White noise a pleasant sounding full spectrum sound. Many use it for sleep, relaxing or focus by masking others nearby sounds. It is most recognizable as the static sound heard on (analog) television or radio. It is one of many noise colors each with different frequency responses: • Noise Color Sounds for...
White Noise frequency response is even across the human listening spectrum, aka a flat response. This makes it ideal for testing speaker, microphones frequency response by playing it back and measuring the sound with a real time spectrum analyzer (RTA).
Noise is present at low levels in analog recording and often known as hiss, static or fuzz. It is incorporated into music production for a myriad of creative and technical purposes. Noise is artistically splashed into electronic dance music, often filtered, swept with equalizers (EQ). White noise is used in digital recording by adding very low levels, around -90dBu, to smooth out music masking sonic artifacts inherent in digital (PCM) recording These artifacts are basically sonic graininess--pixilation essentially. Listeners argue that even if the noise is undetectable in hearing tests, it improves the listening experience
Perhaps this is because White Noise, and its sonic relatives, Pink, Green, Brown, Blue, Grey and Violet Noise sonically permeate the environment humankind has lived in since the dawn of listening. Streams, rivers, oceans, the wind in the trees, rain, vehicles, machinery, footsteps on gravel or leaves, fire and even sounds heard by babies in the womb are a few examples of noise in our environment. Can you think of more natural White Noise examples?
The creation process involved a DAW (digital audio workstation), ProTools. An audio signal generator was utilized to create noise which is then equalized to represent the audio spectrum responses of white noise as defined by the broadcast industry in the early-mid 20th Century. (Wikipedia a great resource for more information) The audio is recorded from the generator for 10 hours and then exported into a video editing program, Magix Vegas. A corresponding video is created with custom graphics I made in the video program. The visual is animated, then married to the audio and rendered out to the full length final video.
Thanks for listening, Dale

Its so weird, but this actually helps me study. I usually get distracted by outside noises (family, TV, air conditioning, etc...) but when this is playing it's like I'm listening to complete silence. It's so loud and consistent that I can just tune it out and focus. Funny. Yes, I am writing this when I should be writing a paper. Yes, that paper is due tomorrow morning. Yes, I am royally screwed.

White noise has been played back in office spaces for this very reason of its masking effect of other environmental sounds. Thanks for commenting....back to writing....haha

Might try pink noise as well. It's more based on how humans perceive sound intensity, and therefore it'll block out quite a bit more (especially the rumble of engines and similar sounds)

I was totally thinking about that very idea that everything at once = noise. I tried it mistakenly playing back every song from one album simultaneously. It was trippy, but would need to combine thousands of music tracks to make noise I imagine.

This static noise is a god send. My thoughts run away from me at times and this literally calms me down. I'm a lot more focused while I'm working with this playing in the background. I sometimes wake up at night due to stress, hunger, etc. and can't readily get back to sleep but I put my head phones on with this and I'm able to relax where I can fall back asleep. This white noise should be recommended to sufferers of anxiety to see if this eases their mind before they are prescribed medication.

calm down, those are subconscious figures, white noise tends to bring them, they are harmless when you accept they are yours and that they can't harm you. white noise can bring other types of hallucinations. they are normal and some people use it to enter deep into their subconscience. just know that they are just hallucinations brought by the deprivation of senses. yes, white noise counts as sense deprivation.

I have been taking some time to think about something after an event that could have been prevented if I had just stopped and listened. I can be very argumentative and sometimes I don't know when to stop arguing with someone even if it is for the dumbest reason. I thought, for a while, that I had gotten over this argumentative urge until today and I realized that I needed to try to better myself. I try not to beat myself up over it but I just can't help it sometimes. I decided to look up some white noise to help me think about what my mom told me to try to do, to try to just listen instead of argue against someones logic. Then I found this. I listened and meditated for only a few minutes and I wanted to say thank you for posting this. It helped me look into myself a little....if that makes any sense.
