Get ready for Final 27 of the X-Points MTG 93/94 Monthly. In this match we see Wrath of the Machines take on Thrull Rack. Wrath of the Machines is a mono white control deck that aims to control the board with removal, such as a playset of Wrath of Gods and Swords to Plowshares. It wants to get card advantage with 4 Jayemdae Tome and take the win from there. The Thrull Rack's strategy is a slightly more aggressive one. It wants to numb the opponent through discard spells like Hymn to Tourach. At the same time it uses land removal, and powerful creatures such as Hypnotic Specter and Sedge Troll to put pressure on the opposing wizard. Once all the cards are out of the hand, The Racks find their way on the battlefield and start dealing damage.
Decks: Mono White, War of the Machines vs Black/Red, Thrull Rack
Players: William vs Nicolai

Omg that Jade Statue figure on the first deck tech is awesome! As cool as the decks are on this channel that might be the coolest I’ve seen

That poor assembly worker, did all that work to get employee of the month just to fall into a giant hole on his way to his car after a long shift.

Answering the question from the deck tech section, you do see some creatureless decks do well in X-point from time to time, but generally they don't win it all. Other close versions of William's deck have done pretty well in X-point, making it to the top 4 in past monthlies. Good games and congrats to the winner! (No spoilers)

I guess most combo decks need the full power to make it really work and go fast enough to cope with early creature threats. One of the best combo decks in Swedish is Twiddle Vault and that really benefits from power. Other options are Land Tax and Tax Edge based decks, but land tax has been taxed :D although with 2 points... Anyway, always interesting to see differences between formats.

Neither here nor there, but the only time I ever saw Jade Statue played in 94-96 is when this one guy played it. He was the best deckbuilder of all time as back then, he was responsible for so many cards getting onto the Restricted/Banned list, not counting the cards that were ante/Sha-zad, or the prematurely Restricted cards that came off the list shortly afterward (Dingus Egg, Sword Of Ages, Icy Manipulator, Gauntlet, Oriflamme, etc.) The ones that got Restricted and stayed Restricted until they were banned, he was responsible for like 2/3rds of that list. I played him with my extremely fast Mono Black, this was after Fallen Empires (after Ice Age too but definitely before Alliances) and Type 1/2 were established. He was running 4x Jade Statue and 4x Mishra's Factory, both of which puzzled me at first but I guessed his strategy. His MO was to take a card that "everyone" thought was bad and got it put on the Restricted List. I beat him up and down the block with my deck but I saw the huge potential in his deck. First thing I did was get rid of the 4 statues and the 4 factories, lol. I added 4 The Rack and experimented for a while until I settled for 8 bolts, 4 Dark Rituals, 4 Chains Of Mephistopheles ($12-15 bucks each, hehe) and other fast cards plus some of but not all of the normal staples. All 5 moxes of course and Lotus but, despite splashing blue, neither Ancestral Recall nor Timetwister! No Wheel either. I killed with The Rack, 4x plus a Copy Artifact. 5 colors, WRB splash UG. His deck? 4x Balance. Once I got it to work, I won several huge tournaments with it (hundreds of entrants). Gameplan was simple, instead of derdling around with Factory and Statue, I locked the game with Balance and The Rack (hopefully more than 1) by emptying my hand, Balance-ing, waiting a few turns and then Balance again. Unless the opponent just happened to be playing with The Rack themselves, or something silly like mainboard Karma, they just got wrecked. Insane how Balance made it into 4th Edition and was playable 4x in both Type 1 and Type 2... Re: the rest of the tournament: I lost the Type 1 in the Finals but I won the Type 2 Finals. My same black deck against (I just subbed Black Lotus and Mox Jet out a Swamp and something else. I also faced the same guy and same deck in both Finals. He won handily in the Type 1 with Millstone running The Abyss and Moat but I destroyed him in Type 2 as he had to make a lot of swap outs to qualify for T2, going for UW control with Angels as win cons. This tournament was one of the first run as Swiss. All the previous tournaments at that time, both for Constructed and Limited, were single elimination.

Atog says “sacrifice an artifact : Atog gets +2/+2 until end of turn”, while with Guardian Beast, if untapped, your non-creature artifacts cannot be further enchanted, destroyed or taken under someone else’s control, so they can still be sacrificed.
