'I 'Was' in love with him but the marriage is over now, and I don't want to seek him out or have anything to do with him again' is something that many, many humans would say after they break up with someone. Even if the love itself hadn't faded completely, you have to move forward, not seek out someone who is dangerous or harmful to you (forget the magical powers part for the moment - humans can be harmful as well). People don't want to seek out an ex because it's painful. Doesn't mean the love has fully faded, but it's just not healthy to keep going back. Most people don't, because it's just not smart. If my boss ordered me to go and seek my ex for a favour (an interview), I'd say no, too. I'm not a journalist, though. Mind you, neither is Phoebe - she is a psychologist and writes an advice column. It's not even her JOB to seek a local celebrity for an interview! Look at Brad and Angelina. They were in love for like 10 years, then had a very bitter breakup that has been an ongoing court battle (over assets) ever since the breakup! If you were directing a film, would you think it was a good idea to even attempt to hire both of those actors for the film? Given all the personal tension and the fact that it's better for them not to even try to work together? No, you wouldn't be THAT stupid! So Elise should not have asked Phoebe to seek Cole for an interview because he was a local 'hero' for what he did. It was wrong.

When I watched Charmed as a little girl, I didn't see it. But now I see it clearly. Cole being a demon is just a metaphor for a toxic abusive ex with criminal connections who can be very charming and manipulate those around him to make the woman who left him feel like she made a mistake.

I wouldn’t say that exactly. Piper dated a warlock, crushed on a ghost. Paige fell in love with a guy whose magic corrupted him. It was just a lesson for her, she a blind puppy dog falling in love with a man who provided stability, normalcy with magic. He was just not all there mentally or emotionally.
