I simply love the OB 14 year old Clynelish. I find it by far one of the better reasonably priced, readlily available whiskies out there: beautiful complexity, a lot going in the nose and the glass. Top notch! I would love to get my hand on some of the IB's...

Trying to learn about smell and flavours of Rum. I'm lucky to have an understanding and generous wife. Now I have four bottles which I'm trying once a week each and comparing, learning from and not getting drunk on but rather enjoying tasting and nosing. Thanks Ralfy!

22:00 Totally agree, the fist bit of the bottle is not a good representation of the remainder. This is my complaint with reviews from samples, the reviewer does not have a full experience, you cannot judge a whisky from a sample.
@JimmyLeg
@JimmyLeg 8 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more. If you've ever slowly emptied a bottle you know how much it changes from beginning to end. No way a sample can be useful for reviewing.

Fantastic review as always. I would love to hear you review the differences between this Clynelish 15 and Old Pulteney 17. They are both presently at the top of my personal list.

I tasted this bottle at a Gordon & Macphail tasting two weeks ago. I was surprised by how easily recognizable Clynelish it was. I am still fairly amateurish in the whisky hobby so that was quite thrilling :D I found it very delicious :) Thanks for the review.

Just poured my second dram in two months from my Clynelish 14 and I still hate it. Its going back to the cupboard, way back, for another year at least. Maybe in due course, I will learn to appreciate Ralfys tastebuds. On the other hand, Aberlour 12 is wonderfull, which I found out after vlog 610, where I scurried down to a local supermarket on its last day on sale :)

I got 2 mc ribs and all i could think of is how ralfy would review them...... Meat, 95% Tasteless, 1% hint of pork rib once in a while, equal to a bad tv dinner, bbq sauce watered down, worse then the softdrinks.. Bread , soft, fluffy, no taste, overpowered by watered down bbq sauce.. Finished them and never again, Definitely a beginners rib...

I do get what you're saying about online reviews. I was given a bottle of Laphroig PX cask. The Laphroig purists online were scathing! If I had taken on board their comments I would have given the bottle away. Instead, I decided to try it. And while it's not my favourite whiskey (Clynelish is however) I like it. It has sophistication that goes beyond the usual Laphroig experience. (Ralfy quote here) "In my opinion".

Thanks for the info Jason. Do you know if the sherry notes mask the twiggy peat at all?
@JasonDebly
@JasonDebly 8 жыл бұрын
From my experience, HP 18 does have a peat component to it. Certainly not on the scale of the typical Islay, but nevertheless, there is peat and some heather notes intermingled with the sherry, marzipan and velvety toffee. It's very fine malt. You should try!

I tried Clynelish 14 yo when I was in Scotland this year. I had never heard of it, of course coming from the US south. I found it rather thin and lacking character, couldn't wait to finish the small bottle and get on to some Talisker! Just my opinion malt mate.

Interesting Ralfy - your statement that the standard bottling of the 14 year old was over processed. And yet later on (review 634) - you give the standard bottling of the 14 year old a 91 malt mark and praise to Diageo for their efforts. Question : was this a change in your palate ? or did they improve it?

Hi Ralphy, we need your help mate. We make an unaged white whisky/moonshine. We get it contract distilled and the distiller has gone awol and we need to know why it tastes the way it does. It's really smooth and unpeated and would love to send you a bottle to see if you can help us guess it's recipe. Strange request I know. How can we get you a bottle?

Hi, love your channel. When you do a review on old whisky releases then do a new release of the same whisky. Is it the whisky that's changed or is it your taste buds that have changed with age. Its something that has been bugging me for a couple of years. It just that I hated some whisky 10 yo ago but now like Very much and the ones I liked 10 years ago don't enjoy as much. Cheers Dave

I'll be honest: That much water everytime? Not for me. Once or twice,sure. Always, if all I'd do was smelling it, yes. But on the palate I just miss the lack of alcoholic intensity. I'd rather go 1-2 tsp

Ralfy adds more water than I would too and his palate is way different than mine. That's part of what makes whisky fascinating to me.

Well your remarks about not telling anyone what they should be tasting is good advice but what do you do about someone who says "it tastes like whisky". Do you tell them not to bother with single malts and stick to blends or do you try and suggest that they try and identify flavours such as sweetness, bitterness, saltiness, savouriness or sourness? Then perhaps ask them if they can identify a particular mouth feel? Watery, oily, porridgey, fruit juicy..? I see too many buyers in my local shop going for the really expensive premium blends in the fancy boxes costing twice as much as a descent single malt because they say that all whisky tastes the same and it's just a matter of prestige, price and packaging. I once spent 15 minutes talking to someone about how wonderful the Kilchoman 100% Islay was and the whole story behind it, only to see him pick up a bottle of Johnie Walker Gold/Blue....and head for the counter.

I think you have to let people know what you know, if they're interested, and then let them be. Most of my friends are white rum and coke drinkers and I've attempted many times to lead them down the path to quality spirits enjoyed without soda. 99% of the time it doesn't happen. However once in a while you'll see someone GET IT. That's a great moment.

Its a good point, a lot of my friends are happy to add coke etc to their spirits and give me strange looks when I have my whisky straight as they just tend to think all whisky is like Bell's. I was out last year on the pish with a pal, and towards the end of the night I ordered an Ardbeg 10, and my mate wanted to try it, to which I said he wouldn't like something like that hitting him when he has no whisky experience. Anyway he ordered one, gave a funny look as if it was poison when he sampled it, later telling me I had put him off whisky altogether, and then ordered a Morgan's and coke. :D
