As a white woman growing up in New Jersey, and learning about this History which everyone MUST learn, it depressed me to grow up in such a depraved country, that would treat people so horribly, and for such a stupid reason. We must NEVER give up on trying to make this a country that serves everyone, and we MUST keep on sharing our History, no matter how shameful!

This is unaddressed ptsd. Ms Holiday sung the song to address the crime and it is a HIGH CRIME-MURDER! The American government went after police statement through incarceration and harassment. True drug addiction is criminal but so is MURDER!

I noticed that in this presentation, Ms Billie Holiday was being referred to as "holiday" small "h" as if her pain and courage were small. Respect is always in order. Peace

Good morning Edward. You said; ""holiday" small "h" There is no disrespect, here. Captions are not written by the You Tube creator. They are done digitally by artificial intelligence. The digital captioning recognizes Billy, Mary, George as a first name. And Smith, and Jones as a last name. ______________________ However, the word holiday is not recognized as a name. However, if the word holiday follows Billy, it capitalizes Holiday. You will also notice, the digital scribe spells it Billy, and not Billie. Because it does not recognize the gender. __________________________ You will also notice that captioning does not punctuate. But there is no disrespect intended here.

Abbey Lincoln knew and admired Billie Holiday for her strength to sing this song, yet despite this, she followed in her legacy, suffering the same blacklisting.

I remember when that song was still new among black folk . My Grand parents and eight children had to flee Cochran ,Ga because the Klan was lynching my family’s neighbors . We had a lot of farm land there and was buying more but it was so dangerous they had to protect the children.

Really? A song about something they could ride up and down the highways and see for themselves were moved by a song? Okay. How about seeing those innocent black bodies swinging from the trees affecting their so called consciousness.
