My old apartment had a door that was attached to the apartment beside me. I was freaked out at first for awhile, even having dreams of someone coming through the door to harm me. I ended up meeting the neighbor on the other side of the door later on and he actually was a really cool guy lol so I wasn’t scared after that.

Just over 20 years ago, I was selling one house, buying another, and travelling a lot for work, all at once, so I took out a six month lease on this small flat for convenience. It had been empty, I had been told, for about 3 months or so, but the previous tenant had been evicted (after being arrested) because he'd been a drug trafficker and used the place as a meeting spot for his deals. About the 3rd or 4th night I stayed there, two guys rocked up to the door at about 10pm looking for the previous tenant. I could tell they didn't believe me when I said I was the new occupier and that the last guy was hadn't been there for months. Over the course of my 6 month tenancy, several other people came looking for him, multiple times each, and those first two guys came back maybe 3 or 4 times, too. The place was broken into once, around my 5th month there, with almost everything moved around, but with nothing stolen or damaged. The 3rd story reminded me of this period of my life, as you never can always tell who used to live somewhere before you did.

I think its completely reasonable. you might be able to avoid a confrontation, you don't know what the guy entering your house is capable of. even if you are the better fighter, they might have a knife, or in some countries a gun. sure if they come right at you at full speed, maybe you fight, but if you can avoid it thats what you should do

I use to live in a shared student house which was split into 3 levels, the ground floor had three entry ways, one was the main entrance which opened to a staircase which went upstairs one floor to the main living area, and on the other side had another flight of stairs going down to what we called our ‘basement’ which had a shower room, a bathroom, our laundry room, and the other two doors going to our garden. In the basement hallway we had another door which we weren’t able to open, but it had a door handle, it was connected to the take away we lived above, and sometimes the handle would of fallen off and we would hear noises coming from the door; we always joked saying maybe the take away people would break into our house one day, and how they probably hid bodies in that room, but they were nice guys and we shared a garden with them for a while

If you are living in a flat with a connecting door, there are two simple things you can do, neither of which involves f'n around with tools. 1) Leave the key in the lock on your side, if the people on the other side haven't already done this (you can't put a key in both sides of a standard mortice lock at the same time). If you are unable to leave the key in full time on your side, for whatever reason, then get a couple of small wooden wedges and use them to wedge the door at the bottom. This is assuming the door opens inwards into your flat, of course. If it doesn't open into your's, skip the wedges. 2) Put a bookcase in front of the door. This both blocks the door AND will help you forget that the door is even there.

At least your neighbor will know that you have a good lock. Just because someone is restless and can't sleep doesn't mean he's creepy.

The last story is kinda weird, as in probably fake. It happens the day of moving in, the house is empty, and there's a storage container full of the OP's shit in the driveway that apparently didn't get raided? You'd think if they were casing the house prior, they would know that it was vacant and that all the valuables were outside in the shipping container. And if their intentions were otherwise, they would have done something with OP when they were passed out. So why bother walking around a totally empty house then? For the fuck of it? I don't buy it. The first story vaguely reminds me of this house a chick I dated briefly lived in with 2 roomies. Her corner room had this massive "front door" to this old house, way bigger & thicker of a door than normal, that they never used. They had a side/rear entrance that was the primary entrance. The other weird thing about it was that her wall to the left of the unused door was a temporary partition. Kinda like the stuff I remember they had for like the high school cafe or gym. I recall they had a huge house party one time and the partition was pulled back, making her room & the main living area this huge open floor plan. Weird place that was, real shitty area too.
