I'm a 57 year old white woman. I've never been to a black cookout, but my husband and I did go to an all black memorial service for a dear friend who passed from cancer just over a year ago, where about 60 members of her extended family were there. Besides the tablecloths and napkins, we were the only white things there, too....LOL We were sat front & center at the table of honor with her immediate family when we arrived, and they asked me to give a speech during the service. We were treated like family and told that we are a part of their family now. We spent the last 2 weeks of her life getting to know Brenda's family during her hospice, and we were her doggy god-parents, caring for her pup while she was in and out of the hospital over the last year, and now have the gift of her goofy little poodle as a daily reminder of her sweet soul. Her family all lived out of state and she hid her illness from them until the very end. She was a former neighbor, and we always watched out for her, making sure she had food, running errands, taking her to appointments, etc. I could probably do a video myself, though....it's amazing how people are basically all the same, but cultures and traditions can be so different! Zach is absolutely correct, though...her family are some of the best people we've ever met and we stay in touch with her brothers & sisters on a regular basis. If we're ever invited to one of their cookouts, you can bet we're going! Saw this in the comments and I experienced this as well. One of my best experiences in life was being the only white man invited by a black friend at work to go visit his church. Never felt more accepted and loved. It was a life changing and eye opening experience. Beautiful and real people.

I got blessed to be able to go to a huge black family reunion at a small church in my neighborhood. I delivered some family reunion t-shirts that they had made. There was over 100 t-shirts. When I got out of the car and carried the shirts, the lady who ordered the shirts, hugged me up til I almost passed out. When I got my breath back, she grabbed my by the arm and lead me over to the family, where I got a standing ovation. She said, "let's eat." I was the first one to get a plate of the best bbq ever. We prayed, and pigged. Many of the people made a trip over to me the thank me for the shirts. I had my mouth to full of bbq to say anything, but waved to them. I remember this like it was yesterday.

I am so sad that we lost our traditions of all getting together after church-life has changed. There are alot of lonely people like myself who loves people of all colors-but my own flesh and blood breaks my heart-if only I could find good people that would love me back and consider me family-it would change my life forever. I'm tired of crying and feeling abandoned-this video is a blessing to know that there are still families that come together-mine never will-they are in their own world-could care less about the mother who birthed them, raised them, and it hurts me so bad. I am gld he got the experience he did-but what I heard were about a large family cookout-didnt matter to me they were not white- i just wish people would help others that on an emotional level feel a part of acceptance and love. This man is right on, I’m white, when I was living down in GA a buddy invited me. Super fun, great folks. I tried so damn hard to remember everyone’s name. When asked id be sure to repeat it when talking to them to remember. Accidentally mixed up two people got roasted rofl. “ we black so we look alike huh?!” ~ I bet my face was redder then an freshly painted pick up truck. I kept falling asleep / out of it by the end, one of them let me crash with them ( wasn’t even my buddy lol. ) I was 18, in someone’s car nodding in. I’d wake up leaning on a big woman’s shoulder, after 3rd time I apologized, she grabbed my head and said “ you can sleep!” & I did lol. This was over 10 years ago. But when being invited. I’ve always pushed myself to meet new people. Go to new places. Best stories in life come from when you were feeling scared/embarrassed/stressed lol. In japan, I was the first white person to EVER be inside the home of this family out in the country side ~ well that’s a story for another day. Every group of people ( creed, color, culture, religion etc) has Good people And bad. More often then not just different. Most of us, just want our loved ones to be safe, healthy, happy. Care about each other. More often than not welcoming. I’m not religious, but I like the holidays especially Thanksgiving and Christmas. As it’s about inviting people from different places, share cultural ideas, food, eat & talk. People in the USA are so lucky. We have a great mixing pot of cultures here, unlike any other nation. And comparing nations with a lot of different groups. Crime rate is lower, Americans will protest & try to help people who are different. Racism ~ is born from ignorance, not meeting different people, personally. Yeah the bad is focused on most. But just look how things have changed since 1980s. How many people of all backgrounds protested for Rodney King. A white person, who grew up mainly around white people in a middle class family, won’t know what another person who looks different goes through. But more often then not, we as a nation tend to fight injustices. Risked our nation splitting because slavery was disgusting. Boycotting South Africa during the apartheid. Protesting Vietnam/Iraq. We’re all humans first! Good / bad, Then citizens of a nation. This story is important. He admitted to feeling uncomfortable lol. But he went! And had a blast. More often than not you can have the same experiences! Thanks for posting this Shaq! Especially now, when people are thinking being part of a group is more important than being good/bad. All cultures, and civilizations grow TOGETHER. People say “X was stolen”. But that’s not true in most cases. Just when humans see a better way, we change. For example, the birth of Abrahamic religions, made the world closer. Vikings/groups that focused on fighting / killing slowly passed. Humans bred to be territorial. Aggressive. Physically strong. For most of our existence. But it’s been in recent times, that intelligence, love, understanding & kindness is becoming more valued. Anyone interested in Japan but heard bad things. Go there & decide for yourself. There was a guy who went on a talent show. He used blackface & mimic’s Louie Armstrong. Using his mouth to make trumpet sounds. Years later he was told “ black face is bad. It would hurt others” he never did it again. He didn’t know. Trying to understand others. Looking at their hearts, before shouting racist/racism is important. We’re all brothers & sisters, that want our loved ones to be happy & safe. Even if someone does something obviously racist. They may not know it was/is racist. By asking them, not yelling not shaming, but listening and talking. You’ll change more hearts. Many knows what’s racist / what hurts others until they’re told. Sorry for the rant! Love for all. Happy holidays!

Once a month in my town there is a big cookout like this where all the black families show up and pretty much take over an intersection of two streets. You can't get through there in a vehicle, so you have to go around. One day I got a flat tire right by that intersection and some folks at the cookout saw me. They came over and asked if I needed help. When we were done, I offered them some cash for helping me out. They said, man we don't need your money, just trying to help a brother out but what you could do is come over and hang with us at the cookout. This video captures to a T how it went the first time I attended. I've now been to 7 or 8 of these and like this guy said, there is occasionally some scary shit that goes down. You just got to hold your own and do your best to work around the fact that you stick out like a sore thumb. Some of the coolest folks I've ever hung out with and damn right some of the best cooking I've ever had. I even donated my green egg smoker to the cause cuz they didn't have enough grill space. We can all come together if we just try. Racism is perpetuated by those too afraid to try and see the other side. Break bread, throw bones, toss cornhole, drink a beer, but avoid the spades table at all costs because, let's face it, shit gets real there sometimes.

So much yes! You're in the right place, too! I was born and raised in a small town just outside of Atlanta. I've traveled all over the US and have been to quite a few east Asian countries. I've tried many fantastic foods in my travels, but nothing comes close to a backyard barbecue in Georgia.

As a Brazilian, to me this is so weird hahahha, here it's so mixed that we don't really have this cultural difference that much anymore, but it's still so funny to watch!

I wish someone would teach me how to play spades. Everyone who plays it just makes fun of you for not knowing how to play.

Spades is a game of balls and you learn by getting ballsy and jump in

Plenty of spades apps on the app store you can download and learn how to play. Then act like a noob around people and run your pockets up

This is so damn funny but honestly beautiful at the same time, one of the most wonderful things in life is people from different cultures bonding and getting along. Made my damn day!!

I had a lot of fun watching this video. Hilarious. As a white dude myself, I am realizing my cookouts are missing out on a lot lol. Love to brothers and sisters of every color everywhere. Please invite me to a real cookout. I haven't lived yet.... I want to.

I've always found it so heartwarming that the grandparents and great grandparents are the nicest ones when sadly they have lived through the worst time in this country and lived through the most horrid, dispicable racism this country has ever seen and yet they remain humble and non biter, I think thats says so much and is so beautiful.

I had the same experience many years ago (yeah, I'm old now) and can confirm: I STILL remember that cookout as some of THE BEST food I ever ate. And the portions were so generous that even now, maybe twenty years on, I might still be trying to digest it all.

I was laughing so hard I cried. Then rubbed my eyes and apparently I had rubbed makeup or something in my eyes by doing that, cause it burned so bad!!! Went from laughing to screaming.. Stopped to fix my self.. and then saw shaqs reaction to " we play go fish and cornhole" let's say I was thankful I washed my hands cause I was dying laughing to the point of tears again!!! Lol thabks for this one shaq.
