Up to 0:53 - 100%. In 16+ years of training I've never understood why people clinch/fight hard from the knees. It has no bearing on anything and half the time you are trying not to cheat by standing up or dealing with someone who stands up. Either do specific sparring, pull guard, or do a light grapple until you find a legitimate position to switch up the power. It should be like the grappling version of tossing a coin. Thank you for the video!

Knee tap is great too. I usually ask them why they NEVER work from their back. They look at me confused quite a bit.

I’m a white belt at a Relson Gracie academy and we almost always start our rolls either sitting or on knees…not really sure why but pulling guard is not a bad option to work on defense. Thx !

Dude, easiest takedown "from the knees": Step 1, stand up. Step 2, do any takedown against the person who is now literally half your height.

Great concept that applies to many different positions.

I agree that takedowns from that position are not very wrestling friendly......if you want to work on your takedowns its not from that position....that's definitely something derived from BJJ.....that being said, its important to understand that starting in that position is to get into a grappling flow, not to work on takedowns.....I used that kind of thing (starting position) as a way to work on my wrist and ankle grips and sweeps, usually baiting into butterfly guard type of stuff.....I think that ppl need to understand that starting from the knees is a training method, not a fighting technique.....takedowns are a stand up technique, not a ground technique.....takedowns are guilty by association since groundfighters are good at them and other "standup" fighters are not

Thank you for this. I'm going to work this next time I roll. We don't train takedowns at all at my gym

tookurjaerbs wowww I never heard that at all. I'm tall n kina quick for my weight so takedowns help me alot mainly for getting and keeping side control

Question: I have heard that starting on the knees is good for beginners as it is safer for newbies and allows them to concentrate more on the jiujitsu and less on the takedown aspects. What is your opinion on that? thanks
@Chewjitsu8 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I understand the purpose. You minimize the risk of damage from takedowns. But the problem is that a lot of times white belts who don't know takedowns and don't feel comfortable on their backs will do this ugly wrestling from the knees and waste time during a round of training. With new people I start them in guard doing situational rounds. Meanwhile we teach takedowns every week. Overtime we introduce them to Full Rolls and eventually let them go from the feet.

That sounds like a great idea :)

I think you might be talking past each other... "starting on the knees" usually just means "starting not-standing" and one person is supposed to sit down or pull guard immediately. You assume roles to play and it's kind of a negotiation process. Since it's not starting from standing, it makes sense that people say it focuses on jiu-jitsu rather than takedowns. But when both people are on their knees and trying to muscle a takedown, that's... neither BJJ nor stand-up grappling; it's just a weird game.

it gets boring starting from the knees cos everyone's got their routine if you train in a 10 person group I always pull guard cos my guard sux

Yeah.. but when ur just starting, u really dont know that much anyway, so pulling guard will get u in a lot of trouble.. and im talking about "4th time goin to the gym" starting, so tnx for the video.. at least i have 1 additional knowledge on takedown from the knees.. Its so hard breathing when ur at the bottom..

Actually. Pulling guard is a great strategy for newer people. Guard is a tight, close position that negates a lot of movement.

Whats your opinion on pulling guard? I see a lot of post and hear a lot of things about pulling guard being a bad thing. Im really comfortable in guard. I like it there. Should I be worried about pulling it or say fuck it and do it?

Pulling guard is a great option. Just be ready to attack once you get there.

as a female rolling with all guys, I like to pull instead of push(they can easily put me down really)surprisingly that works so well, half of the times they'll end up in a triangle immediately since they're not expecting.

Maybe you have already covered this. But what is a safe way to keep someone still while in side control? They keep sliding around on there back.
@Chewjitsu8 жыл бұрын
So Joseph are you just asking how to keeping them locked in place but also do so in a controlled way that won't hurt them. For example, locking your squirmy training partners down without hurting their neck or something?
@josephorsak39708 жыл бұрын
What I mean by "safe way" is keep myself from becoming vulnerable. I don't want to hurt anyone just don't want to open myself up for an attack. I hope this is more clear.

Joseph Orsak I'm no expert but plenty of chest pressure and or change holds
@MatthewElliott7 жыл бұрын
Yeah chest pressure exactly, but most importantly control the head, turn the neck and you got control. If he won't let you go north South and try choke
@pb93057 жыл бұрын
CraneCrews com I do Japanese jiu jitsu so these names might sound weird I normally go for a scarf hold into side control then to the north south position into ushiro kesa (sorry don't know the English for that) then to Yoko shiho gatame it's kinda like a side control but you've swept there far arm across their neck ends up in a fantastic choke one you lock hands then you can mount of you like with the choke on. that combo works a treat on people with 0 experience every time cos your hitting 5 holds in a couple of seconds it is very disorientating

Why even teach kneeling takedowns unless you're fighting a little person or a child. I never understood that. Takedowns done from standing. Anytime you roll on he ground some top and bottom position should be assumed cause that's where you end up after takedown.
