Ralphy, your vlogs have provided me with invaluable info when it comes to deciding what whisky I'd like to try. Before I buy a new whisky, I search your page for any info. I value your opinion and admit it is a deciding factor because after watching the majority of your vids, you know your stuff when it comes to whisky so don't let the snobs get you down. Keep the vids coming!!

I bought a bottle of this recently. The only Balvenie I had was the caribbean cask and I did enjoy it. The information on the packaging really drew me in -- single cask, first fill, etc. Then I watched your review and was happy I spent the money (Balvenie is expensive here in the States). Had it for the first time tonight -- just sublime stuff. Poured a dram after and watched your review again. Life is good.

Ralfy- I would like to thank you for your candor in your reviews. In this review in particular you made a very cogent argument about distillery marketing interests versus those of us who are out to savour our purchases. More importantly it is my opinion that you also stand as an advocate for we consumers to make purchases with our hard earned money. Since I have been convalescing from surgery, friends and neighbors who know my new found appreciation for single malt scotches have fueled my nascent collection and thus I have not purchased but one of my own bottles. What makes these bottles special is that they were given in friendship and love. Of course even if some were less costly than others, I have also recognized other factoids from other reviews that you have done such as enjoying scotch with good company, as well as appreciating the whole spectre of the single malt experiencing. Although American as apple pie, tea is still my number one drink whenever and wherever, but my appreciation for the the Single Malt Scotch experience makes me appreciate the $30 USD bottle experience as much as the $100 USD. While there are going to be definitive differences in taste in bottles in those price ranges, you have given food for thought for me and many of my countrymen. One confession I do make is that sometimes I sit on the back deck with a dram reading from my kindle app on the iPad watching our goats and traffic on the nearby highway and reflect on how lucky I am to have the life I do. If I ever do come into money I do want my own bottle of expensive stuff just once in my life to see if alters the entire experience. Keep up the good work.

Without a doubt, some of the best, and most concise, criticism of the current approach to marketing: it's becoming overly concerned with short-term advantage rather than long-term credibility - although I wouldn't have said this happens "not so much in the whisky industry" because it's FAR from immune from this problem. On another note, single cask might not always mean what people think it means. Folks might want to read "Glendronach Confusion (or What is a “Single Cask”?)" on My Annoying Opinions.

Not wanting to be a nuisance, but was anyone else a bit surprised that this malt received a score of 90? Ralfy - you carried on what a great malt this is (and rightfully so - it's a wonderful dram), and I was expecting a score of 92, or more. Oh well - keep up the good work as always Ralfy!

I absolutely love The Balvenie 14 year caribbean cask so much it's my daily drink. I keep the 15 year select on hand for special occasions. My first scotch whisky was The Balvenie 12 year doublewood and I've sought out to try everything from this distillery. Maybe one day I'll get to try the 50 year but that's just a fantasy.

Hi Ralfy, Greetings from Australia. Another great review, and I have to say I really enjoy both the 12 and 15 single cask Balvenies. A great (but quite different) single cask that I have come across is Lark 43% from Tasmania. Cask 409, bottled in 2013, is a big sherry monster but without the sulphide tang that sometimes comes with sherry casks. To me it's reminiscent of eating a christmas pudding in a pine forest! A hard one to find for sure, but worth keeping an eye out for IMO. Non chill filtered, craft presentation and something out of the ordinary. Keep up the great work!

I need to revisit this. My friends and I felt that while it's different than the outgoing 15 and thus not meant to be the same, it doesn't measure up. We got some great barrels of 15 over here in the States. The 12 I've tried doesn't have the concentration, depth, and complexity I've always appreciated in the 15.

Ralfy. On another topic, I recently opened a bottle of non age statement Tyrconnell ABV 40% I purchased on an Irish Ferries ship last year for 26 euros. It's absolutely brilliant, beautifully smooth, and a bargain at the price I paid. If this is typical of Tyrconnell I'll be buying more.

I have watched this review countless times, I was on the buying seasaw with this particular Speyside whiskey. I had purchased and tried the 12yr doublewood maturing of this particular brand and was actually kinda disappointed. Then I saw they had this expression of their spirit and was quite intrigued by it. So it was you, good ol' Ralfy, that gave me that final push to give Balvenie another go, and as you said Ralfy its a very high integrity whiskey, the complexity of this spirit is rivaled only by its integrity. I look at my bottle and think to myself "now that's how you make Scotch" its long sweet lingering finish is something I look forward to tasting once in a blue moon.

Hi Ralfy. ...from the "best kept secret files"; Old GrandDad 'Bonded' Bourbon!! for an under $20 bourbon at 50%AbV this sprit is a surprisingly complex rye infused bourbon! (The GrandDad I understand was ol' Basil Hayden) Big gaudy orange label but Ralfy if you can locate OGG bonded you will agree its upper high 80's material. (surely a front-runner in any series of bourbon vlogs to be sure) good luck.

You may say it's at a fair price, and maybe it is in the UK. However, in the U.S., the price on a couple Balvenie expressions (the 15 yo single barrel, as well as this one) has skyrocketed. The Doublewood is still pretty good and affordable, but other than that one I really can't see any reason to buy Balvenie.

Ralfy is correct. In the UK excise duties for beers & spirits are calculated by litres of alcohol therefore the ABV is the determining factor in the amount of duty paid when goods are released from a bonded warehouse for public consumption. Wine duty on the other hand is determined upon liquid litreage against certain tax code parameters which have pre-determined minimum and maximum tolerances of ABV. Though it has to be said that every country has its own fiscal regime.

Hi Ralfy, Very surprised to hear you give such a good review of a Balvenie. I've sort of been "off" Balvenie ever since they seemed to be spending more time and energy on marketing, with all their "double wood" "triple wood" "portwood" gimmicks. I hope they have been paying attention, and maybe they are getting back to making good whiskey. I still don't like all the writing on the tube, though. Even if it's informative, it's still marketing! And that always indicates to me a misplacement of priorities.

Ralfy, Carry on being a pain in the "tukas" when it comes to the whisky marketing men. Too many Single Malts are just good instead of being outstanding because of bad marketing decisions. These guys need to be convinced that they will sell more if the whisky is simply distilled with quality ingredients and matured in quality casks. No chill filtering and no colouring. One more thing. I suspect that many of these sherry finishings are to hide a poor cask maturation.

It does leave a dent in the pocket :) I love the single barrel and the double wood.. Saw this one at the duty free but by then I had exhausted my quota.. Apparently you only get this at travel retail stores.. Thanks anyway!

What cask number? You seem to have changed your opinion of the one you reviewed in 2016.

Hi Ralfy, not really relevant but looking at a Signatory bottling of 18 year old Mortlach. Un-chillfiltered but only bottled at 46%....any thoughts?

Hello Ralfy. Hello maltmates! Can anyone decipher the differences between "fresh fill", "first fill" and an "ex-bourbon" casks??... Anyone?! Or is this maybe just an exercise in symantics? Peace
@repy123
@repy123 10 жыл бұрын
ex bourbon means it originally was used for bourbon. Bourbon law states you can only use oak casks once, so afterwards they sell them to scotch makes. First fill means the scotch was put in bourbon barrels for the first time after arriving in Scotland. Because you can re use the barrel many times over, but every time you use the barrel it loses it's oak influence. Fresh fill I've never hear of, I think you're mixing up first fill with fresh bourbon cask.

Balvenie 12yo Single Barrel is a stunning whisky but no longer in production. What whisky would you recommend that tastes similar?

AlexK - do you mean the 15 yr Single Barrel? That whisky has been discontinued in favour of the new 15 yr Sherry Cask...As far as I'm aware - the 12 yr Single Barrel continues to be distilled.

I based my comment on the fact that this whisky dissapeared from the range on official balvenie site. If it's still in production I don't know why they won't mention it on their site...

AlexK Well - here in the USA - the Balvenie website has the 12 yr Single Barrel listed (oddly enough they still list the 15 yr Single Barrel as well - however not the new 15 ys Sherry Cask). us.thebalvenie.com/our-range/

Is it really so difficult to spell your words out? Reading that gave me a headache. The Doublewood 12 is excellent, but not as good as the 15-year-old Single Barrel. The "whisky cask" is the barrel in which the spirit is matured. A bottle of an expression such as the Doublewood 12 may be drawn from multiple casks, whereas each bottle of the expression reviewed in this video is taken entirely from a single cask. Single-barrel whiskies also tend to be bottled at higher strength.
