Those of us who are homesteaders have an opportunity to be the cheerleaders for folks who are considering our way of life. There is no better feeling than when someone you have encouraged to start growing a garden comes back to you and excitedly tells you about their first garden. Congratulations on having 60,000 viewers you have been lovingly cheering on.

I truly feel what you are talking about is the very backbone of what America is supposed to (used to) stand for! The FREEDOM to maintain yourself. the FREEDOM to live that life style that works best for you. the FREEDOM to fail at it and find something better. the FREEDOM to protect yourself. FREEDOM

You don´t have to have animals, We do not want to be tied to our home in this part of our lives and I have had alot of problems with wanting to know where my food comes from and be self sufficience BUT I realised that buying my eggs, meat and dairy product from a farm close by in our village is enough and I can grow our own veggies and this means We can leave easily to see family for several days without a problem and still eat good food that we know all about :)

Im in Australia, since the last 2 yrs and people wanting to be more self sufficient even in suburbia, the local councils are now putting in so many restrictions on backyard animal keeping, that they are sending "authorised officers" who are able to inspect your property without a warrant for any reason. In one state, the councils have even banned roadside farmers stalls, labelling them as a danger to the public. In Victoria one of the most locked down states in the world in 2020/21 they even closed down all the farmers markets and we had a 5km radius of movement, they even shut down the playgrounds. Its absolutely disgusting the lengths the government agencies are now going to, to stop any form of self reliance and movement away from relying on the big corporation food suppliers.

There is nothing better than shopping in my own garden for my supper plus grabbing our own meat out of the freezer. It is so nice not to have to remember to buy eggs from the store. At least I know my eggs are fresh. First time starting my own plants this past March and learning to can my tomatoes and making salsa this fall has been a fun experiment.

I am not fearful, however, I do see the ways of the world and I feel like it's part of me being in the world but not of it by learning to be self sufficient. Striving to not get too comfortable with "the norm". Would I be able to put food on the table if I weren't able to go to the store or if the store doesnt have food for whatever reason? Not fearful, just would rather be educated and prepared and would rather have it and not need it than visa versa. It humbles me to grow my own food and has taught me to be mindful of and appreciate what I eat. I love you Jill but I just want to be clear that not all preppers are fearful, but mindful. You believe and you know there will be trials and tribulations. We do not have to live in fear, however, those of us who have been warned I feel have this yearning in our hearts for a reason. Your right, not to be fearful, but to be prepared.

Cheers to you Jill. I've become so very tired of all the fear mongering, 'prepping for the end of the world', etc. Not everyone can be 100% self-sufficient, and they need to supplement what they are able to provide for themselves with the excess that others sell. It's a great relationship that builds community.

Hey Jill, Thank you for putting this video out and if I may say something on this topic. ... "Yes!! there are far too many others here on KZbin putting fear and labels to those who live in Cities, those who do not know how or even where to start. I have heard people saying too that they do not want city people moving out into their areas. But honestly... how would we expect people from cities to make better life changes for self sufficiency, if we do not embrace them, guide them or encourage them to do better right? I love that you put it out simply as a thing we should all want to do better, no matter who the person is. As of lately our area here too in Northern Maine...we're getting more folks moving up from cities and relocating, but they are doing it and hopefully they will go full gusto and grow gardens and do more. I can only hope and pray. I'll honestly only ever complain when they buy acres of land to only have green grass. I will never ever understand how anyone can own so much land and not grow food or have animals. I love your Channel and the awesome way you encourage others to do better. You are a true blessing 🌻

Self-sufficient means you don't need outside help. Most "preppers" store up supplies incase of calamity or shtf. I say they are preparing for the collapse of the system by being dependent on the system! But most people talking about self-sufficiency only talk about growing food. What about the gardening tools? clothes? cutlery? pot and pans? cooking from scratch? etc. Any of the "useful crafts" are part of self sufficiency. WRT sustainable, that depends on the rate of use of resources. The biggest keys to "sustainable" is knowing when we have enough and restoring what we take from nature.

Ive had family members who had a farm in the midwest and I spent summers there. I loved it eventhough it was hard. I live in a small house in a desert city now with a church right behind me. I have a very small backyard but I got a few baby chicks, herbs and veggies. I havent had to buy herbs or veggies since Spring. I love going out back and picking my food and coming inside to cook it.

I have about 360 sq ft for our sunny veg garden. We are in the city however we’re fortunate to have 2 lots. We have a separate herb garden and a partial shade area on the west side of our house as well. I watch you and Jess (Roots and Refuge), so in the spring we are going to add maybe 3 cattle panels hooped to trellis beans, cucumbers and maybe zucchini or something. I’m really looking forward to next year’s growing season. We are in Northern Illinois so our growing season will end in a couple weeks. I tried a few fall crops but I’m not having the greatest luck with it. I’m also learning to compost!!
