+neandrewthal Do you believe that age matters to whisky, or do you support NAS marketing?
@neandrewthal
@neandrewthal 9 жыл бұрын
+Malt454 That is actually a complicated question that depends on a lot of factors. I`m assuming you are talking about scotch whisky (because its the only whisky that isnt mostly NAS by default) so I will speak about that. I think producers should generally be allowed to market whisky any way they want. This includes being able to state EXACTLY the various ages of whisky that go into a bottle. But by Scottish law they are only allowed to give the minimum age statement. Say a producer makes a premium single malt which is a blend of whiskies from 11 to 18 years. By law they have to label it 11 years old or NAS. Its an easy decision for them to make it NAS instead of selling themselves short calling it 11yo. Then another producer comes along and says they are charging how much for a whisky with no age statement? I`m gonna bottle an 8 year old malt with NAS, jack the price higher than my 12 year old malt and call it day. Im not sure exactly how the NAS trend started or got out of hand but I suspect it may be something like the scenario above. If I am right then the problem is caused by the law of age labelling with minimum age only. If the producer of an 11 to 18 year old whisky were allowed to say so on the bottle instead of NAS then they would do so. Then whenever you are at the store and you see a NAS malt with no age whatsoever and the price is high you would know you are getting ripped off. I dont have a problem with producers of premium aged malts hiding the age if it means they are forced to portray it as much younger than it`s average age. I have a problem with producers passing off young malts for high prices.

+neandrewthal The problem, however, is that the issue isn't one of "producer freedom", it's that NAS is built upon a completely bullshit premise: that age maturation not only doesn't matter to all whisky, but that it magically varies with whether age is discussed on the label. Whether people "care about age" or whether concealing it "can be a good business move" is completely immaterial to the fact that NAS is a lie in what it says about age maturation: "it's only important where the industry wants to discuss it for marketing". If the problem is "caused by the law", it's most certainly been a law which the industry itself has had a lot of influence over (as per the Cardhu "Pure Malt" change), so the idea that the industry's "hands are tied" vs. just intentionally using NAS to hide the age of young whisky is pretty funny. Producers "want" to give me more information but, failing that, they'll tell me that "age is just a number"?

I gotta say that I was a bit skeptical of your channel at first, but the more I watch, the more you grow on me. You're like the wise whiskey-drinking father I never had... Or could just be the whiskey talking. Either way, you earned my subscription sir! Now if you could just turn off your mic when you swish the whiskey in your mouth, that would be ideal... That, and dress up like Christopher Walken. Cheers! Keep up the good work!

Could use some food safe (chopping board) glue. That stuff is really strong, hence why they use it to hold chopping boards together. I would also rough up the inside of the wood/plastic top of the cork with some coarse sandpaper. Just to create a key for the glue to stick to. It's what I do.

The real question is what's going on on the left side. Is the painting tilted? Is the bottle misshapen? Or are you using a wide angle lens that's warping the edge of the frame. Forget about corks.

Easy fix. Open w wine opener once the cork is stuck
@TristanJCumpole
@TristanJCumpole 9 жыл бұрын
How you open a bottle *correctly*. I'd also disagree that a cork is a sign of a "good" bottle of whisky. Like wine, this is simply down to customer expectation as opposed to a genuine advantage in the use of cork. Being a natural product it is subject to variance in quality and efficacy. If we lived in an objective world, materials such as plastics and metal would be used. Unfortunately, weight of tradition and subjective opinion taints sense and we're stuck with corks.

Now that you've addressed the physics of opening a bottle, how about addressing the physics question of whether all whisky is a product of its age, or can the influence of cask maturation be magically "turned off" by an NAS label where its duration is inconvenient for marketing? It's very hard to take you, or anyone, as any kind of whisky expert when you don't address the industry idea that the influence of age is, or can be, label dependent.

@Malt454
@Malt454 4 жыл бұрын
@@steven4570 - No, there are good NAS expressions, but none that "have" to be NAS or are made any better for being NAS. It's true I don't buy them, but for the latter reason, not the former. I don't believe in giving up product information on the basis that the industry, or whisky "experts", tell me I don't "need" it on this or that bottle because it fits better into their production or labelling schedule. All whisky is a product of its age, whether anyone finds it convenient to discuss that age or not.

Your guidance on the carcinogenic nature of cyanoacrylate glues is wildly incorrect; they have not been proven to be toxic once cured. That said, the fumes during that curing process are an irritant to mucous membranes but beyond that they are relatively inert. As long as the whisky is not coming into contact with the glue it is an ideal adhesive for mending a broken cork back to the main stopper. Even then, alcohol does not react with cured CA glues to my knowledge. Cyanocrylate adhesives are often found in medical use for device bonding and as an alternative to suturing (stiches) since they have a high level of biocompatibility. Thermoplastic hot melt glues are generally non-toxic, however there is a far broader range of materials used to produce those glue sticks. It is wise to check their composition.
