I grew up in North Carolina in the 70’s. One of my fondest memories as a kid was my white family being invited to the most wonderful cookout. Yes everyone else was black. But no one cared about white or black. I got along so well and I assumed everyone was like this everywhere. Then I grew up and the reality changed. I miss the days of true acceptance, and not the new segregation that is being preached on social media.

Shame isn’t it. I only know one race HUMAN race, and we are made in Gods image and to love and accept and forgive and help one another. Been in similar situation, but was with an asian family and sooo many people and my friend and i are overseas and scared to do anything wrong. “Fear is temp”. God had us there for a purpose and we had a blast. Sadly, where we were making great strides, we have social media and politicians trying to divide us. I am a white man and married to a black woman - I have been in his shoes, lol. Her mom and I get along great; as time has progressed, she had tasted a lot of my cooking and loved it. The second year of my marriage to her daughter (many, many years ago), she decided for her birthday she was having a cookout (with 9 brothers and sisters, a large cookout) and she wanted me to BBQ the ribs and chicken, but I was not allowed to tell anyone that I had done them. I was to make them ahead of time and bring them with us - and to get there early. I did 3 racks and 30 lbs of chicken. After everyone had eaten, she made the announcement that I was the one who had done the meat. After a few "He**, naw"s and so forth, folks opened up to me and started accepting me into the family a little more. Every year since, I have done the BBQ; in fact she told me that she has had folks tell her that if I aint cooking, they aint coming. Like another poster has said, most of us in the country can get along with and appreciate each other. It wasn't the paid demonstrators, the people on TV everyday, and the politicians that fought for civil rights; it was ordinary people, standing together side-by-side that began the change we are still working on today. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be married today to the love of my life; I hope that's the kind of change I can make for my grandkids.

His accent isn't thick enough for Alabama, but maybe...I live in Alabama now and I don't have a Southern accent at all, but I moved around a lot as a kid and worked my butt off to get rid of my accent. He's being totally honest because these women put out a spread and I went to fix my plate the grooms mom, who I get along with well told me to sit my white ass down, she was bringing me a plate. I worked with a guy years ago that happened to be black, and I am white. We worked together for quite a while and ended up good friends. Well, one day at work my friend asked me and the rest of us on the shift if we wanted to go to a club he was part owner of; there were 5 of us and all white. He said since it was Halloween they had a costume contest and it would be a lot of fun. Well, we all went to the club which happened to be all black members. By the time we got there (we worked afternoon shift) everyone was well into the Halloween spirit and having a good time. When we walked in, everyone ran over and started getting real close and looking at us. I mean real close.....looking at our faces. My friend was dying laughing-I asked him what was so funny and he said he told them he was bringing some friends dressed up like white people! We always played tricks on each other but that took the cake!

A friend of mine invited me to a Texas cookout with her all-black family (I look as white as white has ever looked so the salt was really the only thing that matched me lol) and I have never had my hands held so warmly so often in one sitting xD Nor have I been given so many nicknames! When I was in the Navy, I couldn't get home for a Thanksgiving, so this black guy who worked with me told me to come to his house so I could have a Thanksgiving meal. There had to be at least 30 people there, and I was the only white person there. Those people treated me like a son/brother...so gracious, and it's something I've never forgotten to this day. I didn't grow up around a lot of black people, my first real experiences (talking) with black people didn't come until I went into the Military. Quite a few of my friends in the military were black...and these guys came from all different backgrounds. Some of those guys were straight from the hood, gang banger type...some where just down to earth good christian guys. There wasn't many of us white guys in our division, but the black guys looked out for us in many different ways. I learnt quite a few things from being around black people that I still hold close to my heart to this day. But sitting around a dinner table with black people...you will eat good southern food, and you will laugh your ass off hearing how they talk to each other. I'm of Italian decent, and I know how we act around the dinner table...you will have tears in your eyes from laughter around black people at the dinner table. My parents were so thankful that I didn't spend that thanksgiving alone...that family opened up their hearts and their home to me. That's how I was raised...and I think we should ALL be like that. Yes...I can play spades! lol

I am a black man. Growing up, my mother was the BEST Italian cook around. Literally her Italian friends would beg for her linguine and clams. I used to joke I thought I was just Sicilian till I was 10! Bottom line is when we break bread together we realize we are not so different. This story resonates with me because growing up I lived in the same town as Marcus Camby. Some how we talked our way into one of their cookouts. My friend came with me, white and blond as could be. But they welcomed him with open arms. All we have to do is break bread to realize we are not so different. This is one of the funniest videos I've seen in my life!

Dear Brandon here’s how we in the black community get down with the cookout ( function ) If you go to one during the holidays preferably Christmas you gotta arrive early bcoz here’s how it goes Light breakfast Lunch (after the prayer especially during 4th of July of which you will hear a bapticogistiolic prayer : black prayer) : it’s more of a brunch aspect : pancakes , bacon , eggs , grits , fruit , beverage , ribs , fried chicken , cornbread , collard greens , yams , macaroni and cheese Dinner : that which was not consumed at lunch WILL BE CONSUMED AT DINNER dessert : sweet potato pie , banana pudding , any fruit pie / cobbler Any games such as dominoes , spades , go fish , maybe cornhole Hope to see u out the cookout one day

My parents worked out of town throughout alot of my younger childhood...I was raised by two of the absolute BEST black ladies that ever been placed upon this Earth. Period. They took me and my sisters into their families, we did cookouts, Black Church on Sundays and hangin around on Friday nights in the neighborhood. And yes, being "In" a Black community is by far the best place a kid could grow up, you learn responsibility, for sure respect of your elders and get a real sense of Family. I am so grateful for that time in my life and will be forever indebted to those two fine ladies and their families. I still can feel that whack up the backside of my head when I would let my mouth overload my butt...:)

I did that with lt ex too. Her Grandmother would call me like we're having a BBQ. Come get a plate. I would show up eat, play spades and bones (thats what we call dominoes out here) and my ex would be there making me a plate. Her people are the most hospitable. Love them. Even after she got married and I started having my own family, they would still call me for a plate. And they even invited my children and their mother. Best people ive ever met in my entire life....the whole lot of them. And we never had an issue.

I’m from Glasgow and was invited to my Asian, from Pakistani heritage, mates wedding. As with most weddings it’s 90% family and people he grew up with and I’m one of about 6 white people there. Had a great time, food was amazing. Didn’t realise that dessert is such a big thing at Asian weddings though, tables overflowing with everything you can imagine and didn’t look like it would ever run out so was being polite and standing back to invite others to go first. A couple of people behind us started laughing and one of the girls put her arm around my shoulder and said ‘This must be your first Asian wedding. You can’t be polite, you need to get in before there’s nothing left.’ I laughed, she rolled her eyes, grabbed my hand and dragged me through the crowd to be met by a half empty table and she helped me pick out the best stuff there.

There is always hope. We can’t just let the Media make us think that all blacks and whites hate each other. I think the majority of us just see each other as people. Were just different colors. Just like dogs for example. There may be different breeds and different colors of dogs but all of them are still dogs. I think we are moving forward and i think the vast majority of people believe that all lives matter, we all have feelings, we all love and want to be loved. We all eat and drink. There are more similarities between us all then there are differences. And the color of someones skin doesn’t separate any one from being part of one race. The human race. When i fill out forms that ask what race i am. I make my own little box and write in “ human race” because why does it matter?

Love this. I remembered going to my friend's 35th birthday party. It's was like 20yrs ago. It was in the hood and I was the only light Hispanic in an all black party. I loved it we played darts and bones. Food was great! I never had Hennessy and boy that kicked my butt. One thing I took from going is that family is important. It was a blessing to have been invited. I'll never forget it.

Hey Van, I’m outside up here in Wisconsin doing some carpentry work and this channel showed up. Man alive, I had to stop what I was doing and just watch the same type of friendship I really enjoyed while I was in the Marine Corps. I’m sick and tired of politicians telling us that whites are all right wing extremists and that Blacks wear the scars of their great great relatives. No no no! That is not the way it was in the Marine Corps Van. Not even close. As a matter of fact, it was Motown that made a huge difference because EVERYBODY listened to Motown. And that wasn’t all. About 50 % of the Marines were black the rest were white, Mexican, and Puerto Rican. That made whites a minority. And another fact people don’t know is that about one half to one third of the black population did not enlist. They stood before a judge who gave them an ultimatum: 6 years in prison or 4 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. An easy but smart decision because the Drill Instructor’s won’t let you fail. They want all of us to leave there as Men so they beat the child out of us. It is so awesome to graduate with all of the Marines we started with and watch these belligerent young boys turn into great Men! There was no racism in the Marine Corps back then. There was pride of being one single awesome GREAT team. A team you could trust to watch your back during war in the jungle. The first time I ever cried was the first time I ever witnessed a murder. I was a Team Leader of a Machine Gunner Team and PFC Keith Anderson was my Machine Gunner. Keith was a very big super built black man (kid-18yrs old) and he was also a most gentle soul. He would never start a fight and was kind to every one. We went to Mass together every Sunday morning while everyone else slept. Anyway, we were on the USS SCHENECTADY LST 1185 on July 10TH, 1977. There was another black guy about half the size of Keith who didn’t like Keith and was always jerking his chain. On this day, Keith had to go downstairs below deck to get a 50lb box of meat from the freezer for dinner later on. Keith knew the drill so he went downstairs and waited for kieth to round the corner with both hands full and buried a butcher knife right in his upper abdomen the ran for help to the First Sargeants headquarters for protection. Keith was able to make it to the top deck of the cafeteria right where I was sitting with friends. I saw him staggering holding his side drenched in blood. I got up and sat him down in my seat and told him to relax. I told everyone around me to call a corpsman and told Keith to just relax and take deep breath. Keith told me the other guys name who stabbed him. I needed to get more pressure on his abdomen because of the amount of bleeding so I asked Keith if I could take a peak under his T-shirt and see what I was dealing with. So as I started to raise his shirt when we got to the wound, Keith raised it far enough so he could see himself and as he did so his bowels spilled out onto his lap. They literally gushed out onto his lap because their was so much blood behind it. Keith’s eyes rolled back in his head and within two minutes he bleed out completely. His abdomenal aortic artery had been slashed. I had never witnessed a death until PFC Keith Anderson on July 10th, 1977. You can actually look it up on a FB page Van, because we happened to be on the largest International war games post-Cold War. It was called Operation Fortress Lightning Mindoro Island, Philippines. October 21st, 1977 when the largest Marine Corps helicopter crash in our history occurred. I was one of the First Responders. We we acknowledged finally on October 21st, 2019. There is a FB page under Mindoro Island 1977. Eternal rest grant onto Keith, Oh Lord.

I lived in the Deep South and you don’t know living until you attend a black family cookout. It’s seriously the best food, games and company I’ve ever experienced. I loved it so much and had such a good time that I became a regular fixture with my friends family. They taught me some of their family recipes and told me stories of their heritage. I miss them dearly now that I’m on the west coast. We keep in touch still. Best memories of my younger years for sure.

I been the only white dude at the cook out before. Everyone was cool, food was great, everybody had a great time. But when we grabbed our plates and sat down, I sat at the table with my buddies. There was an older gentlemen who I sat down next to, and so I tried engaging him and started up a convo. Dude just look me dead in the eyes and didn’t say a word to me 😂😂😂 my buddies were like oh don’t worry about him he a old head and he don’t trust white people. I understood what he meant, didn’t press him no more for convo. But after we ate, I lit up the weed and made sure to pass it to him. He didn’t speak to me but I think we made some progress 😂😂👍🏼.

Different cultures, backgrounds, and views will make things interesting! Even in a single culture there are differences of opinion about things. But there are similar things about those differences. With completely different cultures there are still similar things. Too offen we just look at the differences. We should look at both. embrace the similar and learn from the differences. We are all human on this rock in space. The differences can bring so much fun and enjoyment from learning about it. But also love the fact when you get to the base of it all, we all have similar desires. Comfort, food, laughter, and prosperity. We might go about it differently, but we all want tge same thing. To live a good life. At the end, color, religion, politics don't really matter. It is embracing your fellow person and growing with every experience. Laughter is one of the best ways this happens. Love this. I was a musician and used to perform in a black group and I’m white. Loved it. When our lead man died, I went to his funeral and I was the only white guy there. There was a couple hundred folks there. They took me in like I was a lost relative. I had met most of them at gigs and benefits but they were great to me. I’ll never forget them and their hospitality. Growing up in the LA area I performed with Blacks many times and I had to been to socials. I was never mistreated by any of them. I have a deep seated love of black people because of the gifts they have given us in their talents and despite the hardships they endured. I am forever grateful to have known many and have made love with through music. I live in the South now and all the people here are really friendly. And they love to eat!! Got to ride my bicycle now. I know what you went through. I moved to Georgia from NM and my house is in a , well mostly black neighborhood. My neighbor invited me and my wife to his graduation cookout and when we got there we realized that we are the only white people there and it was uncomfortable to say the least! Long story short, that was the best cookout I have ever been to! The food was AMAZING! Any way we had a great time and had food I have never had before and we would go back and do it again anytime! Great people and the best neighbors we could ever have and still do!

I've been in his shoes many times. Made me laugh. I worked in Detroit and was the only white woman in my department and at after work parties. Had so much fun. This was in the 70s and we danced the soul train. I agree with him, I remember the food being great and just having such a fun time. I've been t a black cookout and I met some amazing group of people. Everyone there is so kind. There's a reason that soul food is called soul food. They put their heart and soul into their food. The family dynamic was very close. The elders in the family were treated with such respect. IF you ever are invited to a black barbeque, I would highly recommend you accept the invitation. Just make sure to go there hungry because you'll be stuffed when you leave!

Racism is still alive but it's not as exaggerated as the powers that be wanna make us think. There is still plenty of habitual/generational racists that I know that once they get to know a black person..they don't even think of them as their race. Which it's stupid to think "oh I don't even know they are black cause we get along " or whatever. I see color BUT I don't think bad of any certain color. But most of the racists I know don't really feel like they are superior people..they just make comments (behind their back) just because it's what they were taught. I wasn't raised in a household where those comments were made (though I had one set of grandparents that did make those comments at times) so I don't have this problem.

Christ I remember my first black cookout. I had a black friend in Rhode Island as a kid so it wasn't like I had never been around them but in the very early 90's I moved from there to North Carolina to a town that had 3,000 people that was still split to the black and white side of town. Now mind you they got along just fine, they both went to each side of town with no issues, you might hear two old men yelling at each other which would have been called racist now days but they'd laugh about it and be drinking beers later. Now go a few years later I'm a teen, tall, stringy and on top of that GOTH wearing all black loose baggy clothes and listening to metal in the middle of the bible belt so most tend to look at me as if I was the devil himself. Now I had a couple of black friends and one of their mothers invited me to the family cookout after church on Sunday and I was like HELL YEAH! BBQ time! SO I showed up Sunday after church was out dressed in my black boots, black Jincos, black Slayer T-shirt and dyed black hair. His mother answered the door and didn't even bat an eye because well it's me I might have looked scary to some but I a well spoken respectful kid if not a bit on the anti-social side and she just tells me to go around back and go through the side gate into the backyard. I was expecting Mom, dad, my friend and his 2 other siblings and maybe grandma and grandpa who lived not even a mile away... Well shit I come in the gate and round the corner of the house and I suddenly have 60 or more people in the yard turning to stare at me. I was the ONLY white person there and it was dead silent for what felt like forever as they gave me a look of "The hell are they doing here?" till granny piped up "What ya'll starin for! Get'em a plate an stack it high just lookit how skinny they is!" I went from anxiety attack to blushing like hell, after that I finally relaxed and got introduced to those who I didn't know and gave granny a hug and thanked her. She only threatened me with a spoon once when I refused seconds because she knew I was like a hoover when it came to food. You do not refuse seconds just to be polite!

This is how it was when I grew up in the 60's-70's...we laughed at each other and with each other...no one cared what "color" you were. We stood up for each other and, at times, fought each other's battles. Were we perfect? No. We just chose to get along...so we did. I'm in my 60's now & 95% of the people I meet (of every ethnicity & culture) are still the same way...the other 5%?...we just let them go their own way. Thanks for the laughter...😁

I went to a black cookout when I was 16 and ended up eating what felt like my entire body weight in food. I literally couldn't walk for about 6 hours and gained 10 lbs over the course of two days

I remember my first cookout. I was so little and it was one of my mom’s best friends, and I didn’t notice until I left and got back in the car, I said “mommy, were we the only white people at this party?” “Yes honey, we were!” “That potato salad was so good”

This was a good video. I was drafted in 70 and in boot camp there was a lot of race crap and riots. My platoon stayed out of it and we all got along. We were too scared of the drill sgt's. They were all Vietnam vets and took anyone out back that wanted to settle something. My best friend I ended up rooming with was black and we got along great. Like the same food, music, beer. I think the social media these days is used to rile everyone up with inflammatory shit. Getting along isn't that difficult.

I'm just going to say, there is a Southern White Culture that is worth celebrating, praising, and protecting. It ain't got nothing to do with racism, or bullshit, it is fun, unassuming, self-confident, proud, American, and AWESOME. That white guy, is showing it to us all.

Jacob Schings Crawfish boil. I dunno if anyone calls it craw boil since I grew up there but my family was military so not native, but I know what you mean about the food. I miss crawfish boil. You can find it in California but it is not the same. I had crawfish at Joe’s Crab Shack and I was never so disappointed in a dish in my life.

This is how America should be! Every culture has their differences and has many things they can teach us. I like this dude cuz he knows that respect almost always begets respect! We all need the be slow to judge and quick to find the good in others.
