This is another experiment with the Crave. This time I created a bunch of layers in my DAW that included the sound of whistles, timpani drums, Native American vocals, wavetable drones, rain sounds, thunder, and a galloping horse. I then layered a real-time drone from the Crave over it as I recorded the video. Taking the live sound from my DAW and feeding it into my phone as I recorded it.
Different, and not for everyone, but a fun experiment.

Thank You! Glad you enjoyed it. I have a mix of styles on my channel. I just bought a hardware synth so I have been experimenting with that recently.

It’s nice to watch you play « live » for us. That machine really seems funny to create incomparable atmospheric drones. Nice work man.

Thanks Fred! I've been having fun experimenting. Still a lot I haven't tried yet. I also need to figure out a better position for it so I can frame the video better. I had to shoot it in portrait (and then jump through hoops to rotate it) to get the phone in a reasonable position for this. My desk is too cramped and cluttered to do anything different at the moment.

Thanks Marcus! I wanted to see how things worked by adding the Crave last instead of first and building upon the drone. Time to go offline again now. I hope to catch you again soon.

Dear Colin, it sounds like you really love your Crave 🙂 What immediately struck me positively when looking at the Crave the first time is the large number of 1/8 inch TRS jacks. That time, however, I opted for the SQ64 from Korg because. Although it has no VCOs, there are four sequencer tracks with 1/8 inch TRS outputs to connect to my Eurorack system. A handy sequencer with multiple run modes. Now I'm enjoying Behringer's Crave on your channel and I really like the music you make with it. Einstürzende Neubauten! Yours, Markus

Thanks Markus! I agree, the patch bay on the Crave was a big deciding factor for me. I also looked at the Neutron. The patch connectors on the Crave include things not on the Neutron and I just wanted to get my feet wet with semi-modular synths. This has worked out great for me. I may even try and figure out the Korg MS-20 USB controller I have again. I tried patching that before and I was just confused. I wish it could be connected to the Crave, but I don't think it has 5v outputs on it, I think it is mostly a way to set the VST it came with. I will have to investigate more. I have a VST sequencer that works with the Crave. It is an analog style with up to 128 notes and channels for note, octave, velocity, aftertouch, gate etc. I wish I had a controller to tweak the controls on that in real-time. EDIT: I just tried hooking up a meter to the patch bay of the MS-20 USB controller, and I was right, there is no voltage/voltage change on the KeyboardCV output when playing a range of notes. So I won't be able to connect the two devices together.

I also had my eye on the Neutron synthesizer from Behringer because it has a huge patchbay. But then I wanted to build my synthesizer system with smaller modules. Three years ago, my mother gave me some money so that I could buy Moog's Matriarch synthesizer. This analog synthesizer has a very good sound and also a large patchbay. Out of gratitude, I named this wonderful synthesizer after my mother's name "Ingeborg" 🙂 .

@@MarkusGrandpre That is the perfect thing to do when the synth is called "Matriarch". The Crave has a great collection of patch points for the price and seems to have options that are missing from the Neutron, unless they are just labelled something different. I think once I have used the Crave a little more and have figured out what everything does I might be able to tell if the same features are on other synths under a different name.

Thanks! I am glad I went with the Crave. It is far more flexible that the Wasp when it comes to the modulation etc. The Wasp might be a good pairing for it. You may remember I mentioned owning the original Wasp. I also owned the original Pro One, so that is also a possibility in the future. Time will tell if I add another Behringer or go with the Roland SH-4d I was originally thinking of getting.

I love this improvisation, it sounds very trippy and atmospheric! And it's funny because just today I was looking into buying either a Crave or a TD-3 for myself. I can't decide yet and your video made this even more difficult... :D But I wouldn't have it any other way. Thanks for sharing a great performance! :)

I love the Crave and am really happy I made the decision to go with it. I was always looking for a synth rather than the bass/sequenced side of things. It depends on what you plan to use it for. The Crave does have the ability to get good bass tones and the sequencer allows for accents, rests, ties etc. The biggest advantage of the Crave is the patch bay if you want to get more varied sounds out of it. Ideally the two working together would be the best solution, but that isn't always practical. Whichever you decide on, I think you will be happy.
