Give me the Deanston 12 or Teapot dram any day! I have yet to try (or even find) GlenDronach 15... Indeed that was a great day at Glengoyne and Deanston.

Deanston had a poor reputation until the change around a few years ago. I got the 12 with all the noise and liked it enough to get a second bottle by which time I began to think it was meh. I haven't bothered with anything else and the increasingly expensive bottlings, implying a superior whisky, are annoying. Your explanation regarding the smokiness about this one seems quite plausible. I'm afraid the profile you describe occurs more and more with a lot of independent bottles these days. Once you veer from the safety of ex-bourbon all manner stuff appears. Sherry seasoned single casks are risky. Good review as always.

The only Deanston I have tried so far is the official 12 yo and absolutely love it :) The 18 yo is definitely on my wishlist but It sells for at least 96-97 euro where I live which is quite pricey so I'll wait for a special sale. There are also some independent bottles available around here, mainly from SV and Douglas Laing, but they are all young (8-11 yo) and seem pretty generic to me so I'm not convinced they'd be any better than the 12 yo official bottling.
