Surprisingly, the White Swiss Shepherd was originally bred in Germany. Its progenitors were German Shepherds of a rare species that were white in color. It was first seen at the Hanoverian dog show in 1822. It was a white male named Greif.
The offspring of Greif is long involved in the breeding of this breed in Germany until the 30s of the 20th century. The aim of the breeders was to breed a working dog with ideal qualities and characteristics.
After the rise of the Nazis to power "white shepherds" fell into disfavor and were culled. Breeding work continued in the USA and Canada. The breed was registered in these countries in the 60s of the 20th century, and it was called the "American-Canadian White Sheepdog. In the 70s, these dogs were first introduced to Switzerland, which continued breeding. It worked to improve the characteristics of the species, both externally and psycho-emotionally, as well as intellectually.
The breed was registered in the Swiss Breed Book in 1991 and was recognized by the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 2003, at which time it became known as the White Swiss Shepherd.
The White Swiss Shepherd is a medium-sized dog with well-developed musculature. It looks harmonious and graceful. Its distinctive feature is its long white coat.
This is a kind, gentle, cheerful dog. It is very devoted to its owner. Her character is calm and peaceful, but at the same time, she is very watchful and alert. This dog is very intelligent and trainable.
This breed was originally bred for service and guarding purposes, due to the rapid development of cities and the resulting increase in crime. It is used for similar purposes in the present day. It can also be used as a guide or rescue dog. It has the right qualities for police service. And undoubtedly, the white Swiss shepherd dog is a great companion, especially for those who like an active lifestyle.

genetically there are few differences between Swiss Shepherds and GSDs, but the AKC does not classify a white coat as an acceptable coat color, and their temperaments are different. GSDs are much more territorial and Swiss shepherds rarely show any signs of aggression. Swiss also don't have the iconic sloping back. Basically they are cousins. @@claire98

I'm planning to get a WGSD. I'm looking for some help understanding how to choose one. Some Veteran said that American GSD will get hip and elbow dysplasia over age and pure bred GSD will not get the dysplasia over time. What do you say about this when it comes to WGSD ? Is there a way we can understand the chances of dysplasia for a new born puppy ? I found a back yard breeder who has couple of white puppies from the regular black and brown GSDs (Mom and Dad). I'm confused how two regular colored dogs get a white puppy. Any theory on this ? Can I go for it ? or should I go for a registered breeder for pure bred ? What makes the difference ? I sincerely appreciate any suggestions and clarifications. Thanks.

If both parents have recessive white genes then they can throw a white puppy or two in the litter.

best to steer clear of back yard breeders, often they don't have health clearances and have unethical practices. Also if they're claiming white came from brown/black they're not being truthful. White are basically a distinct breed descended from GSD.

100% go for a registered breeder. They can and should only breed dogs with negative or slightly positive medical tests.
