Etta and Beyoncé should have sang the song together at the Inauguration. Let the original sing a least a verse or two! Having a 70 year old woman singing, a woman who endured JIM CROW, the woman who sang the song during the civil rights era MAKES SO MUCH SENSE. I don’t see why at least Michelle Obama didn’t see the meaning or importance of having Etta James involved.

Etta and others went thru the ringer to make a name for themselves and paved the way for the future Beyonces of the world. It was disrespectful of the Obamas and Beyoncé to have sung At Last without Etta at least in attendance. With that being said though, it’s not Etta’s song. It was written my 2 men and first performed by Glenn Miller for a movie. It made #2 in the billboard by 1942. Etta never claimed it was “hers” but she is the one that made it iconic. So she deserved at least a “nod” at the inauguration

Her stuff was so good, other stars wanted their name on it. Their privilege giving them a leg up to drown her name out. And so when a fellow black woman started to push it a bit, she’d had enough. i understand her anger with the song and not being invited to sing or even considered. firstly because it brings up old wounds of having what she worked hard at taken away with no credit, and secondly because she wasn’t even considered or acknowledged to sing her own song! i don’t think it’s right for her to say such harsh things about beyoncé because it wasn’t her fault but i completely understood her hurt feelings and turning nasty
@kittensmitten3287

How is it not Beyonce's fault? Beyonce claims everything goes through her first. If beyonce had any decorum or respect for artists that came before her or after her, she would have contacted Etta James and either get her blessings or include her in singing together. She literally played Etta James in a film. Did Beyonce even study Etta like Angela Bassett studied Tina before doing the movie? Now I'm curious. And before you go into your worship mode of Beyonce, just remember Beyonce did the same thing to Ledisi at the Grammys. Took the moment from Ledisi to sing a song she had no business doing, when Ledisi sang and played the role in the actual movie. Y'all are gonna understand Beyonce uses her power and influence and the males she's surrounded by (her father, Jay-Z), to sabotage and step on other black women in the industry to move up. Cuz she definitely can't sabotage Taylor Swift mediocre self.

I felt the same way about Beyonce singing At Last at the inaugural ball for the Obamas also. Etta James was still alive to sing her song. It’s not about giving Etta James a heads-up but more about asking her if she could. Singing as a portrayal of Ms. James is one thing but to sing like it was her song without permission is another. And, the Obamas should have known better too. It should have, “Ms. James would you sing your iconic song for us?” if she said no. Then would you mind if Beyonce sang it. No! That's Ettas song. PERIOD! She could have at least asked to sing it with Etta. And told the Obamas that she wanted Etta woth her to help since it was really her song, not Beys. I love Etta James. ❤️

It's a song that anyone can and a lot of singers have sung, idc that it was Etta's signature song.. If she had a problem, it should have been directed at the Obamas for requesting it be sang by Beyonce; not attack Beyonce. But, I do understand that her outburst was probably due to her dementia. I felt bad for Beyonce, who only sang a song as requested.

The song was a cover. Etta wasn't the original singer of the song but a dark skinned black woman was. Her version ended being forgotten and went unnoticed by the masses while Etta's rendition completely overshadowed her. Etta was a bitter old lady like many of them are period. She is still an icon but stop capping for her bc she's an elder

"At Last" was not an original song of Etta's it was written by two men years before she performed it. She was not the first to cover the song. Her anger at Beyonce didn't make sense since it wasn't HER song perse.

This is why Etta prefered Christina Aguilera to Beyoncé. She had complete respect and love for Etta and makes sure the world knows it. Beyoncé is just a cash grab that as always, decided the spotlight was entirely for her; same as she did in Destiny's Child. Hints why it was Christina that gets to hold the torch with At Last and sings it at every concert she does; Etta loved and approved of Christina

Best singer ever. Extraordinary talent. Barack Obama is a political facade, thus it is no surprise he chose Beyonce even when the source of that song, the heart of it, the real deal, was alive and capable, and could have used the work and the exposure. A terrible decision on his part: shallow, political, hollow. Etta is forever the best.

Unpopular opinion here. Etta James was often vulgar and profane in her singing gigs. That repuatation as well as her dementia made her a wild card. I would like to see her story told onscreen. Cadillac Records showed us half of a chapter. Be nice to give an unknown a chance to bring her story to life! I can understand her annoyance. No one considered her feelings knowing she was alive. The Obama’s were to blame. Kind of odd because they would not have asked a younger artist to perform a Aretha Franklin song when she was still alive.

Etta James will forever be a legend. But y'all are acting like Beyonce isn't creating her own legacy. And she portrayed Ms. James in the movie Cadillac Records, which was out at the time which is why she was asked, it wasn't random. Her singing definitely may have been a misstep, but it was not intended to slight Etta James. And y'all are acting like y'all really know Ms. James' catalog when you really only know "At Last". Sometimes stars don't get it right, just like all of us living our regular lives don't get it right. That doesn't make us bad people. Y'all are just using this post to talk sh*t about Beyonce. If it was another singer, this wouldn't have garnered this much attention. And let's be real, there may have been some jealousy on Ms. James' part at play too.
