Yesterday, I made a blend of the Jim Beam and the Jack Daniels, the standards. As many people here in denmark compares these 2, and calls them "the absolute same whiskey"..... they couldn't be more wrong! But I made a magnificent blend, were the best from each whiskeys turned up, and the banana notes got even better! You should try this... FOR SCIENCE!

Whats up guys. Love whiskey and love the channel. Ive always had whiskey with a bit of soda, but since watching this channel ive been trying more and more to drink whiskey neat. Recently ive bought a bottle of Glenfiddich 12, Monkey Shoulder, and good old Wild Turkey 101. Im still fairly new at drinking it neat, so my question to you is this. The more often i drink it, will it become less and less harsh? Is it kind of an acquired taste? I can taste some of the flavor notes but more often than not i notice more alcohol burn than anything.

In one of the episodes you did with The Modern Rogue, you mentioned one whiskey (Henry McKenna Bourbon, I think?) that you said was WAY under-priced for how good it was. After comparing the Stranahan's Diamond Peak favorably with the Glenfarclas 40 this episode (I think those two little samples of the Glenfarclas probably cost more than the entire full-size bottle of Diamond Peak!), it made me wonder: Do you have a list of whisk[e]ys that you consider "values," not just because they're low-priced, but in that they deliver an AMAZING bang for the buck?

Thanks! My job situation is up in the air for the near future, and I just finished off my bottles of both Scotch and Irish whiskies. (I still have some Bulleit Rye and Buffalo Trace Bourbon to tide me over, though), so my bar-budget has to be spent wisely! Otherwise, I'm most DEFINITELY a 'Quality over Quantity' kind of guy.

Love the show! And this thousand dollar bottle sounds amazing. I'll have to skip vacation one year, and spring for it. I'm more of a wine person, but I love my scotch. Laphroaig is my favorite so far, I love Laphroaig Cairdeas, and I'm diggin' the quarter cask I recently purchased, but my heart belongs to cairdeas. The last 3 times I ordered Laphroaig, I got it for free... I frequent a wine and spirits bar in Appleton, WI, and they just like me there, and one time (at a place I don't frequent) the guy behind the bar had no idea what I was saying to him when I ordered a single Laphroaig neat (they had the 10 year, which I actually prefer over the 18), I had to literally point the bottle out to him... maybe he was new, still I don't think he knew how to ring it up, so I wasn't charged. I appreciate that the education is out there, and you guys keep it fun. It's on my bucket list to make it down for a visit and enjoy whisk(e)y/scotch/maybe bourbon with you all. May your spirits always be shared with friends! Cheers!

Love Diamond Peak. Bought a bottle while I was out there a few months ago on a work trip, being as you can't find it here in VA. The tour wasn't anything life altering, but I really like the 100% malt aged in new oak barrels. To me, it's the perfect blend of Scotch style flavor (100% malt in used barrels) and Bourbon style spikiness (Corn/etc in new oak barrels). IIRC, the Diamond Peak is the same as their yellow label, but aged for 4 years instead of 2, and definitely worth the bump in price.

Recent subscriber here. Your channel rocks! You've inspired me to try a bunch of new Whiskys. Recently I even bought a bottle of Octomore (nectar of the gods). I do have a question, are there any blended whiskys that can give single malts a run for their money? I have a friend who insists that all single malts are better than blended whiskys, specially those from Islay. I have a feeling that this may be a very reductive view of blended whisky. Is there a blended whiskey that you'd recommend to help me win this argument?

I like the way you got started with a lot of dual pour comparisons. I've started doing this as a new "thing" for me. It's possible that you (Daniel) were teaching Rex at first so you would pour two and contrast the choices. As Rex has become more experienced you seem to have slowed this comparative process. I'm wondering if it's because you're shooting a batch of shows, so possibly you would tend to pour less, knowing that in a few minutes you start over, then repeat, repeat. What do you think? Cheers!

Congrats on 31k subs and 200+ episodes! Loved the tour last episode and came home tonight seeing you guys trying Stranahan's Diamond Peak! As I sit here nosing it as well. The distillery is 5 minutes from my house and we ALWAYS keep a couple bottles around ;)I would love to see you guys do a review of Stranahan's Snowflake. Only on sale 1 day a year and only from the distillery itself. It is absolutely amazing. Similar style to Dalmore KA3 as in Rob finishes in multiple different barrels of all kinds. It is out of this world. I enjoy Dalmore, but LOVE Snowflake ;)

Whenever I'm drinking the good stuff I use a brandy snifter. That's a glass designed to give you all the nose too. I got some Glencairn glasses recently but I'm not sure they're an improvement. Except maybe that, being narrower, it's easier to estimate the size of a pour.

When I drink whiskey, I can not find the flavors in the tasting note that anyone provides, I just taste a different type of whiskey from one bottle to the next... however I will come across foods and smells that make me think of whiskey. Most recently an umbrella that was once used by a camp fire and fresh cantaloupe. I’ll then return to the whiskey searching for those flavors, and just find whiskey again... smooth, rich, robust, light, etc. are words I would use to describe what I taste (all words that are subjective). I never find flavors of other foods you gentlemen often use to describe what you’re tasting . Do you have any tip on tasting?!?!? I plan on practicing A LOT!!! Does this question even make sense? Enjoy the videos, thanks again.

Help! I recently took a couple week break from all whiskey. I felt like my pallet was becoming overloaded and flavors were all blurring together. When I returned, the first glass I had was Four Roses Single Barrel, one of my favorite bourbons. However something odd happened. It was like my pallet was overwhelmed by the seemingly dense flavor. It was harsh and spikey and vastly different that I remember. It was almost like the first drink of whiskey I had when I was 15 years old. Has my pallet changed or will once I start drinking more whiskey again will it recalibrate? This is really weird because I have always loved more and more complex whiskies and the complexity it brought for a bourbon is the reason I love(d) Four Roses Single Barrel so much. Love the show and keep it up!

What are your thoughts on the large number of brands dropping age statements from their whiskies? You've said before we're living in the golden age of whiskey, but the dropping of so many age statements is a little unsettling. I was really sad to find out recently that Highland Park is replacing the 15 and 18yo with NAS bottlings. Does this mean distilleries are running out of old stock? And will it lead to a drop in overall quality?
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
I think it means two things. 1. they're definitely running low on stocks, and 2. they're no longer limiting themselves to age in order to create something magical. I think NAS is awesome. What it means in every case that I've experienced is the ability for master distillers and blenders to no longer be limited to created age focused whisky and instead open the gates to exploring the possibilities. the last few years have resulted in the 2 best NAS whisky I've ever tried and both became my favorite of that line. Ardbeg Dark Cove and Laphroaig Lore.
@charlieghague7 жыл бұрын
Whiskey Vault I agree. NAS bottlings can be, and are, amazing whiskies. There are countless examples of that. My gripe is the taking away of age statements from core lineups. Like Highland Park, for example, has always had 3 extremely magical age statement expressions and tons of NAS limited editions based off those. I'm totally down with that but I'd like to see the age statement bottlings in core ranges stay intact.
@UnboundOdysseus7 жыл бұрын
NAS is not a type of whisky; it’s a type of label. Age affects whisky. Older is different; not better, not worse, different. One of the things that has lead to the NAS phenomenon (other than running low on stocks) is the fact that the Scottish Whisky Regulations only permit the disclosure of the youngest component whisky. So if a particular whisky expression is 10% 8 Year Old (by volume), 50% 20 Year Old and 40% 35 Year Old stock, it can only be labeled as an 8 Year Old. This might put some people off. Maybe. There are great NAS whiskies (Laphroaig Quarter Cask, Ardbeg Uigeadail) and there are some which have been incredibly overpriced and very mediocre (Macallan Gold, Macallan Amber). I’d like to know what I’m drinking in as much detail as possible (age of all component whiskies, cask types etc.) but it doesn’t look like that will happen any time soon. Trial and error seem to be the only way...

Daniel, you have mentioned in the past that people are trying all sorts of things to fast age alcohol, is anyone trying to limit the Angel's portion with new barrel designs? A distillery put out a promotional fact sheet about how many bottles were coming out verses last year and also how much was lost due to evaporation, in some instances it was over fifty percent loss. What effect would a regular barrel with half encased in a stainless steel sleeve be on evaporation, taste, etc?
@Holcombi7 жыл бұрын
Instead of using stainless steel glass would be a better option as to not impart a metallic flavour to the water of life.
@WhiskyCardinalWes7 жыл бұрын
A glass sleeve will break the first time the barrel is laid on it's side and moved. The stainless steel would have no direct contact with the whiskey, it's a sleeve, not an insert which would prevent the whiskey from fully coming into contact with the wood. My question about taste was, if only half of the barrel was exposed to the air thus limiting direct barrel to atmosphere evaporation would it impart 'age' slower? Faster,? since less whiskey would evaporate and has more fluid contact?
@WhiskeyVault7 жыл бұрын
There's a barrel maker advertising this exact thing right now. Metal barrel with wood stave inserts and heads that can be "replaced" as needed. Not sure what the impact is.

This is SUPER hotly debated in the home distilling world too. One faction says that the angels share carries away some of the more undesirable parts of fresh whisky. Others disagree and that it is, as you say, just a loss. And just the way its always been. Interestingly enough a guy started making "barrels" by adding an oak lid to a stainless pot. This helped recreate the surface area to volume of a real barrel at a manageable volume for home distillers. Wonder if that's where the idea came from? Sounds similar! Honestly, I expect hobbiests to contribute more and more to the commercial world in coming years. It certainly happend in the craft beer world!

The case price is listed at $3119.85... how many bottles would be in a case? I would imagine it's more than 3... (google says 12, but then each bottle would be $260)

Apparently the best Glenfarclas is their 15YO as per @maltman_mike series on Glenfarclas malts. Check him out on KZbin or tweet him. Great bloke full of advice on all things Scotch.

Boys, do you think a little water would have changed your impressions of the 40 yr old? I’ve seen you do it in the past with whiskies that left you hanging. Maybe a follow up video is in order?

It's very possible!

Pewdiepie started with Laphroaig & continued to less intense whiskeys. How could he taste them properly after that? He didn't even use water. MOM! The funny KZbin man didn't do it correctly! Please make a pewdiebait video about it! I love you guys

Glenfarclas 40 deserved 15 mins in glass to open up prior to sipping. A straight pour-n-sip is going to yield less interesting smell and taste.
