Brings back fond memories from the 1960s when our science teacher mixed phosphorus and sodium and burned down the laboratory. The air hits the phosphorus and the fire starts. The teacher puts water on it and the sodium reacts. The fire gets out of control so the fire brigade adds more water, not their best idea with sodium & other chemicals in the laboratory. The fire brigade sends a car to pick up a chemist. A load of sand was prescribed but it was too late for the science lab. If only video cameras & youtube existed in the 1960s, the video would have gone viral.

In grade 9 science, our teacher pulled out a piece of potassium from a oil filled jar and told us that it’s stored in there so it doesn’t oxidize with the air and burst into fire, she said it was very soft and she then dropped it into a beaker of water, we saw it turn into purple flames, and she even lit a piece of magnesium, that was bright as hell. She also had some sodium. And omg flame tests were so mesmerizing.

I grew up in Chicago and when I was in about the 7th grade, I would go to a place on South Chicago Avenue called Zircon Scientific Corporation and buy small rolls of magnesium. I'd go find my friends hanging around at night at our school and would unroll a couple inches of it and slip it into the keyhole of the door and tell them that I was going to blow the door off the school. When I hear people having had boring chemistry class I'm glad my school at least got that part right: we had multiple sorts of explosions with multiple types of substances and the situations under which they can occur, up to the "hollywood style" explosion of a big fireball coming from a hydrogen filled ballon that the teacher held a candle on a stick next to (he explained they tend to use liquid fuels in Hollywood, but he wanted to show us what different gas explosions looked like, the next experiment was an exploding tea cannister filled with natural gas to show how gas explosions in homes happen, to teach anyone that if you smell gas somewhere: leave). Same thing with magnesium in water (if I recall it that was the thing the teacher did). We all got a tiny, tiny sliver that we were allowed to throw in a testtube with a bit of water to see the violent reaction, and the teacher then did the same thing with a bigger chunk, to show different types of metals and the way they decay and burn. The white flashing while the magnesium responded fiercely was pretty impressive, just like some substance (don't know which one anymore) that produced A LOT of purple smoke :P.

Granted, I get it… High school kids are “too cool” for school. And most teachers probably think they can get a little further with them, by doing cool explosions and other reactions to gain their attention and maybe spark some interest. But, it’s honestly just a huge disservice to them, when you realize that you signed up for chemistry in college… only to be completely let down, when you realize it’s not non-stop James Bond Hollywood movie antics, like, it was in high school. Chemistry is just so much cooler than simple chemical reactions, though. It just doesn’t do it justice by going down that path of raccoon style teaching (Hey, look over here! I remember when an episode of the tv show MASH showed casualties of phosphorus bombing. Soldiers were getting that material stuck in wounds and when doctors tried to remove it the patient experienced excruciating pain and skin burning. The doctors eventually hit on the procedure of operating on patients placed in tubs of water.

Was at a live fire exercise at night at Ft.Carson in Colorado once. Watched south of me white phosphorus bombs dropped by plane light up the dark. They sparkled like fireworks sparklers,huge column rising straight up in the night. I later was told they burn everything they touched to dust....everything. Those columns of diamond sparkling were both beautiful to behold,and completely terrifying at the same time....

spec ops the line aint shit mash showed its true nightmare in an episode then fury you get to see it in action again willy peat is the nick name for this stuff in the war. shit fairly sure we had white phosphorous grenades during the d day landing in Normandy also fairly sure they were shown in saving private Ryan. also willy peat is now a war crime thats ok we will just use napalm instead.

@@hardwirecars yep I think WP was deployed in WWII, but now it’s prohibited though I think there were some reports of it being used during the most recent Iraq war.

I remember in high school chemistry lighting off a box of magnesium strips and threw it under water in the sink to see what it would do. Burned a hole right through the stainless steel sink. Got kicked out of school for a couple days. That was in the 70's.

I lit a firecracker in my mom's house, she had just finished cleaning it from top to bottom and was out running errands afterward. Well, I decided to light the firework (bottle rocket) in the kitchen then I looked up, saw all of my mom's wall decor in her immaculately cleaned house, realized what I had done, spooked myself and dropped the firework in the nearest water source that I could find, which was a bucket of dirty mop water that my mom forgot to empty and put away. The firework exploded while underneath the water, the pressure of the explosion blew a hole in the bottom side of the mop bucket and there weree gallons of dirty water spewing all over the floor. Knowing the a$$whooing coming my way I decided to leave the house before anyone knew I was there. As I walk up to the front door, my mom was walking in. She saw the water, smelled the smoke and asked me "who did this?" To which I replied that age ole "Wasn't me." as I walked right pass her. She was frozen in disbelief. I ran to my aunt's house and hid out for a few hours. Thankful that I avoided the mother of all beatings. The kind that comes when you dirty the home of a woman right after she's cleaned it and right before she starts dinner.
