain. I have not bought a bottle of Four Roses SIngle Barrel since.

I was gonna say that a whiskey failure is leaving a bottle open overnight, but the real whisky failure is not knowing Rex's name. I would like to request a toast to a passed friend. When I met Glenn Thomas just over two years ago, I was told jokingly that he was an alcoholic. However, I found that under his seemingly intoxicated exterior was a very smart man who reminded me much of myself. Without him I might have never begun my whiskey journey. And, even though last new year he mooched half my bottle of Johnnie Walker Black directors cut, I will miss him greatly. Cheers.

I just found this bourbon on the store shelf yesterday, 7/7/20. But it was touted as "Unfiltered". You had to look close to see that it was Bottled in Bond. It was only 22 dollars so I couldn't resist. It is a really has a unique flavor. It has not been charcoal filtered, that's all. It says it is a limited edition bottle.

I did a similar thing to a friend at a cocktail bar , he had only ever had your regular budget alcohols and mixed drinks but said he preferred whiskey so I asked him have you ever had scotch ill treat to you one. So im looking and I notice they had the Compass Box Peat Monster and thought well this should be interesting. I cant really remember if i warned him or not but now everytime i see him he talks about that "band aid" whiskey we tried and how we need to go get more turned him into a fan. The "band aid" thing refers to a medicinal note we get from it because i told him the smell reminds me of Salve and a band aid.

I prefer lighter lagers, pilsners, or malty porters or stouts while drinking whiskey. I personally feel like hoppy beers do not pair well with whiskey because the bitter hops overwhelm subtleties in the whiskey. If I am drinking IPA’s, then I am probably not drinking my good whiskey.

Have you ever thought of contacting the cruse lines about doing Whiskey cruses? Or do you already do them? I use to take a lot of cruses and I believe it would be a blast! I might even be able to get my wife to sign up for another cruse. You get a free cruse as you would work the cruse lecturing on the various aspects of Whiskey. I.E. History, the various ways to drink Whiskey, The types and how they differ, Etc. Then you visit one or more various Distilleries on the cruse. But if you do arrange a cruse, don't limit it to Ireland and Scotland. I know you can't cruse to Kentucky or Tennessee, but that's no reason to not have a Bourbon cruse. Not everyone can afford a cruse in Europe, But a lot of us can afford a cruse leaving and returning to a port in Texas.

I suppose the closest I've had to a "Whisk(e)y" fail (As I've had many fails with other spirits or drinks) would be that for some reason, I keep thinking that someday, one day, I'm going to order a "Scotch and soda" and actually like it. Hundreds have been spent on the pursuit of which... only for me to have the same reaction each time, as the first one, no matter which Scotch is used. Also, there was this time when I lived in Japan, that I was walking down a narrow street with a bottle of Hakushu 10 in my hand (Adorned with a straw) and a salaryman came rushing out of a bar in that way where he's just trying to move forward because he was going down and he wanted to stay on his feet... he failed. Upon rushing out, he knocked the bottle out of my hand (Which still had about 4/5 still in it) and it shattered on the ground. Not sure if that would be MY "Fail" or his... but I was rather bummed nevertheless.

Whiskey (?) fail..... In my very early 20s, a buddy was throwing a party at his house. We went in on a BIG bottle of Jaegermeister and another of Rumplemintz 100 proof peppermint schnapps. Friends arrived and the night began it’s downward spiral as soon as we began playin *QUARTERS* with “sledgehammer” shots (50/50 Jaegermeister and Rumplemintz). A jar of moonshine (yes, *REAL* “from the mountains” “white lightning” with a shriveled-up peach in the bottom of the mason jar of jet-freakin-fuel, moonshine) began circling the kitchen table as I mixed the sledgehammers for the next victim of a quarter in a cup. Idiot time: Rationalizing that “since I personally had *PAID* half the money for the bottles of Jaegermeister and Rumplemintz, I was “gonna get MY SHARE” as it was being pretty quickly consumed. I quarter would go in a cup and I would pour a shot of each into a mixing cup, serve one shot to the victim and drink the other, myself. 😖 The jar of moonshine made it’s rounds and I never missed that either. The best I can factor, I consumed *AT LEAST* 8 shots of moonshine and *SEVENTEEN* sledgehammers...........*in about half an hour!!!* I’ll spare you all the details of THE REST of that horrid night....but suffice to say that a king sized waterbed IS NOT a good idea after that assault on my entire digestive tract....which *WON........SOUNDLY!!!* 30 years later, even the *SIGHT* of a bottle of Jaegermeister will make me wretch and heave!

Whiskey Failure-- in a misguided attempt to develop a taste for grownup drinks several years ago, I picked up a half-bottle of Black Label. I thought that the best way to gently ease my way in was to pour like half an ounce into an Old Fashioned Glass and fill it the rest of the way with water and ice. One sip made me gag. I didn't even bother taking the rest of the bottle when I moved. I know better now, and am acclimating myself to whiskey with a bottle of Monkey Shoulder. Hey Rex and Daniel, Been watching for a while now and noticed that you have hard time liking a lot of Canadian whiskey, if anything I can understand how the price could deter you as due to taxes it appears we can easily pay 20-30% more than even the US for the identical product or products of similar offering from both sides of the border. For example in Ontario, a bottle of Talisker 10 is $105 CAD (~$80 USD), while in Japan the same bottle is ~$50 CAD (~$37.50 USD). If you guys have been up to the Great White North, have you found the same increase in price for many of your favorites? and then do the prices stay high as you go back into the US?

Just throwing this out there... Jim Beam Bonded... shouldn’t that be almost the same thing? It’s a Bottled in Bond Whiskey from Jim Beam... also 4 years old and bottled at 50% ABV... I also think it’s pretty decent - a younger Knob Creek in a sense.
@mitchheiter38015 жыл бұрын
As far as I know bottled in bond should be quite similar, only difference I can think of would be being blended by a master distiller.

Mitch Heiter right, cask selection... maybe... Small Batch versus large production... maybe that’s where Daniel thought he was going with the Single Barrel (which is much weaker, and not as good... in my opinion)

Gotta say though, I really enjoyed the single barrel. Maybe just for the reason it was the first one I had. Haven't had it since, mainly just because I don't want to distort the memory.

Mitch Heiter I’m not saying their Single Barrel is bad... also, each should be subtly different... I’m just saying that, in my opinion, 42.5% ABV has a hard time competing with 50% ABV, to my palate, anyhow. Feel free to check out my Instagram @d.northrup85 and scroll down a bit (nearly all my spirits reviews are in the same column) there’s a numbered series of Bourbon Reviews - No.2 is Jim Beam Bonded, No.9 is Knob Creek Small Batch, and No.15 is Jim Beam Single Barrel...
