I'm a 40-year-old white guy and always got those 15 minute haircuts this dude was talking about for $12. Then, I stepped into a real barber shop a couple years ago and have never looked back. I now pay $30 for a 60 minute haircut. There is no comparison. My shop is multi-ethnic: latino, asian, black and white. It does feel like home in there. We're all just in there being people. I've never heard anything but respect to and from everyone.

This was years ago, but I used to be literally the only white guy in the neighborhood I moved to, and the first time I went to the barber, there were like 6 guys in there, so I went over to wait my turn, but before I could sit down, the barber said 'yer up'. I figured they just wanted to get me out of there quick, but it was good conversation so I went back in 4 weeks, and there were the same 6 dudes in there! Long story short, I ended up hanging out there after work most days to play checkers and argue about the Lions. White barber shops aren't part of the community like that.

Shaq - white guy here I’ve been subscribed for a minute. My first black barber experience changed my life. I had just gotten a cut and one of my black friends started trashing me he said ain’t no way we going to bar with you looking like that. He made a call and told me go here and ask for “Ski” the moment I walked in he says Damn Troy wasn’t lying. He says what do you want I told him and he says aight imma shadow fade this. No lie the cut warm towel changed my life. Ski the barber has been my friend ever since.

It changed my life! I have to wear a scrub cap in surgery and I kept telling my “white barber” that my sides are too thick and I need the back pushed up a 1 1/2 inches, so when I tie my scrub cap it doesn’t come loose midway through surgery from moving. My friend kev put me on to his barber 💈 now remind you, I’m a 6’5 white guy wearing scrubs in the middle of Memphis. The whole barber shop was so loud I could hear it outside.......when I walked in you could hear a ant breathing! An I said umm kev told me to come see you to get a haircut 😐 the barber was like “aight big guy I gotcha sit down” he then proceeds to say “aight so what we doin” I swallow” take a deep breath and begin to tell him. He said “bet” and then said “so imma taper this down on the side so you got more air flow coming into your scrub cap to keep you cool, going to straight razor the back where you tie your scrub cap, then fix your hair on the crown of your head so it isn’t going into the direction of the cap so it stays straight on there.. I was deadass speechless! People in there was filming me on Snapchat, whispering, then this man had a vaccine for the ceiling that when he started to take the longer hair off the top he just hit it with his brush then vacuum it up, then he said “on god don’t move I’m bout to line your back up” I didn’t breath for 5 minutes tell he told me too. Then hit it with the hot towel, baby powder and said “aight bet you good” I didn’t know if I was done with the haircut or if he was asking if I was still alive from not breathing. But my god! My hair never looked so good y’all, I’m telling you! Next day surgery comes and I got this bounce in my step, tie that scrub cap on and boom 12 hrs later I forgot I even had it on, everyone else scratching their head, washing it down with a washcloth, I then told all of surgery to go to my guy “even though I only had one cut he is my guy, idc what anyone says”

When my son was 7 years old, he wanted a specific cut. I took him to the salon I use and he didn’t get the exact cut he wanted. The next time he needed a cut, I looked up barbershops in the area and the most badass photo on an advertisement caught my eye. It was a shop called Fatheadz (Tuscaloosa, Alabama) and the photo was of 4 of the top barbers, dressed in all white, wearing shades, walking down one of the main streets in town. LOVED the photo and they had awesome reviews. I made an appointment with the owner, Jay, who goes by Fat (not a fat dude by any means. He’s PHAT for damn sure though). I take my son to the appointment and it is in an older house that has been renovated in the heart of downtown. Fat looked familiar but I had never met him before. My son got in the chair and immediately Fat started talking with him and truly listens to everything my son said to him. Fat included me in some conversations and made me feel at home. The other barbers spoke whenever they passed by. I didn’t know at this time that what my son wanted was called a comb over fade, Fat taught me the correct name. That was the beginning of a wonderful relationship. We consider Fat as family now. My son won’t let anyone else dare touch his hair and he’s only 9..... been that way since Fat first cut his hair at age 7. After that first time, my son walked out of the barbershop with his chest poked out, and was the first time he’s ever ASKED me to make a photo of him. You couldn’t tell him nothing for days. He kept looking at himself in the mirror on the way home and I asked if he liked his hair cut. He said “no, mom, I don’t like it, I LOVE IT!”. Fat is an amazing barber and an even more amazing man. I’ve learned that he does a LOT specifically for kids and for our town as a whole. He made my son feel like the most important kid in the world while he sat in the barber chair and gave an unbelievable cut. My son forgot he was within hearing distance of me after a recent cut from Fat and I overheard him saying “this cut is badass” 🤪😂🤘🏻 The boy wasn’t wrong ❤️ Black barbershops are the best, hands down. We have the BEST of the best right here in Tuscaloosa, there’s no debate on that 🤘🏻

Last year, I finally decided to donate my hair ive been growing out for a few years; going to salons and having look healthy and all. I went to the same girl who was a high school friend and she has always been taking care of me post high school. She was on maternity leave. I kept hearing about going to a barber shop. So I went to one. Walked in and sit down waiting for my spot. This one barber walked up to me and asked "You most be new to this place, because you didn't dap upon walking in. Imma need you to get your ass out, come back in and dap every G in here." I was blown away, what. So I walk out, wait a few seconds and think should I just go somewhere else? Said f it Ill dap. Walk back in dap, then the guy said "now you can sit, and wait." The dude that said all this to me finished with his dude. Blow dries the chair off, and waves me over. Told him I wanted to donate my hair to people in chemo. Nods, rubber bands the shit in 2 intervals and snips it. Now I just have a raggedy ass hair. He asks if I know what I wanted. Said a simple fade and a scissor top finish. They stop the music and look at me. The whole shop. A simple fade was the wrong answer. Everyone starts shouting things about the white ass mfer and needs to learn the culture. So im on strike 2 at the shop for my first experience. Its been 15 minutes.. He was like, we can do a fade, and scissor finish, but imma work it for you. 45 minutes later after bullshitting and talking about every damn near thing, I get asked about my music choice. They said if you can give a song that's fire and we vibe to it, when you come in you can add a song. Jinjer Pisces. They get some metal when I come in, and no one minds! Bro so fresh after that cut. I havent went anywhere else, and love the culture. Best haircuts and only see my G. Love it!

I'm from a small farm community in Indiana. I went to Queens for a week. My last day there I needed a haircut before heading to Vermont for a wedding. My gps took me to the closest shop. It was 100% Dominican. There was a bit of a language barrier, thery handed me a poster with like 57 cuts on it. I said #43. I got the thumbs up. I was in that chair for an hour. I would've been there longer, but I called it quits when he pulled out the straight razor to line me up. Best haircut of my life tho. And some street tacos right outside the door.

I’m laughing… From northern Kentucky, Covington…I had my first haircut by a black barber in 2018 he was surprised I was a former skinhead and he was so cool and spiilffed me up looking illists and young again! He was impressed that had had faith and respect for him to do his job trusting him. Sadly his shop closed down due to Covid lockdown last year… I miss that guy big time. He was a very respectable guy! I wish he was my personal barber for life. Black barbers 💈 are incredible & talented people and you can share your life with and they keep it with them and no one else… as well give you great advices their parents m/grandparents or their barber trainers ave passed down to them about life. It’s incredible experience.

Where Im from in England we always called them hairdressers. There were hardly any male shops we were getting our hair cut next to a 70 year old woman getting her hair permed. But now barbershops are more common thanks to a boom in Turkish migrants. They have barbershops are all over. They specialise in fades and those shave lines. Theres English places too. We also dont call them barbershops we call them barbers. I dont know why Im telling you all this haha. I've noticed Canadians share a lot of words with us Brits. I've heard Americans mocking Canadians for some of the phrases they differ in and thought "yeah we say that" 😂

Black man cut my hair when i was 7 years old. He asked me what i wanted and i told him a "spike on top and buzz on the sides and back" Longest haircut i ever had but it felt good like my haircut was so important it had to be perfect i aint lying this cat was getting low eye level from different angles up,down, northeast, southwest, northsoutheastwestsouthwesteast Chop chop chop, clip clip clip, clip chop chop cllliiiipp!! I never heard sounds his scissors made, his clippers didn't make a start up jernttt sound like white clippers and i seen 4 dimensions of my head with his mirror angles. It was easy to look to not breaking my neck trying to see myself. Then he did the warm towel thing and blowed dried all fine cut hairs out of my scalp and towel my face off my ears off, not one single piece of a cut hair on me when i was done. I remember my mom saying thank you and it looks good blah blah blah and she paid him and gave him a tip and we were walking out BUT I turned around as we walked out and he was looking at me smiling and i felt happy like Christmas morning unwraaping presents kinda of happy. I got a note from a girl and it was from another girl asking me if i wanted to go with her!! Yes! Or No. her name was Holly and everbody wanted to go with her!! Im telling you i had a new found confidence in me like dammit lets go!! I wasn't shy no more...i had the girl!! My first girlfriend and she was smokin hot lol. I wouldn't get a haircut unless we went back to him and when i moved to different state when i was 11 years old....the thing i missed worse,my 💈 barber. No one did it like him.
