An historic conversation between Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg and National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden, moderated by the award-winning journalist and host of Democracy Now! Amy Goodman.
Presented as part of “Truth, Dissent, & the Legacy of Daniel Ellsberg: A 50th Anniversary Conference Commemorating the Release of the Pentagon Papers” by the University of Massachusetts Amherst with The GroundTruth Project on April 30, and May 1, 2021.
This conference was collectively organized by the UMass Amherst Departments of History and Journalism; Special Collections and University Archives, UMass Amherst Libraries; the UMass Amherst College of Humanities and Fine Arts; and The GroundTruth Project, with generous support from the Office of the Chancellor.
The conference is one component of a larger initiative called The Ellsberg Archive Project, a website exploring the life and legacy of Daniel Ellsberg that incorporates archival material, student analysis, and The GroundTruth Project podcast, The Whistleblower. The site will also host recordings of conference sessions. To view the site visit www.umass.edu/...

In the ancient world, war was a predominantly political phenomenon. In the modern world, war is the continuation of the economy by other means. That aspect of the USA "way of living and killing" has not changed. Quite the contrary, in the decades that separate the actions of DanielEllsberg and Edward Snowden this has worsened. This is an important fact that needs to be noted and commented on.

@@donaldmjordan How would you change it? I have had this conversation many times with folks that would agree with you, but they really have no idea how to go about "it?"! And why do some folks get "it?" and others don't? The rate of change of "what" is happening now in the Anthropocene is beyond belief and the Biome is basically finished and the inept Political Process has no way of keeping up with it even with all the Technology. The exponential function most humans in the Western World have a handle on is Compound Interest on their Money printed out of thin air! Not the exponential collapse of all life on earth. I got a giggle out of Mr. Ellsberg's comment at the end of the video when he states ~ "At least now I can fulfill my Retirement Dream of Retiring in SuperMax"! SAD!!! But, this is what it takes to stand up for and defend the First Amendment! I have felt this way for a long time. And just as he honestly states, "you need to choose your battles wisely". What does that mean exactly? “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” ― Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from the Birmingham Jail "The right to speak freely and to promote diversity of ideas and programs is therefore one of the chief distinctions that sets us apart from totalitarian regimes." TERMINIELLO v. CHICAGO ~ SCOTUS 1949 The two worst things from my research that have happened to the First Amendment is the Espionage Act of 1917 and the 1942 "Fighting Words" Doctrine. Words not Rounds! Thank you for this presentation and interview with two True Great American Heroes and their selfless devotion to truth!

I would work for the CIA, but I have been critical of some of the screw ups, but in general I think they are important and the level they work at is above but just as critical as local politics. The "establishment" and the CIA work in a world of changing the future, and I think that even though the Iraq/Afghanistan wars were a problematic mess, that area of the world in the long term will be much better off than as an Islamic Caliphate super -power, and so will the rest of the world be better off.

"you need to choose your battles wisely". What does that mean exactly? " Metaphorically, don't take a bullet over someone stealing a chocolate bar. However, turning a "blind eye" to far too many things and the things being "blind eye"'d only get bigger and bigger.
