Great white sapote trees :) what spacing are they planted at?
@Figaholics

These are planted 7' x 7', closer than I wish, in hindsight. I have some others planted 16' between rows and 8' between trees and even that is closer than I'd like.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I went 15ft between trees and a little more between rows. Still planning on pruning.

Where in San Diego area can we find sapote available? We love sapote at home and only sprouts has some once a year, I have a fig tree, is my 4th tree and the mole rats keeps eating the root, and I don’t like to use poison in my garden, what do you recommend to apply to the fig tree to harvest big sweet fruit? Thank so much for your information and patience and for showing how to make an injerto how we called that in Spanish the insertion of 2 trees together, I finally know exactly how to do it, also I’m looking for yellow fig tree so I can have one purple fig but my favorite is the yellow type, where can I buy one?

Exotica nursery in Vista sells white sapote trees. There are a couple of small growers in the Fallbrook area that sell fruit. I suggest you trap for your rats, banana seems to work well for a bait. Dispose of as you wish. I suggest a general fruit tree fertilizer should work fine in the absence of having soil testing done. I generally focus on nitrogen early in the season and potassium once fruits are developing. We sell cuttings around January at www.figaholics.com, including many yellow varieties. If you wish to purchase a tree already started for you, check out figBid.com where there are many offerings most of the year.

I have a wooly leaf white sapote, casimoria tetrameria I believe is the Latin name How many years should it take to fruit, I'm in zone 9B? Also how often do you water? I have mine by a sprinkler but am thinking of capping it because I think I was over watering this tree.
@Figaholics
@Figaholics 2 жыл бұрын
I would guess that it should fruit in 4-5 years after germination. My white sapote get watered at least once a week and I see no problems when I occasionally water heavily.

How would you rate the Mcdill variety? Thanks!
@Figaholics
@Figaholics 2 ай бұрын
I consider it good and worth growing because of large size. Some people say it's not very good but I think it's under-rated. Maybe climate dependent.

Thankyou for taking the time out to make the video. I live in Perth, Western Australia and have only seen a couple of varieties here in the shops. I believe one was called a "Maybelle" which I had never heard of before. Other varieties are more often found on the northern east coast of Australia. They are Kampong, Ortega, Pike, Hawaiian Supreme, Lemon Gold, Macs Golden, Reinecke, Matasano, Golden globe and Blumenthal White Sapote. They are a fruit tree that is in demand. Very hard to find in the nurseries here, is better to know someone already growing them. Would love to be able to purchase some of the varieties you have there.

If you are able to obtain an import permit, we can discuss those requirements at a later day. However, my focus is trying to make these more available in the U.S.

@@Figaholics It will take me some time to look into the costs, the government here has recently made some changes to the import restrictions so will check on their system called BICON (Australian Biosecurity Import Conditions).

Johnny Rocket I know a guy here in Vic that sells them on a small scale. I have purchased Wilson, Vernon and Chris, but he also has Suebelle, Ortago, Lemon Gold and many others. I like how well Wilson and Vernon grow really well here, Chris has very slow growth here. Wilson has awesome taste. I was told Vernon was a good pollinator for most varieties

Which is more cold tolerant and stands freezing temperatures....avocado or white sapote? I bought one but my climate is 8b. Everyy winter the daily temperatures are between 12°C/2°C and in January the lowest temperatures is -6°C but one day or two. I don't know... if I cover it until 5- 6 years... I live in central Spain.
@Figaholics
@Figaholics 4 жыл бұрын
There are some cold tolerant varieties of avocado but pretty much all white sapote can handle below 0C for several hours without damage. I've had just mild damage at 24F.

@@Figaholics All freezes starts in January....one week we can reach 12/0 or 12/-1°C so it's usual -5°C but one day a month....so I asked you about put it in the ground or keep it in a pot
@Figaholics
@Figaholics 4 жыл бұрын
As I wrote above, my trees have encountered 24F (about -5c) with just mild damage. Mine are planted in the ground. I would probably keep them in a pot until they are two years old or trunk has diameter of 1 inch (25mm). We have had many days this winter already down to 0c to 2c with no damage at all. In general, I think they seem to be about as cold tolerant as lemons.

Have you ever had to store white sapote scion wood for some time? If yes, how did you do it?

Maybe a month or two, just kept in a Ziploc bag with a slightly damp paper towel, bit I usually try to graft right away.

@@Figaholics OK, that's good to hear. I've been told by a grower last year not to keep them in the fridge because that's "too cold for them", so I kept them in a cabinet for 40 days. And when it was time to graft they were smelling of mold, once I cut through the parafilm that they were wrapped in. Only one graft graft took out of 6, and they are supposed to be super easy to graft.
