St Mary's Church is actually older than the Abbey, and unusually preserves an eighteenth-century interior, with box pews. The wealthy could hire these out, and the pew rents were a useful source of income for the church. And don't forget Lewis Carroll! He also stayed in Whitby, and the poem 'The Walrus and the Carpenter' was inspired by the beaches. 'Such quantities of sand'...
