Very interesting how you sampled the different ratios. The first part of the video was superb editing. Worth watching and learning in case anyone skipped over it. tHanks for the video!

Thanks for the video. I have heard of soap finish but never spoke with anyone who actually uses it. I doubt that I will ever try it myself but I found it interesting to see you use it.

Thanks for watching! It was certainly an interesting experiment and I think it was perfect for the stool. Not sure about anything else but it's a good little trick to keep in my pocket.

Love the details on the finish. I like how your Bosch jigsaw straight cut is about 7 degrees off center. Mine is the same.

And the cut on the top doesn't line up with the cut on the bottom.. It was a thick piece white oak but to say I dislike the jigsaw would be an understatement.

Interesting, I have never heard of a soap finish. Maybe the video didn't show it but when you were measuring the kerf of the blade it looked like you measured the blade 'body' and not the tooth. Nice score on the hardwood!

Me too, never came upon this idea before today. (To think, I thought soap was just for writing on the mirror in the bathroom when I was supposed to have been cleaning my room).

Not sure if that was the "replay" or the actual time I measured it..

I am using soap for the first time on an oak table. I thought it would make it whiter in color, but it seems that it makes the table a bit darker. Although i find it a beautiful finish I dont know if i did something wrong. I used the 4:1 ratio, which i saw on another video on KZbin.

That may change a little over time.. The stool I made for the video is in front of my fireplace and I think it's pretty close to the natural color of the wood. I haven't had to do anything to it and it must be a year now. Still one of my favorite finishes.

A more watered down version is often used to clean the surfaces, I think. That way you clean and top up the finish at the same time. In Scandinavia they often use soft woods for furniture. With regular maintenance like that you get finish in new dents and scrapes too and not a finish that starts to peel off after a few years.

I thought that might be the reason for the watered down finish but it got really sudsy. I reached out to a few skandihooligans I used to work with but they weren't familiar with it.

It is, as far as I know, NOT Skandinavien but only Danish. MCM famous furniture makers as Hans Wegner and Børge Mogensen (yes they are danish) used it, and especially on OAK (a natural danish tree, which is not so common in northern Scaninavia Norway and Sweeden). If you want to see, what their fiurniture looks like, try to Google them. Their furniture is, by the way, still produced, and is quite expensive. Soapflakes is a wonderful non toxic way to make a silkysmooth surface, and works particularly well on oak. Make sure to get the soapflakes with at least 80% fat and no artificials added. Enjoy 😊

What are some of your favorite finishes for a stool like that?

well.. soap now.. I think a lot of it depends on the wood.
